Question: Look back on your student journey. Recall an instance in which a teacher facilitated a teachable moment/experience for you. How did it impact you?

I was a chronically sleepy student in secondary school. My teacher pulled me aside. After ascertaining that I was alright/asking me if I was feeling unwell, she told me that my sleeping in class was disrespectful to her and to everyone else in class. She also gave me practical tips to stay awake and offered me a special allowance (standing up in class whenever I felt sleepy).

I was put in charge of a planning committee and was cracking down under pressure. And a teacher just journeyed through the whole thing with me. Not really a single moment, but the fact that he did it consistently for months speaks volumes to me

After managing to get into a prestigious writing programme, my secondary school form teacher asked me whether I would invite her to the opening ceremony. When I asked, she politely declined. This incident taught me how teachers are humans too, who want appreciation and courtesy extended to them, and it taught me also how to always think of the people around me no matter their age or position.

I can’t recall any incident that required a teachable moment (generally well behaved and low maintenance student). But I did remember my form teacher and el/lit teacher affirming my strength in languages and humanities even though I struggled with math and science. So I guess by focusing on my strength I found joy in learning?

Most recent classroom experience (not as a student though) was when the econs dept invited students to give feedback on lessons over the past year. One student wrote "change the teacher". My mentor used it as a teachable moment to tell students that words can make or break a person. Msg was to be sensitive towards the person receiving feedback and aim for constructive feedback.

It was after a test, and I had passed but didn’t do very well, and I was visibly upset, but my friends all didn’t understand why I was upset and so they told my form teacher about it, who then gave me a talk. At that time, I was fresh out of primary school (which was quite a rat race) and my form teacher sat me down and gave me a very enlightening talk about what the meaning of life was and what “ the joy of learning” was meant to be :’)

This incident really started to get me to question myself and my beliefs, and to seek self improvement.

The teacher took the boys into another room and told us about the implications of the sign, and how it was offensive and disrespectful.
