When I asked, she politely declined. But I did remember my form teacher and el/lit teacher affirming my strength in languages and humanities even though I struggled with math and science. One student wrote "change the teacher". My mentor used it as a teachable moment to tell students that words can make or break a person. So everyone laughed at him. But later the teacher told us that he was having a stomachache and that our act of laughing at him was unkind. She used the incident to teach us the value of empathy, care and concern. She asked what I wanted out of it, and whether I was happy with myself as I was or whether I wanted to aim for bigger things. The teacher took the boys into another room and told us about the implications of the sign, and how it was offensive and disrespectful.
