Growing up, I would always hear my friends say “I love you” to their parents before they hung up on the phone or left their house. Every time I heard it, it would make me feel guilty because I never say “I love you” to my parents. In fact, to this day, those words have never left my mouth unless I was telling my friend or significant other, nor have I ever heard it from my parents. However, I know my parents love me, but how do I know if they’ve never said so explicitly?

For this project, I plan to highlight the difference and effects of love languages between traditional Chinese families and western families through storytelling and a series of interviews. In my family, “I love you” is shown through the little things: parents asking if we’ve eaten yet, bringing us fruit when we’ve studying, and even scolding us about our grades. However, these little signs are difficult to pick up on when you’re young, thus such behaviour often raises internal conflict in the children of traditional Chinese families. These conflicts may range from the child struggling to connect with their parents to wondering if their parents care about them. As many of us grow up, we learn to read between the lines of our parents’ gestures and understand their intentions, but for some of us, these conflicts are still ingrained in our heads.

I hope to use my project as an outlet to show how the traditional Chinese love language may affect the daily life of someone raised in that family dynamic and how it differs from those raised in a westernized family. To do so, I intend to interview four of my friends: two of which come from a western background and two of which come from a traditional Chinese background, as well as giving the audience insight on my own family dynamic. Some questions I plan to base my interviews around are:
What type of family background do you consider yourself to have? Traditional Chinese or western?
Do you think your parents love you? How do they show it?
How do you show your love to someone? Do you think your parents’ love language has an influence on your love language?
Did you ever second guess how your parents feel towards you when you were younger? How has that affected you now?
Do you think your relationship with your parents benefited or suffered a hindrance due to their love language?

In terms of tools, I would use my phone to capture the video and audio of the interview. Since I plan to do a multimedia essay, I don’t need editing software, but will be using Adobe Spark as a platform for my essay.

For my project, I want to focus on the similarities and differences between different Asian cultures, and how they differ from what I experience, as a Chinese heritage student. I want to focus on the differences in family dynamics between different Asian cultures, as well as where each of my friends come from, and the differences they perceive between their Asian culture and Canadian culture. The main idea I want to uncover in this film is how even though in Canada, Asians are all lumped into one category, there are many cultural differences and varieties in each Asian nationalities; I also want to showcase how even though we have many differences, there are also a lot of similarities shared between our cultures and family life, so I will touch on personal habits and interests as well.

For the content, I will be interviewing two of my friends, Kyle who is from the Philippines, and Diane, who is a Canadian born Korean. I will be asking my friends questions about their family structure, what their parents do for work, and see if they are in close contact with their relatives. I also want to explore what they think of their heritage by asking about holidays they celebrate, where their parent’s hometown is, and if they identify as being Canadian or being from their parent’s home country. I believe these questions will show how although we all identify as Canadian, we still have ties to our respective Asian countries and have different habits and traditions. Besides the questions on family life and heritage, I also want to compare all our experiences during quarantine, and how similar our habits and schedules have been. Aside from that, I also wanna touch on everyone’s different hobbies and interests, to find a point of similarities between all of us. After each question, I will be adding on my Chinese perspective and focusing on how what they experience differs from what I experience.

COVID-19 brings a lot of inconveniences, so I will be avoiding meeting up with my friends to interview them. I will be scheduling Zoom calls with them and asking them questions through there, then recording their answers and downloading them on my laptop. When editing my video, I will be using iMovie to put everything together, as well as using it to add captions. When recording my own personal dialogue, I will be using my phone.

Intro:

For my final project, I am thinking of creating a video that shows my family members, talk about their background, habits, hobbies, and interests. I will be using my phone as the primary recording equipment and the editing software I will try using will be Kinemaster or iMovie but it is not for certain as I have never tried to edit a full video before. Although I am excited to try this since I want to do this project as a video, it will be meaningful as it can be a precious memory later on in my life when I look back on it.

Part 1:

I will give a short introduction as to who I am and what this video is for. The family members who I wish to include in my video will be my father, mother, three younger sisters, Olivia, Emma, and Kaycie as well as my grandparents. My grandparents do not want to be in front of the camera for a long period so unfortunately, I can only include them at the beginning of the video. However, they will all get a brief screen time while I introduce who they are. I will include things such as their name, age, and who they are to me.

Part 2:

Then I will proceed to talk about my parent’s background and hometown as well as why I need to know. During this part, I will try to find pictures of their hometown and show it while I talk about their background and hometown. Then I will proceed to do a short interview and ask them why they decided to move to a new country and the difference between their hometown and my hometown. After finishing my parent’s background I will go through my three younger sisters' backgrounds and show pictures of when we were younger.

Part 3:

Then I will proceed to talk about the habits and lifestyle of my parents, three younger sisters, and me. Including how our habits and lifestyle have changed from before and how the languages we speak at home changed throughout the years.

Part 4:

Next, I will be interviewing what my family’s hobbies and interests are and if there are any similarities between us. The interviews will be done first with my father then proceed with my mother, Olivia, Emma, Kaycie, and then myself. I hope to show each of their hobbies and interest in action and also ask how it has changed throughout the years or if it has changed since covid 19 happened.

Ending:

After interviewing them all the video will come to an end where I hope to get a short clip of my entire family saying bye and thank you for watching.

When I was younger, I noticed that my parents were different when I compared them to my friends’ parents. I noticed that my parents were more “free” and willing to let me do anything, whilst my friends’ parents would be seen as very strict, controlling, and have a very different method of caring. As I grew older, I noticed that there existed this type of stereotype where asian families are very strict, traditional-thinking, and act in a form of “tiger parenting” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_parenting). An example of this parenting stereotype include the way asian parents push and pressure their children to attain high levels of academic achievement or success in extracurricular activities such as music, sports, and etc, using authoritarian parenting methods. However, I was unable to relate to this stereotype as I found myself observing that my parents were neither strict nor controlling. Thus, for my project, I want to dive deeper into this stereotype and find out why so many asian parents follow this form of tiger parenting and why my parents did not adhere to the same ideologies.

For the central theme, I will attempt to show the differences between traditional-thinking asian families and more “open-minded” asian families. The differences very much relate to my life as it is something I experienced and still experience with to this day. I will mostly be presenting this experience through interviews where I will interview my parents and friends. Through the interviews, I will cover the topics of why certain things were done and why they think it was the best approach. For example, I will ask questions like:

To Parents

“Why did you not ask about my academics like most traditional asian families do?”

“What made you guys strive away from tiger parenting?”

“Were your parents (my grandparents) more like traditional-thinking asian families or more open-minded like you guys?”

To Friends

“Do you think your parents are considered ‘tiger parents’?”

“Why do you think your parents are considered ‘tiger parents’?”

“Do you think tiger parenting is an effective parenting technique?”

Conflict: “Have you ever wanted your parents to not be so strict?”

Through the conflict question above, I want to show the reflection of my friends’ and how they personally experienced tiger parenting. I want to show the struggles that they may have had growing up due to this authoritarian influence. The reason is, although asian parents can be seen as strict, I believe that there are well explained reasons and that they only enforce these rules because of a deeper meaning. Therefore, by interviewing my friends, I may be able to find out these deeper meanings and show that there was an ulterior meaning to tiger-parenting.

Cast: Joshua Chew (has a traditional-style asian background), Andrew Wong (has a more open-minded asian background), My Parents.

Tools: Camera, Adobe Premiere Pro (video editing)

The central idea of my project will be Cantonese vs Mandarin. This is important to me because over the course of learning Mandarin, I have noticed there have been many differences when it comes to word choice and grammar. I remember back in elementary school, one of the parents of my classmate would always speak Mandarin, it seemed like an entirely different language. I think by focusing on these differences, I can help myself and other Cantonese speakers speak Mandarin more clearly. I plan on presenting this in the format of an educational Youtuber such as J.J McCullough.

For content I will be reviewing how I will have example sentences in Cantonese followed by the same sentence in Mandarin. There will also be some asides where individual words are explained. Vocabulary differences will be explained such as, 旅馆 vs 酒店. Some words can be exchanged one to one such as 係 and 是, 唔 vs 不. Other words have different usage such as 跟 vs 同 vs 和 where these words cannot be exchanged one to one. There is also a major difference in question words, for example 乜 and 咩 vs 什么 where there are two words in Cantonese for one word in Mandarin.

This is mainly focused on colloquial 白话 and not formal written Cantonese, this is because I don’t believe Cantonese heritage speakers learn formal forms, otherwise Mandarin would be much easier for us since the written form is really similar to Mandarin. The myriad of differences will hopefully display the struggles of learning Mandarin from the Cantonese heritage perspective. This is the conflict, how can we survive in the Mandarin world when everything is dissimilar? Are we even the same people? This is a question I have pondered many times in my head. At this point, I will point out that even though the language is different there are many similarities not just between the languages, but also in the culture. In fact, it is the same culture. Cantonese and Mandrin people can be considered one in the same. This is my opinion that I will express in the video.

I may use my Grandmother, and Mother in the video, however I think I will just use them as reference to make sure that I get my Cantonese and Mandarin right.

To make this video I plan on using my camera, a tripod, and an editing software such as davinci resolve. I hope I am skilled enough to insert visuals and of course sample sentences so people can see the obscure cantonese spoken words.

I am planning on making a short video for my final project. Though I am not living with my family at the moment, I would like to try and interview them when I get the chance. I’m planning the overarching theme of my video to be about Chinese/Asian Americans feeling like their culture is “in the middle;” not Chinese enough, yet not Western a lot. This topic is important to me, as I’ve always felt slightly out of place around my Western friends, yet culturally distant from my extended family.

Further, I would like to my parents how they believed their parenting compares to western and traditional Chinese parenting, and if they had any struggles trying to raise me and my brother in a foreign society. My parents never complained a lot. They work extremely hard and dedicate everything they do to their children, as do most Chinese-American parents. Therefore, I've always thought about my own struggles being raised in a Chinese household in Canada, but I've never considered that my first-generation Canadian parents may have conflicts raising their child in a foreign country.

1.	Introduction:
-	Filming life at home, trying to capture a mix of the Chinese culture and the western culture in my household
-	Include self introduction, describing the meaning of my Chinese name, while also explaining that I was born & raised in Canada.

2.	Interview with parents
-	Introduce them and ask them when/why they moved to Canada
-	Ask if they noticed a big cultural change when they moved here
-	Ask if they ever felt conflicted raising me in a traditional Chinese way, and if they feel like they adopted some Western means of upbringing.
-	Ask what they hope for their children in terms of being in touch with our Chinese culture

3.	Interview with another 1st generation Asian-Canadian(?) (my best friend)
-	Introduce Victoria and ask when/why she moved to Canada
-	Ask how the cultural differences impact her daily life here, including making friends, communicating with others, beliefs/values, etc.
-	Ask how she feels about her culture when she first moved here vs. now

4.	Interview with another 2nd generation Chinese-Canadian(?) (brother)
-	Introduce him
-	Ask if he has ever felt embarrassed about our Chinese background
-	Ask about his current relationship with our culture and his wishes for the future

After each interview/throughout the video, I’d like to summarize or discuss the participants’ answers & my thoughts on them. By the end of the video, I’d like to have gained an appreciation for first generation immigrants, especially my parents. I want to give my parents a chance to express their hardships and share their stories of feeling “in the middle.”
Cast: I will ask my family (consisting of my mother, father, brother), and my best friend/roommate to participate in this video.
Tools: I have the necessary equipment for filming (DSLR, Tripod), and am able to find an editing software to finalize my video.

Central Theme:

I want to focus my final project around the cultural differences that are apparent between children and their immigrant parents. This topic is directly related to my life as both my parents are immigrants from China. I will present this concept through a video essay/ short film where I will create a timeline of my parents’ and I’s lives and then conduct interviews with both my parents and my brother. I will then end the essay off with a reflection portion where I compare their interview responses and make conclusions on the differences between my parents' more traditional lifestyle versus my brother and I’s more westernized lifestyle.

Conflict:

This idea first came to mind because I realized that in my life my parents and I have not always seen eye to eye and at times this would lead to arguments or even fights. When I was younger I thought this was due to the generational gap between my parents and I, but as I’ve grown up I realized that a lot of my parents’ values and habits are rooted in their culture and upbringing. A large reason for some of our disagreements were not because of our generational gap but actually due to differences in values because of our different cultural upbringings.

Resolution

By interviewing my parents about their upbringings, I can better understand where their values come from as well as their thought process. This will give me more clarity about why I may disagree with my parents at times and maybe even allow for us to find a middle ground/ compromise on certain topics.

Outline
I will start by giving a brief timeline, explaining where my parents were born, where they grew up, when/why they immigrated, when and where my brother and I were born, and where my brother and I grew up. I will create this timeline by using pictures as well as a voiceover with subtitles. I will then go more into depth and interview my parents about the topics above.

Below are the interview questions I prepared for each topic:

Where my parents were born and where they grew up

What was your family dynamic like when you grew up?

Were your parents strict?

Was there a lot of academic pressure?

Habits

What did a typical day look like?

What were your spending habits like?

Hobbies

What did you like to do for fun?

What were your interests?

Immigrating to Canada

Why did you choose to immigrate to Canada? What other countries were you considering and why did you end up choosing Canada?

What was the immigration process like?

What immediate differences in culture did you experience when you guys immigrated?

Birth of my brother and I

What parenting differences did you notice between Canadian and Chinese culture?

Things you agreed/ disagreed with from the practices of each culture?

Differences between how you chose to raise my brother and I versus how you guys were raised

Raising my brother and I

What were the biggest challenges you guys faced with knowing limited English?

Sending us back to China (my brother and I lived in China for 2 years with our grandparents)

Why did you decide to send us back to China?

What were your main concerns about sending us back?

Would you prefer to have raised us in Canada or China if you had the choice?

Growing up

Language barriers growing up

Was it difficult to watch us learn and assimilate to Canadian culture?

Did you worry that we would be more Canadian and lose touch with our roots?

How did you try to keep us in touch with your culture?

After the interview portion I will follow it up with a reflection portion where I talk about my parents' responses with my brother and discuss how our views differ. I will then end it off with an individual narration portion where I reflect and draw conclusions.

The cast will be my brother, father, mother and I. I will be creating the short film with clips I film on my phone as well as old photos. I will put everything together on iMovie and add subtitles, narration and pictures.

1) Growing up, I always thought that my parents were more harsh compared to my friends’ parents, whether they were Chinese or not. In my project, I would like to showcase the differences and or similarities between Chinese and Western parenting methods and how it affects them later on. A term called “tiger parenting” is commonly used to describe rigorous parents who also uphold traditional values very seriously. A typical example could be parents pressuring their children to achieve high academic standards and succeed in multiple extra-curricular activities. This topic is important to me because my childhood has made a tremendous impact on me and has made me who I am today. I will present this concept through a short film that will include an interview with my mom and girlfriend (separately). But to begin the video, I will briefly introduce my main topic and why it is important to me. Afterwards, I will have an interview with my girlfriend, asking her basic questions about herself, such as “where were you born and raised?” and “what type of a family did you grow up in?”. Then, we will use flashbacks to showcase our differences and similarities in each topic. The examples of each topic will be acted out by myself, with my mom and girlfriend’s help. After going through each case, I will interview my mom, asking her why she had raised me the way she had and her values/beliefs as a Chinese mother. I will ask questions such as “how did grandma and grandpa influence you on how to raise a child?” and “if you had the chance, would you change the way you had raised me?”. At the end of the video, I would like to summarize the discussion results and reflect on it. I hope to use this project to help others understand how different parenting styles can drastically affect who we are, how we behave, and what we think and believe.

2) Topics

Extra-curricular activities

Manners

Tidiness

Freedom

3) Cast

Myself

My mom

My girlfriend

4) Tools

Recording equipment: iPhone 11

Editing software: iMovie

The Chinese tradition of family is one that we are all familiar with. Staying to live at home with your grandparents, parents, and siblings and waiting to move out until you are ready for marriage is common in many Chinese families. This is to foster a sense of community and what it means to be a family. Oftentimes children are expected to help around the house, and if you live with your grandparents, to help look after them. This is because in a Chinese family, community, responsibility, and togetherness are values that this culture idealizes, and has been understood for many generations. However, with the arrival of the 21st century, technology, communication, and global economies has changed the way people live. Just like data in undersea communication cables travelling from Los Angeles to Denmark, Tokyo to Madrid, and all the other different destination network hubs all across the world, people and families do the same, and with them so do their cultures. Vancouver can be seen as one of these network hubs, a melting pot of cultures, ethnicities, and heritages. People from all over the world immigrate to Canada and The United States to live a better life and create something for their children. However, immigration also involves being among people of the majority culture and, unfortunately more often than not, that means descrimination by others for being different. In order for an immigrant to belong, they must assimilate into their culture even if it means giving up their own. This project serves to examine one aspect of Chinese culture that is different from the West, in particular, the values and ideals that we traditionally adhere to about work and life. The idea that we become doctors based on our parents wishes or marry due to business or political reasons are examples of following the traditional ideology where the children voluntarily give up their dreams of being a painter to pursue a path dictated for them by their parents in order to serve the betterment of the family and next of kin. Contrastingly, Western ideologies such as “The American Dream” are heavily influenced by the prevalence of democracy, freedom, and capitalism, where children grow up making decisions that they believe will give them the most happiness, typically without regard for their family or next of kin. This project does not serve to prove one ideology is better than the other, rather the purpose is to illustrate the presence of cultural assimilation of beliefs in different second generation Chinese in Canada.

The cast will include my friend Melody, and possibly (as this is not confirmed, permission is still required) Henry, and Kevin. Cantonese may be spoken..

To create this project I will be using my phone, an appropriate tripod if necessary, and editing software such as Windows Movie Maker, but this is not yet confirmed. Regardless of skill, time is the only thing I need to make my masterpiece come to life.

When I was a child, my parents were stereotypical “tiger parents,” highly controlling and authoritarian. They prohibited me from engaging in many aspects of western culture to put me in a position to succeed academically. Consequently, sleepovers, play dates, and video games were replaced with math problems and piano practice. However, as time went on I noticed a shift in my parent's views and ideologies. My younger siblings, who are 7 years younger than me, were raised very differently; they were allowed significantly more freedom, similar to the lenient and forgiving western parenting style.

For my project, I want to explore how my family has assimilated to western culture in the past couple of decades due to living in Canada. I plan to accomplish this by creating a draw my life type of voice-over video with old photos and drawings that will describe my family when I was younger compared to present day. For the dialogue, I will be building off of my lesson essays and revising them because they already cover many of the talking points that I wanted to discuss. I will be mainly focusing on how my family's habits, interests, ideologies, and general family behaviors (Languages and food). My video will be split into four different parts.

Part1: Parents Background

I will introduce some background information about my parents when they were growing up in China. Here is where I would have photos of my parents when they were younger.

I will interview my parents about: (I will be reading out their answers because they don’t want to be on camera.)

Where they were born/grew up

How they were raised by their parents? (Were they strict?)

What their day to day life was like as kids? (Was it studying all day? Was there time to play?)

What were their hobbies and interests?

What they worked as in China/What their dream job is?

Why did they immigrate to Canada?

Part 2: My childhood

Here I will give a deeper self-introduction. (Meaning of name, age/date of birth, where I was born, where I grew up, etc...)

Talk about my childhood. (How I was raised. What it was like to grow up in an Asian family in Canada. What were the differences between my family and my friends/classmates' families? My hobbies and interests. Languages spoken at home. etc…)

Part 3: Siblings

Here I will introduce my siblings.

I want my central theme to be about learning different Asian cultures and gender in parenting practices. As I was growing up, I have not always been close to my parents. They’ve always gone to work at 10 am and go back home during my bedtime when I was younger. I’ve seen some people who have a very close relationship with their parents and I do sometimes wish that I have a very close and great relationship with my own parents. Showing physical or verbal affection has always been awkward with them especially with my dad. Even though they do not seem affectionate, they were strict with my studies and they also have high expectations on what I become in the future like career-wise. They were also very strict in terms of whom I am dating but not strict at all when it comes to my brother dating which does not make a lot of sense to me. Because they are very strict with me, I do not tell them about my problems and a lot of things in my life. They could find fault in a lot of things that I do/say that I refuse to deal with the unnecessary stress by just avoiding telling them things. In the video, I would like to interview people with different asian cultural backgrounds about their parents’ parenting practices. I plan to just interview my boyfriend who is Canadian born vietnamese and my friend who was born and raised in Taiwan. The editing software I will be using is Adobe Premiere and the tool I will be using is a video camera.

This would be my script or screenplay outline:

1. Affection

1.1. Does your parents show you physical and/or emotional affection?

1.2. How does your parents show you affection?

1.3. How often do you think your parents show you affection?

1.4. Do you and your parents say 'I love you' to each other?

2. Education

2.1. Were/Are your parents strict with you regarding your studies?

2.2 How do your parents handle different grades?

2.3. How often do you tell them your grades?

3. Future Careers

3.1. How much do they significantly impact your future career?

3.2. Are you willing to follow what they want you want to do?

4. Communication

4.1. Do you tell each other everything, mostly everything or little to not at all?

4.2. Do you tell them your problems in life? How much do you tell them?

4.3. Do you tell your parents who you are dating? Why or why not?

Mind map:

I may or may not use my microphone to do a voiceover for parts where I am not being recorded. This will be a video documentary type of project. I will try to gather personal photos, stock footage and pictures online, and film some shots of me speaking. I will try and include some humour as well.

For my final project, I want to talk about my cultural background and how it has influenced me. I will talk about things like my 2 names, when and where I was born/grew up, what language I speak, my hobbies, what I want to be in the future, etc. I also will talk about my family. This includes their names, where they are from, their hometowns, their professions, etc. I will try to relate these two together to explain how I have been influenced by my family’s background.

I will also talk about some differences between Canadian (or Western) and Chinese culture. These can include things like the food we eat, our habits and hobbies, mannerisms like wearing shoes indoors, or greeting strangers, our opinions/beliefs, and the role of family in our lives. There is also the difference between how children are raised and what values are passed on to them and the effects they have. I will talk about how my family, and I follow some of these cultural practices and some differences between my family, and I.

From this contrast between cultures, I will talk about how this has affected me. I will talk about the places where they conflict and cause confusion in my life, like my beliefs, identity, and how these have changed throughout my life. I will also talk about what being Chinese diaspora is like i.e. being separated from relatives, language barrier, western and chinese influences in beliefs, how I was put into an ESL program even though I was fluent in English and more.

Then there will be a part about my general thoughts about everything that was discussed, how it has affected my thinking and attitude towards my identity, what I’ve learned from the experience. This includes things like how I have learned to live with these differences and how I am trying to develop a better sense of my identity. I will also talk about the unique perspective I have due to being Chinese diaspora like how I view language, and culture.

"The Halfway Point"
Having been a child of immigrant parents, I grew up hearing terms like “white-washed” and “fob” all the time. These were labels that I never understood because they forced me to strictly be defined as one thing or the other based on my looks and personality. I struggled to understand my own culture but on the other hand, I also struggled to understand the customs of my peers who were submersed in western culture. For my final project, I will be making a video that introduces you to my life and my upbringing, as well as describes what I have learned growing up as a Chinese Canadian.

As a child, I rarely thought about race and culture as something that differentiates people from one another, but as I grew up, I began to desperately cling to my Chinese heritage. There were little subtle hints when I was younger that pointed out how different I was from western kids. I predominately spoke a language that wasn’t English when I was at home, the lunches I brought to school were not sandwiches or lunchables, but the biggest difference between me and the other kids was my name. My name was always the biggest question mark in my life, and it wasn’t until my later years in high school that I discovered what it had meant. One of the topics I will be covering in my final project is the meaning behind my name, and how my name has influenced my life in the past, the present, and the future.

My family members have always been the most important people in my life. My values and beliefs have been shaped by my parents, my grandparents, and my older sister, Megan. Despite my love for them, we haven’t always seen eye to eye. My parents being traditional Chinese immigrants, they believe that stability and success can bring you happiness, and although I don’t entirely disagree, I believe that stability and success brings safety, while happiness comes from passion and ambition. Due to the fact that my sister and I were born and raised in a western country, our hopes for our futures differ from those of our parents. For my project, I will be bringing in my older sister, my father, and my mother to discuss the differences between what it was like for my parents, who were born in China, versus what it was like for my sister and I, who were born in Canada.

As a final breakdown of my final project:

I will be discussing the differences between Western and Eastern ideologies as well as describe what my upbringing as a Chinese born Canadian was like.

This includes:

Meaning and importance of my name

Growing up in a traditional Chinese family

What I’ve learnt about being a Chinese Canadian

I will be bringing my family into my project:

Megan Liao

Older sister

Lixin (Jason) Liao

Father

Jing Liu

Mother

Tools for filming and editing have yet to be decided

For my project proposal, I want to illustrate the differences in affection between Chinese households and western households through my own life experiences and interviews with other families of different backgrounds.

I’ve noticed in Chinese households, parents hardly mention their love to someone they care about. Most parents will prefer to show their love by action rather than by directly confessing their affection. The reticent father will try hard to tackle any problem of other family members and the careful mother will get up early to prepare breakfast and clothes for their children. Although they seldom say “I love you”, the love that they have towards their children is expressed through their daily non-verbal actions. One of the reasons for not frequently manifesting their love verbally is that they expect their children to understand. They don’t need to say that because they believe that their children can feel the love from their actions and the sacrifices they have made. In addition, they may not be raised to show their emotions. Expressing love may be embarrassing. Chinese parents respond that they are not good at expressing positive emotions, and they are used to teaching as a way of showing their love. However, this can cause inner conflict in children raised in these traditional Chinese families. This may make a child question if their parents care about them or not, even though once these children grow up, they may eventually figure out that hardly saying love is not equal to a lack of love but most likely due to cultural differences.

This is important to me because although I know that they care about me, sometimes I find this hard to believe because my parents never verbalise it. Growing up, this made it very hard for me to get along with my parents because I always doubted whether or not they ever cared. This is also an important topic for me since in therapy, my therapist has mentioned how understanding my parents may help me build a better relationship with them as well as connect with them more. I hope to use this project to show how affection in someone who grew up in a Chinese household may affect their daily life and how this differs in western households. To execute this, I plan to interview my own family as well as four of my friends; two of which are also Chinese and two others who are from a western culture. I plan to ask them questions about their own family dynamic and compare the results.

Some of the main questions I plan to ask my friends are: does your family say “I love you” to each other often? How does your family express their love? Do you ever doubt that they care about you? How do you express your love to your parents? Does this differ from how you express your affection towards your friends? Has the way that they expressed their affection to you affected you? Has this affected the way you show affection towards others?

Some of the main questions I plan to ask my family are: How did their parents show their affection towards them? Is it different from how they express their affection towards their children? How has the way that their parents showed affection affected the way they grew up/affected the way they treat their own children? If they could go back in time, would they want to express their affection differently/be more verbal?

For tools, because I’m doing a multimedia essay, I will not require any editing software. However, I will most likely use my phone to record any audios of the interviews I do.

I was born in a city in China named 湛江, and lived there for four years before moving to Canada. Since then, I’ve only visited my hometown three times, and each time lasted no longer than three weeks; so it’s no wonder that I would feel disconnected from my cultural background. My mom, in an attempt to preserve my Chinese roots, sent me to Chinese school, but that only alienated me more because I hated it. Slowly, I grew to dislike my own culture, to the point of refusing to listen to Chinese music and opting for Western music instead. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon Chinese web novels that were translated to English that I slowly started to gain in interest in my own culture. Now, most of the music I listen to, the shows I watch, and the books I read are Chinese ones, but the disconnect still exists despite my attempts in regaining my culture back. My few years of chasing my culture could not compare to the decade during which I avoided my culture like a plague. This is why I decided to take CHIN141, to strengthen my cultural being. Another consequence of my avoiding of my culture is the disconnect between my close family members and I. Often times, my views and beliefs contradict my family members’; e.g. I believe that women can marry whomever they want and whenever they want while my older family members believe that women need to marry before the age of 30 to a man with a stable job, a house, and a car. This is the topic for my project: to compare and contrast the beliefs, interests, and habits of I, a somewhat white-washed Chinese Canadian, and my family members, who all were born and raised in China. I will carry out my project in a draw my life” video format with inserted clips of real-life interviews, pictures, and animations.

Outline:
1.0 Introduction
1.1 My background and personal information (e.g. name, where I was born, age, school, etc).
1.2 My family (e.g. names, relationship, where they were born, etc)
2.0 interests and hobbies
2.1 my interests and hobbies (social media, ice-skating, music, movies/dramas, celebrities)
2.2 my family members’ interests and hobbies (Douyin, WeChat, music, movies/dramas, celebrities)
3.0 Habits and lifestyle
3.1 “western” festivals and holidays (Christmas, Halloween, April Fool’s Day, Children’s day)
3.2 Chinese festivals and holidays (spring festival, Chinese New Years, Ghost month (August), Mid-autumn moon festival)
3.3 lifestyle at home (no dishwasher, oven used as storage for pots and pans, use of New Year calendar, Mahayana Buddhist praying corner, no baths, slippers, etc)
4.0 Difference and Similarities in Values and Beliefs
4.1 Education
4.2 Jobs
4.3 Marriage
5.0 conclusion

Conflict: the conflicting beliefs between my family and I, and how those beliefs have caused arguments to break out.

Resolution: At the same time, those beliefs also help us understand one another better because it is through those arguments that we can learn what the other truly thinks.

Cast: my mother, aunt, maternal grandmother, siblings, and maternal grandfather (I did not include my father because he can only speak in 开平话; I’m afraid that my classmates won’t be able to understand his words).

Tools: iPhone, iPad, iMovie, ibisXpaint for drawing, screen recording, and YouTube for music.

Project proposal:

Growing up in a strict household has definitely moulded me into the person I am today. For my project, I want to focus on how traditional culture has impacted my development as a person. My childhood consists of my parents telling me that hard work, dedication and good education and finding a rich husband will set me for life. As a child, I was oblivious. I never understood why I had to do so many extracurriculars after school when all my friends did not have to. I never understood why I was never allowed to hang out with my friends during weekdays. However, as I became older, I recognized that nothing I do now, will ever meet their unrealistic expectations. It took me a while to accept who I am as an individual today and understand that my view of “success” is completely different compared to my parents. Even today, I rarely talk to my parents about my life. We only talk about surface topics like “how's school.”

Outline

Growing up

What were your life expectations as a child?

Career goals

What was home like?

Relationship with sibling? parents?

Older brother (6years)

Were you close to your parents?

Personality as a child

how were you like as a child

Communication

Did your parents show affection?

Hugging

Did you talk to your parents a lot?

How close are you to your parents?

Teenage years

How did your goals change

What milestones have you achieved

Education

University application

What was high school like?

How did friends help you?

Personality now?

Now

How much has changed

Goals, family, relationships, individuality

I will be doing a slideshow that represents the topics I will be discussing. The conflict is my parent’s ideal future for me, and how it was difficult for me to take on that role. The pressure from my parents have made me an unhappy individual and it took me 19 years to accept who I am as an individual. I will also be explaining what I did to cope with so much stress. I will be using I do not have a cast for my project, it is a one man show. As for recording equipment, I will be using my laptop or my iPhone. As long as the video is not too pixelated, either will work. I will use iMovie to edit my clips.

The central theme that I am trying to show is how Asian families struggle growing up and living in Canada. For me, I struggled with identity and fitting in with my peers. I also struggled with accepting who I was. We’ll be explaining how we behaved at school and at home. It was sort of hard for me personally but I know others found it pretty easy. I want to show cultural differences between different ethnicities and how we are all alike and different in many ways. I will be interviewing my boyfriend and friends about their perspectives. First I’ll be introducing them and have us all explain our family backgrounds. Then I’ll be asking them questions.

Some of the questions that I’ll be asking are:

How have you tried to fit in with the other kids at school?

Have you ever faced discrimination and racism?

What is different between the school environments then compared to now?

Have your parents struggled in Canada?

What is your lifestyle like at home?

How has Asian stereotypes affected you if at all?

The conflict idea is about the term ‘whitewashing’ and the controversies that surround it. I want to get a deeper insight on how some Asians stray from their cultural identities to be viewed more ‘white’ which was the norm. Whitewashing definitely plays a big part in Asian kids’ lives when they’re trying to assimilate to society.

Reflecting on the central idea, I learned how to accept my background and myself for who I am. I learned how to stand up for myself and my people. It can be discouraging to see the disrespect that still occurs today especially when I read the news about it but I’m glad that it inspires many others and myself to not back down. It’s refreshing to see that Asian culture is being so loved these days that it definitely helps me and others be more proud of ourselves.

I will be making a short film on this. I will edit the video using Adobe Premiere Pro and film on my iPhone. My cast includes me, my boyfriend, and my friend Erin.

1) Growing up in a diverse city like Vancouver, I am constantly exposed to a variety of cultures, with the main one being the Chinese culture. With many of my friends being Chinese, I constantly hear them talk about how their parents do this and that, and I compare that to my own family. Sometimes, I am able to compare our families and see similarities, but sometimes I see differences as well. When I’m on Facebook, I see posts about the typical Chinese family from all parts of Canada and the US, but I cannot always relate to it. For my central idea, I want to focus on my family’s culture, how it influences our daily lives, and how my family compares to what is considered a typical Chinese family. Growing up in Canada, my sister and I are very influenced by the Canadian culture here, while also being exposed to the Chinese culture through our parents and other Chinese people we know. However, despite both my parents being Chinese, my mom was born in Zhongshan, China, while my dad was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Both of my parents are of Chinese descent, but they both grew up with different cultures as well. Seeing as my heritage and my parents’ heritage is so complicated with so many different cultures influencing it, it has always made me curious. As a result of this, I want to talk about how this difference affects my daily life, how it influences life, and how my family compares to other typical Chinese families. I am choosing to do a multimedia essay with parts of a video to help get a better sense of what I am introducing.

2) Main Topics:
A) My parents’ heritage

Where they came from

How they grew up

Their living situation

What they know

Choices they made to get to where they are today

Hardships they faced

B) How my family is

How we operate our daily lives

Important values

Tradition and Culture

Struggles

C)My sister and I

What we were taught growing up

How we were raised

Why we were named the way we are

How our culture affects our choices and likes (hobbies)

Tradition and cultural things we want to follow

D)Comparing my family to the stereotypical Chinese family(Cantonese and Mandarin)

Personality

Teachings

How they live daily

Traditions and culture

3) Members participating in the video:
My mom
My sister
Myself

4)Tools
To record: iPhone X camera
Edit software: iMovie

In my family, my dad is the backbone. He is the one who makes all the income to support the family, and he taught me that one day, I would be in the same position. It’s not just my dad who thinks this way either; My mom supports it too. She would always tell me things like, “a man should be a good provider”, “a man without a job is no man at all”, “a man with empty pockets will never find a wife.” But as I grow up, I have noticed that not everyone agrees with these ideas. Is it just my family that thinks this way? Do all chinese people think the same? How does this compare to the views of western society? These are the questions I plan to explore in my project.

I intend this project to be a comparison between chinese and western culture. Through this project, I hope to gain a better understanding of how gender roles are viewed in western society versus in Asia, and how it impacts culture. I am especially interested in how a person’s wealth and success can affect marriage dynamics, and whether or not such circumstances can result in marital conflicts. Does being a garbage man make a person a less attractive marriage partner? How much more so in Asia compared to here? Are expectations the same for everyone or do they differ across gender? To answer these questions, first, I will do some online research to gain a general understanding of how gender roles are viewed. Then, I will interview my family and friends and analyze how their views compare and contrast. And finally, I will summarize my findings and reflect on everything that I have learned. Possible questions that may be asked during the interviews:

To parents:

What is the role of a man in society? In family?

What is the role of a woman in society? In family?

Do you believe these roles make sense? Why?

If I grew up to become a professional garbage man in China, do you think I would be able to marry? Here?

To friends:

What is the role of a man in society? In family?

What is the role of a woman in society? In family?

Do you believe these roles make sense? Why?

Are you concerned about how success may affect your chances at finding a partner?

Would you marry into a poor family?

In the future, who do you think should be the one earning income in your family?

This project will be done in video format. I plan to film using my phone and edit using Shotcut. The cast will include my mom and dad, possibly my grandparents, and some friends that have yet to be decided. I hope to interview both male and female friends.

The central idea of your project & why is it important to you:

For the final project, I will be making a short film talking about my cultural background. This topic will allow me to explore the Chinese culture within me, as well as the Chinese culture that I lack. I will discuss what I think about my own cultural identity, my past and how it shaped me, as well as the challenges I have faced due to my cultural differences. I think this is a good idea because through the process of creating this film, it will help me understand myself better by reflecting on my past experiences with cultural differences and comparing the two valuable cultures within me. (Chinese culture and Canadian culture) This will also help me understand my parents more, as they were born and raised in China, and possess the Chinese culture that I lack.

Outline:

I will introduce where my family and I are from and why we moved to Canada. How this decision changed my cultural identity.

I will talk about the challenges I have faced while trying to adapt to the Canadian cultural, such as the living environment, lifestyle changes, and language barriers.

I will then explain how I overcame these challenges but at the cost of abandoning my Chinese culture. For example, I will talk about my experiences in elementary school and how I conformed to the Canadian society

I will then talk about the disconnection I feel between my parents and I due to the cultural differences. For example, I will talk about the language barrier, and the difficulties I faced while trying to understand them and the Chinese culture.

I will talk about my experiences in China and the cultural differences I observed between China and Canada. I will also talk about how going back to China helped me realize how important the Chinese culture is to me and motivated me to learn more about China.

I will talk about how I try to find the balance of this dilemma. Why I am learning Chinese and Chinese culture, and how it helps me understand my family better.

Lastly, I will talk about what kind of person I have become because of my situation and how grateful I am to experience all of this.

Maybe for bonus I will interview some friends about their cultural identity and how they deal with their culture differences.

Cast: My family and I (maybe friends)

Tools: Camtasia 2020 (video editing software) and camera

For the project, I am quite interested in exploring the concepts,

C) What does “I love you” look like in your family?

E) Take us on the journey of your family. Where are you from? Where are you now? How did you get here? What has changed or stayed the same?

Outline:

Cast: My older brother, I would like to invite my parents and I’ll try my best to get them involved, but they work in Kamloops, and my best friend, Julia.

Tools: Editing software, such as Imovie, and recordings will be taken from my phone.

Whenever I was asked about my family history, it was always so difficult to explain, due to how complex my life and lifestyle is -- moving from Vancouver, to Kamloops, and coming back, not always living with my parents (etc). Even though my lifestyle isn’t very conventional, my family dynamic is the same as many others in the class. The words, “I love you”, especially affection isn’t something my family is too accustomed to. Therefore the conflict is that, as they are more traditional, and since I come from a more diverse culture, being both Canadian and Chinese, we often don’t see things eye to eye. Watching movies, I was always jealous when the protagonist could always go to their parent(s) and tell them about their troubles, matters within their personal lives, or simply, just talking about their day. This concept is important to me, because, although my parents are very traditional, and even though their actions are sometimes quite harsh, they have another method of demonstrating love. Sometimes, we often cling onto the western concept of demonstrating parental love, and due to the clashing differences in our ideologies (our own beliefs versus our parents), that often causes a strain between child-parent relationships, especially for children of immigrants.

I was hoping to illustrate scenes in my life, and act it out. My brother and I have a different dynamic with our parents, therefore by having him there, I hope it demonstrates what our experiences were like. I think it took a while for me to understand my parent’s way of saying “I love you”, so I wanted to use this concept for my final project. I think a lot of my classmates may be able to relate to this, especially how it has shaped our cultural identity. In addition, I will be approaching this project by producing a multimedia essay. I want to use illustrations and add in voice audio’s in the background. The scenes will illustrate our family dynamic, and how my family approaches the concept of love.

Chinese 141 Final Project Proposal
My parents were never archetypes of “tiger-parenting”. Growing up, my parents did not push for stereotypically “Chinese” expectations, so I never solely focused on academics, my ability to play the piano, or other invaluable activities in the eyes of Chinese families. Many people tend to think that my childhood must have been perfect--I never experienced “Chinese parenting”, but in reality, I think I felt the disconnect between my family members and I even more so than most of my friends who have experienced such a manner of growing up.

A part of the reason why my childhood was somewhat unconventional for an Asian family is that I had met most of my family’s expectations. To the outside eye, I am capable, but in my family, we are quite disconnected in that my perspective is very different from that of my parents, and I cannot seem to be quintessentially Chinese. Even as a child in China, I gravitated towards what may be considered “Western things”. For example, I was drawn to ballet instead of Chinese Traditional dance, classical music played by the European instruments, and I possessed a 好奇心 that was unlike that of the ideal, obedient child. To this day, my family feels both proud but disillusioned with my achievements. Somehow I cannot see eye to eye with them, and frequently, their wishes for me are in contrast with my own. It is this disconnect in my family’s relationships, and the influence of Western culture in shaping my thought process that I will be focusing on.

For my final project, I would like to explore intergenerational relationships, with a focus on the effects of immigration, three generation households, and the values a Chinese family teaches unfound in conventional western families. I will not detail “tiger-parenting” as my focus will instead be on the nuanced differences in lifestyle that create a unique culture shared amongst children of Chinese diaspora. My project will begin with an introduction to my family members, as well as some of my own background to answer the question of “why immigrate?”. I will then explore the 思维方式 of Chinese families in comparison to that of Western families. My intention is to make a video through Microsoft video editor as well as my phone camera.

An outline of my intended video:
1. Introduction to my family background
- My family members, their 家乡, their lives in China before coming to Canada
- Some of the activities I did as a child in China: I may include embarrassing photos of my toddler years
- The decision to immigrate
- The role of my grandparents
2. Experiences from Growing up in Canada
- How my manner of thinking changed & attempts at belonging in Western Culture
- A growing disconnect with my family
- Why are my family members so focused on my success? Why care so much about 家庭? Why can’t we organize our own vacations instead of going with a tour? Why ask a family friend before googling?
3. What I have gained from growing up in a Chinese family
- A respect for hard work - 更加努力！
- An admiration for the good qualities associated with a close family
- Seeing my parents sacrifice so much because they really care about my growth
- An understanding of the daily communications between Chinese people
4. Other aspects to incorporate
- Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club- a book famous for its exploration of Chinese-American relationships, particularly between the daughter and the mother
- T&T Supermarket as a model for Chinese relationships in Canada
Surprisingly, I have a lot to say about T&T

I was born in Vancouver and have lived here my whole life whereas my parents grew up in China. Our childhood and experiences growing up are ultimately different. As a Canadian-born Chinese person, my parents would like to preserve my cultural background.

Therefore, they forced me to go to Chinese school to learn Cantonese when I was about five years old. However, they thought that I could continue to pick up Cantonese by just speaking to them at home since it was the language they spoke most so they decided to send me to learn Mandarin instead. Growing up, I never understood why since I thought I would never use Mandarin since my parents would just speak to me using Cantonese. I began hating it and eventually convinced my parents to let me stop. However, as I grew older, I began to understand the importance of knowing how to speak Chinese, both Cantonese and Mandarin. Not only was it important to my future, I actually enjoyed discovering the Chinese culture. I would listen to music from Chinese artists and I would watch Chinese shows. The more I watched and listened, the more I liked it. This is ultimately why I decided to learn Chinese by taking CHIN141. For this project, I am not completely sure yet but I am currently thinking of maybe doing an animation with myself voicing over everything or doing something like most Youtubers doing their “Draw my life” kind of thing. I will also interview my parents but I do not think they would like to be on camera so I will interview them and I will be saying their part as well. I would like to talk about their childhood in comparison to my childhood. I would like to talk more about my identity and how my experiences as an only child may differ from other families with siblings. The struggles, hardships and the pressures I had growing up in a Chinese family. Along with all the struggles and pressure I had to go through, I would also like to talk about how my parents love me. Although we don’t directly say “I love you”, I would like to talk about the actions and everything else that my parents do in place of that.

Outline:

Introduction

My background and personal information (e.g. name, where I was born, age, school, etc).

My family (e.g. where they were born and childhood experiences, etc

Interests and hobbies

My interests and hobbies (soccer, music, movies/dramas, celebrities, games)

My family members’ interests and hobbies (WeChat, movies/dramas, etc)

Growing up as an only child vs having siblings

Talk about everything I went through growing up in a Chinese family as an only child (both pros and cons)

Talk about either a friend or will do research on Chinese families with siblings

Evaluate and talk about the differences and similarities

Stereotypical Chinese family vs Reality

Many people have stereotypes for a common Chinese families (talk about the differences, the reality of it all and relate it to myself)

Talk about how parents, especially my parents, express love to their children

Cast: Basically just myself (will include interviews and stuff from my parents but I will be saying what they would like to say for them)

Tools: iPhone, iMovie, screen recording, and YouTube/Spotify for music

Format of Project:

The format of my project will be in an interview-style video. I will be asking certain questions to my parents and recording their answers. After I compile these videos, I will add my own response reflecting on their answers and stories and share my own opinions and stories. I have some experience editing videos and a good camera on my phone so I believe that I could make it look professional.

Main Idea:

For my Final Project, I want to focus on the differences between the way my parents grew up vs. how I grew up/am still growing up. My parents were both born in Taiwan and moved to the states for university.

I will focus on certain things that they’ve experienced growing up that I haven’t:

- My dad serving in the military for 2 years after turning 18 (mandatory)

- My mom growing up with two very busy business owner parents, having to be independent from a young age and maturing without an older influence in her life

- My mom fighting her parents for choosing Christianity as her religion instead of Buddhism

- Moving across the world to attend a university where you know no one and aren’t fluent in the language spoken there/ being an international student in general

- Attending intense Asian schools where kids were treated much harsher than here + school being much more intense in general

- Did your childhood play a role in how you raised my brother and I? If so, how big of a role?

This is important to me because I want to be able to understand how my parents grew up. I think it would be interesting to hear their opinions on whether or not they had a happy childhood, because this could factor into the decisions they made raising my brother and I. For instance, if they hated their childhoods, then that could be the reason why my brother and I grew up in a much different environment than they did. If they thought growing up that way was good, then maybe they would’ve moved back to Taiwan and started a family there.

I also plan on adding a personal reflection segment after the interviews. Here I will reflect on what my parents say and share my personal thoughts and opinions.

Certain topics may include:

- Am I happy that I was raised differently than my parents?

- What my thoughts are about the hardships they faced that I didn’t

- What are some hardships I believe they didn’t face that I face?

- Expressing my gratitude and appreciation to my parents and the effort they put in

Cast:

- 我

Tools:

- Recording device: iPhone 11 XR

- Editing software: Sony Vegas Pro 14 or iMovie

“Wanna drink bubble tea after class?” “Sure!”

“Mom, I’m going out now.” “Ok stay safe, have fun!”

“Hey uncle Ben, aunt May! How are you?” “Oh I’m doing great, how about you?”

Central Idea

I will create a multimedia essay for my final project. By using my Padlet essays, I will create a story about my life. It will look like a memoir as I will go through my photo albums and include family pictures. However, I will also include aspects of a comic/storybook in this project because I’m planning on hand drawing images to satisfy the multimedia criteria and to make it more entertaining to read. Also, my writing will be less formal because I want to eliminate any components that will make the essay dull and uninteresting.

This is important to me because I have never fully discussed my family history or even my heritage so this gives me a good reason to learn more about it from my mom.

Outline

I will break the essay down into four separate parts/ chapters based on the topics that this course covers.

Family and its members.

Chapter 1: I will refine and add to my first essay as well as adding some baby and family photos.

Family background and hometowns.

Chapter 2: I will include my second essay as well as more 特色 about 襄阳，my mother’s hometown. I’ll include pictures of 襄阳 and of Vancouver.

Habits and lifestyle.

Chapter 3: I will include my third essay in this chapter. Also, I wanted to answer the prompt “what does ‘I love you’ in my family looks like” because in my family, the words “I love you” is rarely said, instead, it's shown with actions so I think it would be interesting to depict and show those actions. This section will be mostly drawings as I don’t have many photographs on this.

Hobbies and interests.

Chapter 4: I will include my fourth essay into this chapter. I will go out and take pictures as well as draw them.

Cast

Because I am creating a multimedia essay instead of a video, I will not need a cast, however, I will recruit my mom to tell me more about our family and my friend to help me take pictures outside.

Tools

I will use google docs, google translate, pen, markers, Sketchbook (digital drawing app), and OneNote to put it all together.

Timeline

Complete Chapter 1 before November 8th

Complete Chapter 2 before November 15th

Complete Chapter 3 before November 22nd

Complete Chapter 4 before November 29th

Due December 10th

在二十世纪(shi4ji4, centry)中，他跟他的哥哥移民(yi2min2, migrant)去印尼(yi4ni2)，是为了(wei4le, for the purpose of)要找(zhao3, find)到比较(bi3jiao4, rather)好的生活。 （在这个照片我的爸爸是2nd from the right）。

改变不太always mean that it is bad。

–Insert Interview Clip no.1– (my reply to their answers depend on what they say. I’ll write a generic reply for now; after interviewing them, I’ll tailor and polish it)

–Insert Interview Clip no.2–

–Insert Interview Clip no.3–

——English Version——

Hello everyone, my name is 朱翠琳. “翠” comes from 翡翠 (jade) and “琳” comes from 琳瑯满目 (expensive and dazzling things). You guys can call me linlin or by my English name, Elaine. Then what will we talk about today? Of course we’ll talk about me! I’m 19 years old this year and I’m in my second year of university at UBC. Actually, I was born in China, but my Chinese isn’t too good because I was five-years-old when I immigrated to Vancouver, so since I was little, I spoke more English and less Chinese. My mother, maternal grandfather, maternal grandmother, and my aunt were all born in ZhanJiang just like me, so all of us speak Cantonese. I hope you guys won’t joke about my Mandarin!

Because my entire family is Chinese (born and raised in China), and I’m only of Chinese descent (but not raised in China), I sometimes feel like everyone’s habits, beliefs, hobbies, and lifestyles aren’t the same. For example, in regard to hobbies, I like to watch American movies such as The Avengers, Thor Ragnarok, and White Chicks. But, my family members like to watch Wolf Warrior, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, and the Story of Yanxi Palace. In addition, I like celebrities of any nationality, e.g. Cai Xukun, Zhou Shen, Hua Chenyu, Yuzuru Hanyu, Lewis Capaldi, and NCT, but my family members only like Chinese celebrities, such as Hacken Lee, Fei YuQing, Zhong Zhentao, and Joey Yung. Our living habits are also different. I’m used to using Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, but they are used to using WeChat, TaoBao, and Douyin (tiktok). In the mornings, I’m used to eating bread, but they are used to going to a restaurant to eat dim sum. I’ll usually eat Advil when I’m sick, but when they’re sick, they’ll usually drink Chinese herbal medicine. Isn’t this very different?

We also have different opinions in regard to holidays. I think Christmas should be very lively, but my family thinks that it should be (plain and) simple. This is because they didn’t celebrate Christmas when they were younger and only celebrated Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. In terms of the details of our lifestyles, we have a habit of wearing slippers right when we enter the house, unlike Canadian people who like to wear shoes at home. Another example is, we Chinese people don’t like to use the dishwasher because the dishwasher is a waste of money and the dishes won’t be as clean as washing it by hand. Do you guys use the dishwasher to wash dishes at home? Is it clean? Can you tell me? I’m very curious.

The last thing I need to discuss is my family and I’s beliefs and thoughts. This is the most important point. Most of my thoughts are different from my family’s, hence we’ll have a lot of arguments (over this). Three topics that we argue the most about are education, work, and marriage. I’ll first ask my mother and maternal grandmother: how important do they think education is? Is education more important or happiness? What if their children don’t want to attend university but instead only wants to attend vocational school?

–Insert Interview Clip no.1– (my reply to their answers depend on what they say. I’ll write a generic reply for now; after interviewing them, I’ll tailor and polish it)

I knew that they’d give this kind of answer. I believe that I’m happy when my child is happy, so I don’t care whether my child wants to attend university or vocational school. What about work? What job does my Chinese family members think is the best? Does it have to be a well-paid job? Is the salary more important or happiness? Why?

–Insert Interview Clip no.2–

What you said makes sense, but I still think that happiness is more important. My thought pattern is, my child’s happiness is the most important; he can do whatever he wants to. There’s still the topic that I disagree with my family the most—marriage. A few years ago, I heard my mom and my grandmother say that a woman must marry before the age of 30, or else no man would want her. I really dislike these kinds of thoughts. Why wouldn’t anyone marry girls older than 30? A lot of people still want them! Perhaps, since a few years have passed, their thoughts may have changed, so right now I’m going to ask them once more. Before what age do they think women have to marry? Do women have to marry?

–Insert Interview Clip no.3–

No wonder I have arguments with my family. Do your family members think like this too? Although my beliefs, habits, hobbies, and lifestyle is different from my family’s, I know that this is because we grew up in different environments, so I can’t blame them for thinking this way. You guys also have to be more understanding of your family’s thought patterns because family is irreplaceable. Okay, we’ll meet again next time!

This is my Chinese video project. In this video, I will be discussing my family and its members as well as the hobbies and interests each of them possesses.

Family Intro:

This is my family! Say hi to the camera everyone! This is my father, Shawn and he is from Guangzhou, China. This is my mother, Connie and she is also from Guangzhou, China. The three girls here are my younger sisters, Olivia, Emma, and Kaycie. Olivia is fifteen years old and is in high school. Emma and Kaycie are twins and are in the eighth grade. Both of them are thirteen years old. Lastly, we have me! I am Felicia and in my first year of university. All four of us were born in Vancouver, Canada.

Hobbies and Interest:

Throughout the years, my family had many different types of hobbies and interests, however, with Covid-19 a few of our previous hobbies are no longer possible. Instead, we have found new hobbies that we have come to enjoy.

My father’s hobbies and interests include hiking, playing ping-pong, and badminton. Hiking with his friends is no longer possible, so he takes strolls after dinner with my mother. Playing ping-pong and badminton at a gym is no longer possible as well, however, my father found a way around that. He plays ping-pong with my sisters on a folding table and sometimes I join in on the fun as well. Most of the time he would play with us after dinner and the completion of our chores. My dad, mom, and younger sisters would all sometimes play badminton in the afternoon if they have nothing else to do. My family would play badminton in our backyard or sometimes in the alleyway when the weather is nice.

My mother’s hobbies and interests include swimming, yoga, and hiking, however, swimming and hiking are no longer possible so she mainly does yoga in her spare time. Most often she does yoga before getting ready to go to bed but there are times when she does it in the afternoon when she has free time. Besides doing yoga, my mom also plays badminton with my sisters and dad and goes on walks after dinner with my dad. My mother enjoys yoga as it is her only time for herself that we do not interrupt.

My sister Olivia’s hobbies and interests have not changed much even with Covid-19. Her hobbies and interests are watching Netflix and scrolling on her phone. She likes to watch Netflix a lot as there are many Korean dramas and animes that spark an interest for her. She also likes to watch anime as she is learning Japanese at school and hopes to improve. Olivia adores going on her phone especially for social media apps such as TikTok and Instagram as well as Facetime with her friends. She likes to do TikTok dances and records herself doing them all over the house.

My sister Emma’s hobbies and interests are playing games on her laptop and cooking. Since Emma and Kaycie are twins they often like to play together. They both like to play games on their laptops such as Roblox, Minecraft, and Among Us with their friends. She also likes to cook and is better at cooking than me. Some of her favourite things to make is fried donuts, spicy noodles, and cheese sticks.

My sister Kaycie’s hobbies and interests are playing games on her laptop, playing ping-pong and badminton, and dancing. Besides playing games with her friends and Emma, she also likes to play ping-pong and badminton with my dad since it is a good way to exercise. She along with Emma also like to dance and listen to Korean pop songs but they do not like us seeing them dance.

My hobbies and interests include painting my nails, reading, and watching Korean variety shows. I like to paint my nails as it gives me a sense of happiness. I have also started reading again and realized I missed it. The only difference is that I can no longer go to libraries but instead download the books to read on my phone. My favourite show is Running Man and I almost always try to find time to watch the show as it brings me joy.

Lastly, an interest that my sisters and I all enjoy is singing as it allows us to spend time with one another without us constantly looking at our phones. Although we are bad at singing it does not stop us from being happy.

Ending:

I hope you enjoyed learning about my family and our hobbies. Thank you for watching!

Hi everyone! My name is 关顺礼, and my English name is Kevin, I am currently a first-year student at UBC. I am thinking of majoring in Economics, but I am not sure yet. My name’s 顺 is the 顺 in successful, the 礼 is the 礼 in manners. My mom really likes things with meaning, which is why she chose the names for my Chinese and English names. My mom wants me to grow up to be successful and to have good manners towards others, which is why she chose my Chinese name. The meaning of Kevin is a man who is handsome, kind, and gentle, which is why my mom chose to name me that as she hopes I can be that person.

I feel like my family is considered a small family, this is because we are a family of four. In my family, there’s my dad, mom, my sister and I. Lately I feel like my family is even smaller because my sister is a second year student at Western, therefore she is currently living with her friend over there. Because of this, we are currently a family of three. My dad works as an accountant for Teluss. Even though I feel like his job is extremely good as you can make a lot of money and travel and work in many countries. However, I also feel ling the job is very hard as he always has to go to meetings and is always busy, therefore I feel thankful for my dad for doing so much for our family. My mom is just at home doing chores and making food for us to eat. I feel like my mom’s job is also very hard because there are chores and things to do everyday, but she does not get paid for this job, everyday my mom works hard to take care of us. Because of this reason, whenever I have time, I try to help her out.

My sister and I were both born and raised in Vancouver, but my mom and dad were both born and raised in different places. Even though both of them are Guangdong people, only my mom was born and raised in Guangdong. My mom is from Zhongshan, she has four sisters and one brother. Even though my dad was not born in Guangdong, he is still considered a Guangdong person, this is because of the Chinese saying which states that whereevever the father came from, the child is considered from there as well. Even though my dad was born in South Africa, but my dad is still considered a Guangdong person because my grandpa is from Foshan. My grandpa and grandma immigrated to South Africa because at the time there was a war going on in China, that’s why after leaving the country, they went to South Africa to start a new life.

When my mom grew up, she would often help her family make money because at the time, my mom’s family’s lifestyle was not as good as now. In the past, my mom would tell us stories of when she was younger, how she often sold fruits with my uncle. Because of their hardwork, that’s why they are doing so well right now. In the past after finishing high school my mom would start earning money, that’s why my mom feels like school is extremely important because she thinks we are very lucky to be able to go to university when she couldnn’t. Because of my mom’s family’s hardwork, they are all very successful now. Because of this reason, my mom thinks the most important quality in a person is how hardworking they are. Because of my mom’s lifestyle back then, she is very strict towards me and my sister because she wants us to be successful as well. My mom would often ask about situations at school, if we finished our homework yet, how our tests went, and more.

Growing up, my dad’s family lived happily as they had money. My grandpa and grandma opened a very successful store, making lots of money for them. Because they have a successful store and no money problems, my dad would just focus on school, going out with friends, and more. Even though my grandpa was very strict, my dad feels like he had a good childhood. Because my dad’s childhood was so relaxing, that’s why he isn’t as strict, whatever we want to do, he will let us. The thing my dad is most strict about is school because he feels like since he did well in school, that is how he got such a good job and got to where he is today. Because my mom and dad grew up differently, that is why I think my mom and dad’s cultures are different in some ways, but similar in others.

After recieving my mom and dad’s teachings, I feel like I take school seriously. Ever since starting high school, I have been placed in advanced programs. Even though I did not feel like these programs were hard, they had way more homework than the normal program students. Because of how strict my parents were when I was little, I rarely went out with friends, instead I often stayed at home to do homework, play video games, practice taekwondo, and more. However in the middle of high school, I started making more friends, going out more, therefore my hobbies started changing as well. Before my favourie hobbies would be doing taekwondo, playing video games, or playing basketball. Now my favourite hobbies would be going out with friends, watching movies, and more activities that are done outdoors. Because of my parent’s strictness, therefore I don’t think university is as hard as others think because I got used to this level of difficulty from my high school programs. Even though I feel like online learning is a little harder to understand, I feel like once I get used to it, then it is no problem. Because of my parent’s teaching, I am the person I am today.

Hello everyone, my name is Richard Han.”rui” is the “rui” from “auspicious”, “qi” is the “qi” from “chinese unicorn”. I am a first year student. My final project is about the families of heritage students. I think that the families of heritage students have a lot of similar situations. For example, the things we think are important and how we communicate. There are 4 people in my family, my dad, mom, brother and I. My dad and brother are software engineers, and my mom used to learn about software, so they want me to also become a software engineer. Although they want me to become a software engineer, my mom also wanted me to study medicine, but I didn’t want to study medicine, because it’s too difficult. I’ve noticed that many parents of heritage students want them to become doctors. This is because doctors can make a lot of money. A lot of heritage student’s parents think that money is very important. Because many good jobs require you to do well in school, so the parents of heritage students put a lot of pressure on them to get perfect scores. In the past, I told my mom that I got 98% in my math class, but she was still not satisfied, she asked me, “Why didn’t you get 100%?” My mom also often compares me to other people. This makes me think that my grades are never enough, and it also makes me feel stressed. I think that the parents of heritage students really like showing off their children’s achievements. My mom is also like this, so this makes me feel a little embarrassed. Recently, a good heritage friend of mine told me that his mom compares his grades to my grades because his grades aren’t too good. I also told him that my mom compares him and I because he is a skilled swimmer and I don’t have any special skills. Both of us don’t like being compared like this. I think sex education is seen as taboo in Chinese culture. My parents have never spoken to me about this. I learned it on my own from the internet. I think that some Chinese people don’t really like using affectionate words. For example, I have never said “I love you” with any of my family, nor have I heard them say this phrase. Although I am not very comfortable using this phrase, Westerners often say this phrase. I also think not saying “I love you” is alright, because people should rely on their actions to convey these feelings. My parents have raised me for many years, how could they not love me. We only have to put our love in our hearts (don’t need to express it? I’m not sure how to translate this from Chinese)

Introduction:

E: Hi everyone! My name is David Liu. Today, I want to share some of my parents' experiences. They were both born and raised in Taiwan. In 1994, they both moved to the United States to attend universities. My brother and I were both born in the United States, and we moved to Canada in 2011. I want to ask my father and mother a few questions about when they were younger.

E = English

Part 1: Interview with my Parents

E: Hi Mom and Dad, welcome to my interview. Today, I will ask you guys some questions.

E: Okay!

E: Okay, I will ask dad first. When you were 23 years old, you had to serve in the military. I know that you didn’t want to go. Why not?

E: Yes, I really didn’t want to go. First, we had to shave our heads. Second, there’s no freedom. Third, being away from home. Fourth, the officers were very mean because they had to train us.

E: When you guys moved from Taiwan to the United States, your guys’ English wasn’t very good. So how hard was it when you guys went to class?

E: When we went to class, it was really challenging because we couldn’t understand what the professor was saying. So, we had to ask our classmates “What is the professor saying?”. When we did homework, we had to borrow our classmates’ notes.

E: So, Mom, when you were growing up, grandpa and grandma didn’t have that much time to look after you. This is different from when I was growing up. What allowed you to learn how to take care of yourself?

E: Because if I didn’t learn to do things, there was nobody there to help me do it. This is because when I saw how busy my parents were, I just wanted to help them out.

E: How difficult was going to school in Taiwan?

E: We went to class for a long time, had a lot of homework, had very difficult tests, and the teacher hit us if we did poorly on tests.

E: From Monday to Saturday, we start class at 8 in the morning, and finish class at 5 in the afternoon. After class, we have to go to the tutor until 9 at night until we can go home. We still have to study on Sundays.

E: So do you think my brother and I studying in Canada is too easy?

E: We think that you guys have too little homework, but it’s not necessarily too easy.

E: Do you guys think I could study in Taiwan?

E: Absolutely not!

E: Did your childhood experiences influence the way you raised my brother and I?

E: Of course! Because our parents didn’t have much time to spend with us, we spend more time with you guys.

E: We also took you guys out to play very often.

E: Okay, thank you.

Part 2: Self - Reflection

E: I am very happy that I grew up in Canada. I think if I was to study in Taiwan, I would cry everyday. My father and mother's class hours were too long, they were so hard-working. They also were hard-working because their parents were busy as well. I am very lucky that they spend time with my brother and I. I think that because my brother and I are in Canada and our homework load is lesser, we have more time to learn other things, such as basketball. I now want to help my parents more because I now understand how hard-working they are. I really love them.
