Feb 24. - our whole family had Covid for the first time. I woke up to shellings around 6:30am. I looked out the window and saw rows of cars miles/hours long leaving the city and wondering what was going on? It was a cloudy day so I couldn’t tell how far or close the shells were. To me they were bombs. Every time I heard a “boom” I imagined the worst and wanted to get out! On the morning of the 25th the sounds got louder! We packed three bags for the four of us knowing we may never see anything in Kyiv again, and walked fast to the school bunker/basement. School has many functions - educate, mold character, provide hope and support for the future, BUT in that moment it provided us with shelter, safety, and promise. Promise that we would survive in a time when we were not sure that was going to be possible. On the 27th we walked across the border, and felt a sense of freedom but looked back with a sense of helplessness for those we left behind. We knew they could be strong, some chose to stay, and wished them the best! Ви нашим козакам прийшли на зміну,
Сміливці, віддані своїй землі,
Ви — дар богів для України,
Захисники жінок і матерів...

Ви захищали Маріуполь з Азовсталлю,
Ділили прихисток з жінками і дітьми,
Допоки сил і зброї  доставало,
Всі разом виживали, як могли...

Підкріплень не було — всі сили
Були на півночі і захищали Київ.
Знайшовся зрадник. Шлях крізь міни
Із Криму на Херсон проклав
І південь України здав.
На тім шляху завод був Азовсталь
Й Марії місто — Маріуполь.
Хтось на даху театра написав
Священне  слово-захисник: тут ДІТИ.
Це слово мало зупинити 
Цивілізованих пілотів всіх країн,
Та тільки не рф. Пілот був не один:
На той театр десятки бомб летіли,
Знайти б в уламках хоч одне вціліле тіло!
Розчавлені, розірвані, розбиті
Жінки і діти, вірою сповиті,
Що місто встоїть, що не віддадуть
Загарбникам їх Маріуполь. Не забуть
Зелених вулиць і будинків світлих,
Де так щасливо жили їхні сім’ї...

Азовці й далі захищатись 
Були готові й  до кінця 
У прихистку таємному зостатись.
Але ні за що скласти зброю й здатись...

О, пане президенте! Вірю я, 
Що ви життя героям зберегти хотіли.
“Віддайте зброю! Здайтеся в полон!
Червоний Хрест подба і  все мине, як сон.
Вас підлікують, підгодують
Й до обміну з своїми підготують...
На вражих генералів обміняємо
Ми воїнів-героїв, обіцяємо!
   
Не можна карликам кремлівським довіряти,
Обдурять кадебісти батька й матір,
На обіцянки,  президентів їм начхати!
А Хрест Червоний  - то запроданці прокляті!
Оленівко! Стань  пам’ятником зради!
Коли на землю на твою вернеться наша влада
Ми пам’ятник Азову там зведемо.
А зрадників навіки проклянемо!

Each time I do, I'm hoping to see that the cracks in Putin's coalition of butchers and thieves have widened into breaks that will signal a collapse, or that Ukrainian troops have broken through and are beginning the rout that will push the ruzzians out of Ukraine (ALL of Ukraine) once and for all. I know that the second of those things will happen. I deeply hope that the first will as well, but, honestly, it's not nearly as important. When the war has ended, and Ukraine has cleared its land of invaders / occupiers / thieves / rapists, and murderers, I know there will be rapturous joy and boundless expressions of gratitude to those supported, those who fought, and those who gave all. Then, there will be the terrible counting of all the things that have been taken, lost, vandalized, broken, stolen, or destroyed. Some of those things will be material. Others will be economic and / or social. Many will be human; families, family members, individuals who will never again be entirely free of the horror that was visited upon them, but against which they stood, fought, persevered and prevailed. After the counting, of course, there will be grieving. It will be bottomless, and suffused with righteous rage. I believe and hope with all my heart that Ukrainians will, as they have always done, will show the world what true humanity and virtue looks like, and forgo the entirely understandable desire to perpetuate the violence. Rather, I believe Ukraine will turn away from their broken, bankrupted enemy and leave it to find its own way out of the darkness it has fostered and inflicted on an entire country. I believe Ukraine will turn to a brighter newer vision of its own future, one free of the choking tentacles of ruzzian interference and influence, to build a better world for those who remain. Many will struggle with physical and emotional wounds that will never truly heal. Many who left will return, and some will struggle to find a place among those who did not. But I believe they will find their way home. Financial support will continue to flow into Ukraine, some in the form of reparations given by or taken from the perpetrators. New roads and buildings will be created. New institutions will be formed. Communities will release the clenched energy of constantly wondering about the next danger, and begin to breathe deep and free as they plant, build, grow, and expand again. There will be lasting peace. There will be unfettered, unrestricted, unconditional freedom. There will be life, and laughter, and music, and food, and dancing again.
