I grew up in Mexico just South of Brownsville, TX in the early 1980's. My parents were both college educated, but I don't have many memories of them reading to me. I do remember having a collection of Disney character books that were bought from traveling sales people, like those who used to sell encyclopedias. These were in Spanish. I began to learn English when I started school in Brownsville at the age of seven.

In elementary school I was an ELL. I was still living in Mexico, and my parents did not and would never speak English. I don't recall my experiences with reading at that age, but I do remember loving the book fair and buying one book that I read many, many times (Frosty the Snowman). By then I was able to read to my younger brother.
It sounds cliché, but I was a shy kid , and while I did have some good friends, books were my best friends. My passion for reading started with my 4th grade teacher. As a treat she would read a chapter from Wayside Stories from Wayside School every day after recess. I was hooked from that point on.

I read indiscriminately. I read anything that caught my eye, and this was usually books such as the Great Illustrated Classics, The Boxcar Children, Lois Lowry and Judy Blume. Reading made me genuinely happy. I felt so accomplished. Being able to read in English was a beautiful thing for someone who was the first in her family to speak the language. I read wherever I could, especially at home in the afternoons. In the days before cell phones and widespread access to the internet, reading was my entertainment.

As a teacher, parent and wife it has been more difficult to find the time to read as much as I would love. I still enjoy reading, but it may take me longer to finish books. I personally do not enjoy audio books, so that means I can't "read" while on the go, but I am getting better at carving out time to dedicate to my books.
As an adult I have found that I enjoy suspense novels more than any other genre. I recently went through a period in which I read at least ten Mary Higgins Clark books, but I am currently reading a Dean Koontz book.

I am a Spanish teacher at a school where many students enjoy reading. In my class we don't have the opportunity to read more than very short and simple stories in the target language, but I encourage reading none the less. In the classroom I have several easy reader books in Spanish that my students can borrow at any time.
I have used student-oriented social networks before, but this year I switched to Google Classroom due to ease of use.
