My parents were both college educated, but I don't have many memories of them reading to me. I do remember having a collection of Disney character books that were bought from traveling sales people, like those who used to sell encyclopedias. I don't recall my experiences with reading at that age, but I do remember loving the book fair and buying one book that I read many, many times (Frosty the Snowman). By then I was able to read to my younger brother.  
It sounds cliché, but I was a shy kid , and while I did have some good friends, books were my best friends. In my class we don't have the opportunity to read more than very short and simple stories in the target language, but I encourage reading none the less.  In the classroom I have several easy reader books in Spanish that my students can borrow at any time.
