Leaving it behind

When I found out I was chosen to go on this journey, I was beyond excited. But the more I thought about the risks of what could happen and the struggles I might have to face, the idea of leaving my home for a completely unfamiliar place began to get a little nerve wracking. I wondered if I would ever return. Leaving my family and friends behind, with no guarantee that I would ever see them again, was a frightening thought. However, I decided to go because I was excited to seek out an adventure and I did believe this was a once in a life time experience. I think the journey will be a good learning experience and an opportunity to travel and see more of the world with the highly praised and honorable Mansa Musa.
- Kylie Wenger

We have been traveling for a while and have reached Timbuktu. When we got there a few hardships came, a few of our camels had died and we had to distribute the items on that camel to all the other camels. But other than that Timbuktu is a beautiful and amazing sight to see. We are just passing through it though, which makes me sad because I would love to see all of the of the pretty buildings and art made. On our way we got to see something really cool, it was Sankore University which gave a free education to any Islamic Scholars from far and near, but it's only like that because of Mansa Musa's funding. It was very interesting to see his impact on the cultures.
-Vanessa Harrison

The great journey was sadly coming to an end, however it was very relieving when our caravan returned. People gathered around to greet the returning travelers. There were many tears and hugs. My family was ecstatic to see me, as I was to see them. They were so eager to find out every detail about my trip. They asked me questions about my experiences that got me thinking about if the trip was worthwhile. Ultimately I have decided that I wish I would have stayed home. Although the experience was amazing and I learned many things about traveling, my body and mind went through stress, unbearable heat, pain, and sickness that could have been avoided. I learned tips for survival and I learned about different cultures. But I missed my family and friends the entire time, and I missed out on things in my hometown that I will never get to experience. I will forever cherish the memories and lessons learned on this journey but I will always be stuck wondering what I missed out on and how different my life could be without the trip.
- Kylie Wenger

After getting through Timbuktu, we started our journey to Cairo another place we were going through. When we got there let me tell ya it was crazy. any people were there to see Mansa Musa. Mansa Musa's generosity and religious devotion gave him a great look. Many people liked him for that. One of his visits to Cairo made him look like a well rounded guy, when he traveled there, he invested so much gold into their economy that the value of gold was lowered. So, when we were there many people were amazed with the visit of him and I feel honored to have been in the same group traveling as him.
-Vanessa Harrison

While researching this topic, I learned about how much of an impact a single person can have on a culture and society. Learning about how much of an impact Mansa Musa had back then, made me think of the possibilities that our generation has today. The technology and relations we have today, allows for endless possibility in creating and helping others. I related Mansa Musa and his wealth to Microsoft creator, Bill Gates. Bill Gates is the Mansa Musa of our time. People look up to him and aspire to have his wealth and creative mind. I think this is much like how people thought of Mansa Musa. This topic helped me understand my own potential and helped me to see the benefits of hard work and giving to those less fortunate.
- Kylie Wenger

After we left Cairo we finally reached our destination Mecca!! When we got there I was amazed to see all of the beautiful sights in mecca. I have never seen anything like it. When getting there we had a few bumps but nothing big, just a few camels got sick and had to get them back to good health, but other than that it was good. The whole reason we are here is because is so Mansa Musa can do the fifth pillar of Islam (very religious man if you didn't know.) We also got to go to Medina which isn't far from Mecca but it was where Muhammad Tomb was. When in Mecca I got to do and visit many things along the way. Im very thankful to have been choosen to go on this trip with him it means a lot and hope to be apart of this journey!!-Vanessa Harrison
