Eriksons Generativity vs. Self-absorption and Stagnation.

At this developmental stage, individuals want to inspire and teach future generations. Alongside this they want to find a sense of fulfillment within themselves. They turn towards parenthood and volunteering in their local communities. Being a parent, one can easily get caught up in this stage and forget that they need to do things themselves. That is why it is important to do things for oneself to avoid developing unhealthy patterns that could extend into the next developmental stage.

Piagets theory: Formal operations She says that in this stage middle adults have developed more ways of thinking instead of being concrete. The possibilities one can think of could be endless. I think this is important because this stage on top of there being many lifestyle changes, jobs can change too and these individuals in this stage should know that this is normal instead of feeling alone. Nursing consideration for this should include assessing the cognitive capacity of the individuals you are caring for when providing health care teaching.

Kohlbergs theory: Stage 6: Universal Ethical Principle Orientation By this middle stage individuals should know what they believe in and that it sometimes requires standing up for yourself.

During older adulthood, integrity vs. despair is the basic conflict that most people face. According to Erik Erickson's theory of development, older adults assess their life and the meaning of the contributions they have made. They can either feel satisfied that they lived their life well or feel regret about the choices and opportunities they missed in life. Losing interest in activities and social isolation can lead to depression in older adults so nurses can encourage patients to keep their minds active and try new hobbies.

Piaget’s theory states that adults have achieved the formal operational stage and can apply abstract logic. Adults are able to use hypothetico-deductive reasoning and form a hypothesis. Nurses can educate older adults about their health and allow them to use their advanced reasoning to make informed decisions to improve their quality of life.

Postconventional reasoning can occur in older adults. Kohlberg’s theory states that at this level of reasoning people follow universal ethical principles and don’t just blindly obey laws. Older adults have had a long time to develop their own personal values. Nurses can recognize the moral principles that patients have and respect a patient’s wishes when it comes to code status and treatment options.

Harleen Arora

Growth is more rapid than any other period after birth, doubling birthweight by 5 months and tripling birthweight by 1 year. This understanding should guide the nurse when considering malnutrition in infants. If the nurse notices the baby is not growing as quickly as "normal" they should consider feeding schedules, how they are feeding, what they are feeding, how they are mixing formulas, etc.

-Ashley

Toddlerhood is between the ages of 12 months and 36 months, where physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development is critical. According to Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development, the development of autonomy vs. shame and doubt are emphasized. Toddlers are discovering being independent, along with skills of feeding, mobility, dressing, and elimination. Being self sufficient is important to encourage to help toddler’s have a good understanding of self-concept.

-Emily
