I am hopeful for the sustainability of nonprofits because there will always be people with the heart to serve and build stronger communities. However, I’m less hopeful about the sustainability of the systems that fund and support these organizations. The ecosystem is failing to provide job quality and stability; many people working for the city, for instance, can’t even afford to live in it. Cost of living isn’t just about money; it’s about access to childcare, affordable housing, healthcare, quality education, and food security. Without addressing these systemic gaps ( which I acknowledge has been mentioned here today in one way or the other) we are already burning out the very people sacrificing to build a better society.
