These three perspectives are poison to the mindset we need in order to be creative. Authority should be questioned; it’s how the current authority came to be. Rules aren’t infallible; they’re best guesses, and—if a good authority is in place—they’re constantly evolving, allowing us the opportunity to affect and contribute to their evolution. And lastly, the finish line—in the real world—is almost always invisible at the start. We are taught at a young age that once we complete our assignments—which have been clearly laid out for us—then all our work is done. This teaches us not only to look outward rather than inward for direction but also to expect to know the end result before we even lift a finger.
