1) Duolingo

Duolingo is a free, fun and addictive language learning app that is easy to use across devices and allows students to set and monitor their own goals while learning at their own pace. Students are motivated as they are rewarded with XP, and can maintain a streak.

Duolingo can be enjoyed by ELLs who are new to English as well as those who already have some experience. It does a diagnostic for students to determine their level if they do not select 'beginner'. It supports curriculum learning as students use their reading, listening, oral, and writing skills to learn spelling and grammar via activities such as Flashcards/word association, word recognition, multiple choice, fill in the blanks, rearrange sentences, dictation, pronunciation, etc. It offers immediate feedback for answers so students learn to make the correct associations/spelling choices.

This app mainly supports the learning of Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (Everyday English) but due to more complex grammar structures as well as subject specific vocabulary later in the app it can also offer minimal support for development of Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (ex learning passive voice). As Joylyn mentioned in her post, Duolingo can be used by teachers to create an online classroom to help students collaborate while following their progress (thanks Joylyn!).

While iDuolingo does allow students to use their first language, it has more limited choices than some other apps (see language list below).

2) Babbel

Babbel is a fun and easy to use paid language app (only the first activity of each course is free to try), which mainly offers European 1st language support. It helps students develop BICS through conversational activities such as fill in the blank and matching, but may support some CALP development as well as curriculum learning with the more advanced paid activities, therefore while Babbel is good for beginner ELLs, more advanced learners may find it too easy, especially if they do not have access to the paid activities. See the table below for the language and topic lists:

I actually had not heard of Mango Languages until Joylyn shared it in her post. I am really glad I checked it out!

Mango Languages is a resource that is Free for students through their Library Account. It supports ELLs who are complete beginners and supports BICS development through conversational activities. What I liked most about it is that it offers an extensive list of first languages (see table below). Please check out my Powtoon below the table for more details about the app!

I feel that these resources support ELLs by encouraging an appreciation of multilingualism. Students don't have to learn just English, they can learn any other language too ex if their friends speak it, if they plan to one day travel to that country/region, or just out of curiosity! As the quote says, it expands their horizons and encourages sharing of ideas and cultures, which is in line with Canadian ethics and global citizenship.
