The idea that I'm recommending particular books to particular kids makes me realize how empty my cupboard is when it comes to knowledge of fiction that might really speak to 9th graders. In fact, I think the discipline has always struggled with this. The classic example is thinking for 50 years that the Catcher in the Rye really speaks to teenagers. Which ones?!?!?!??!?!?!??    :)

However, when we sit and listen for 90 minutes without being asked to actively interact with these ideas, it's hard to absorb them, and it doesn't help us process how to implement them into our school. We are not left feeling innovated and excited, rather we are left feeling lost and drained.
