The emperor Nero was known for his madness. He began his reign well, by giving the Senate more power, banning secret trials, giving slaves certain rights, and other good deeds. However, wild stories about him began to circulate, like that he had seduced married women and young boys, and had castrated a male slave and "married" him, and he later killed his controlling mother. The Great Fire of Rome began, and Nero was rumored to have played instruments and sung while Rome burned and he blamed the fire on Christians. An officer asked a slave to kill him, but betrayed the slave; the slave didn't give up the names of his coconspirators, but Nero killed huge numbers of people. Finally, a revolt spread and the Senate declared Nero a public enemy, so that he could be legally killed by anyone, and he fled and killed himself.
