Today I've learned how music is so important in our cultures. Without music we cannot understand Humanity and the different ways of living that coexist in the world. There is a wide variety of styles of music throughout the world but the deep meaning of each type is more or less the same. We just need to listen to them carefully. And this is what we have tried to do today.
And the picture is about the roots of these people of Guadeloupe. Their ancestors were forced to leave Africa in a hursh conditions. But nowadays, the local people are full of live and they have filled their island with a wonderful music and vibrant rhythms.
Thanks a lot to Michelle, William, George, Jean-Marie and George's son (sorry, but I don't remember his name).

I already knew some fruits from Guadeloupe before, but today I got so many new information’s about the plants and the fruits cultivated in Guadeloupe. Some of them were not native to Guadeloupe and have been brought by immigrants or the European Settlers/Conquerors which has replenished the flora of Guadeloupe. Nowadays these plants became part of the native flora of Guadeloupe. Therefore, it took a similar development as the culture of the people of Guadeloupe.

I also get to know the drums of Guadeloupe, the gwo ka and the seven different rhythms of gwo ka (the name gwo ka is also used for the type of music played with the drums).

Music is an important part of the culture and of the identity, therefore you can learn much about the people and their habits by listening to their music and their rhythms. It was a great pleasure for me to even play the gwo ka and listen to the sound of the others around me playing gwo ka and sing to the rhythms.

So, I gained a lot of new impressions of the culture of Guadeloupe today.

Consuelo
Day of emotions, feelings and enjoyment, difficult to explain in words how well I have felt.
After strolling through the crust Creollo garden - heritage and multiculturalism, where Rita has explained to us each of the fruits and plants that were there, we have experienced a magical moment with Gwo ka music.
Everybody had a African drum and we were following the rhythm that the musicians marked us. Rhythm, music and dance together have made us get into the culture of the island and feel part of them. Personally, I have connected a lot with the rhythms and I have felt happy, very happy. Thank you!!!

George's creol garden that we visited today was absolutely stunning. It felt and looked like we were walking through a part of paradise. The gwo ka workshop was very interesting and for me, it was quite challenging to try and follow the rhythms. The teacher and the band were great. My first quote of the day is William's phrase: "Like in real life, it is not a problem if you are wrong, the important thing is to be aware of that and than try and find the right rhythm again." My second quote is: "Dance like no one is watching." The dancing was a very big challenge for me and I did it. Thanks everyone!

Lidia Blanco. Music in Guadalupe

Today we had the opportunity to be in a land where all kinds of typical fruits of Guadalupe are grown. There it was curious to meet Anddy, who at 7 years old has shown us how well he works in nature. It should be noted that today was his day off at school since the children only go 4 days (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday).
However, Rita kept the best part for us later: THE MUSIC, another essential part of a country's cultural heritage.
Today William, George, Jean Marie and Anddy have immersed us in their musical culture through instruments created by themselves. Through their drums we have learned 7 different rhythms whose names we are unable to write (and almost do not pronounce). We have sung, played the drums and danced as the body demanded without having to know their dances, just for the mere fact of enjoying, feeling and expressing. The emotion has been such that even a tear has been spilled with happiness. I also note a link sent to us today by Rita, the group manager, in which it is evident that rhythm is one of the bases of day to day here since ancient times.
https://youtu.be/lVPLIuBy9CY
The session has continued to share songs and dances from each country where Spanish people have hummed to the rhythm of Paquito el Chocolatero and we have danced a sevillanas. A rule: shame does not exist (although we Spanish people have not needed to be reminded). An impossible experience to live in any trip if one travels as a simple tourist. An small appreciation: This class did have walls, but not doors or windows, although we did not need to learn Guadalupanse culture and connect with it and with nature.THANKS YOU FOR HAPPY HAPPINESS.

9-string kanklés played by Rita made a fine start for the drum session.

Gwo-ka, and it´s seven rhythms: the Toumblak, the Kaladja, the Mindé, the Roulé, the Pagenbel, the Grage and the Lewoz hold us all in motion. Responsory singing like in Finnish traditional music, Kalevala and like in American black people´s folkmusic, blues. Interesting. At least in Pagenbel I could not sing with the others, I missed the rhythm. Listening the others is the most important thing in Gwo-ka; studies in music is not the point at all. Listening, improvising, answering, feeling, dancing, they are the things that matter.
