When the sun evaporates a bunch of water near the equator, the water vapor in the warmer air rises up into the sky and flows North to South. When this water vapor cools, it falls back to Earth and the falling rain pushes air down. This means that wind is caused by the air falling. The way that Earth rotates on it's axis causes the wind to blow East to West.
