I decided to volunteer at this animal shelter because I had heard that this shelter in particular, is ran by mainly volunteers. Collin County Animal Services shelters all lost/stray pets from Farmersville, Frisco and McKinney. Besides the small staff that manages the office and paperwork potion of the shelter, the shelter is worked by volunteers. The volunteers are responsible for maintaining the shelter. I spent my day at the Collin County Animal shelter cleaning empty animal kennels, keeping the animals fed, and maintaining the active animal kennels. Majority of my day was spent keeping up with the dog kennels. Every time an animal messed in their kennel, it had to immediately be cleaned. Blankets are constantly being changed out of the animal kennels and washed as well. It is the volunteers jobs to make sure all of the blankets are cleaned for the next animal. Because I don't have animals I wasn't actually prepared to deal with the smells and messes of animals. I personally always thought it would be fun to work with animals. However, after my volunteering I realized its more hard work than fun. Not only was I constantly busy with cleaning but I was emotionally drained. Seeing so many animals missing from their homes was really a sad sight. Luckily for them they ended up at this wonderful shelter were the people really care about their futures. I arrived at 7 a.m. and left at 3 p.m. Not only did I arrive after the actual supervisors but I also left before them.
