A record player, or turntable with a mixer.
Speakers with a ground wire.
Electricity.
A record. Often referred to as a plate.

Some record players are a complete system ready to plug direct into speakers.  Some systems have speakers installed already.  Others require an extra element called a mixer to communicate with the speakers in order to play the music.

If your system is fully functional with installed speakers this part will be much easier for you.  If the mixer is needed there will be a few extra steps.

This can be tricky at times if you are unfamiliar with the material you are working with.  The key is to go from the wall to the player, the player to the mixer, and from there to the speakers.  

The player needs to be plugged into a wall outlet to start.  Next you will hook up the left and right speakers and the ground wire to the system or mixer. There will be an L or an R to designate the speaker sides.  

If powered on everything should light up accordingly.

Depending on the size of your record you will be setting the player to 33 or 45 using a button near the start/stop button.
The 33 would be for a full 12 inch record and the 45 would be used for the half size.

Your record will start to play out of the speakers and you will have completed the instructions on how to set the system up to play your music.
