Trichomoniasis is an STI that is caused by a parasitic infection called Trichomonas vaginalis. It is among the most common sexual transmitted infections. People at risk for contracting this STI have multiple sexual partners and do not use condoms during sexual intercourse. Trichomoniasis requires a medical diagnosis. While women have noticeable symptoms, men usually have few to no symptoms at all. Symptoms in women include a foul-smelling discharge that is white-greyish or yellow-greenish in color, genital itching, and painful urination. Symptoms in males are limited to painful urination and occasionally discharge. Some people may also experience abdominal pain, pain during intercourse, inflammation of the cervix, vaginal inflammation, and vulval inflammation. Trichomoniasis also increases the risk for premature birth for pregnant women. Treatment for Trichomoniasis consists of both (or all if there are multiple)partners being treated with an oral antibiotic called Metronidazole, more commonly known as Flagyl. The long term effects for males is the increased risk for prostate cancer. Increased risks for women include HIV, AIDS, and cervical cancer. There is a higher risk for premature rupturing of membranes, preterm birth, and the newborn having low birth weight for pregnant women who have Trichomoniasis. There have also been evidence of respiratory complaints in newborns including periods of bradycardia, tachycardia, and apena.
