He had studied law in England, London which gave him a better knowledge of the English language. He first experienced racism on a train in South Africa, when he was riding in first class and was forced to downgrade because of his color. He started out a very shy man, but proceeded to become a man of very strong opinions. 
People would come from all over India to hear Gandhi speak.
