This was going to be a good year for Pacy. As the year went on Pacy was on the search to find the things she was looking for. Pacy looked for her talent, she struggled with disappointment. She did indeed meet her best friend this year. Throughout this year Pacy soon discovers that the Year of the Dog will be a lucky one after all.
Teaching Idea: I think a craft idea would be a great idea for this book. There were many illustrations in the book and I think a craft would be a good way to tie it back to the book. Will have the student create special decorations for around the room. The signs can say Chinese New Year or the Year of the Dog. The students will use read, black, and gold construction paper to make the posters. Each student will be able be creative with this and make each poster different.

The video takes you through what could be a typical day for a student with dyslexia. This video is funny, but informative.
Teaching Idea: I think it is important for the students to have background information on dyslexia before we start reading all of these books. For this activity I would want the students to write down the main things that a student with dyslexia might struggle with in school and in everyday life. Their are radio shows you can listen to and articles you can read. All of the stories are different and unique to people. It is a great way to hear people's stories and experiences.
Teaching Idea: I will each student pick a story that interests them. They will read or listen to the story. They will then write a response paper on the story they listen or read. The response paper will include many questions about how the story. I would have the whole class sit in a circle, so the students could face each other. Then I would ask the students a series of question. An example of a question I would ask is At the beginning of the novel, Standish observes that “what ifs are as boundless as the stars” (p. 1). What is the historical “what if” that puts the plot of Maggot Moon into motion? When is this novel set? Where is it set? I then would start at one side of the circle and work around the circle having everyone participate and add something to the discussion. When he learns he often becomes confused or frustrated. On the first day of school Brian's new teacher recognizes his problem. His friends believe that he is just being silly. He was reversing letters when writing his name. Brian went through a series of test determining that he has dyslexia. Soon after this Brian's parents took him to a support program at home and at school to help him improve his skills. Brian wants to prove to his family and friends that he is not dumb. His dyslexia made him a stronger human being.
Teaching Idea: For this teaching idea I want the students to really focus on something that makes them strong. This whole book is about how Brian overcame his struggles. I want the students to be able to focus on the things they are good at, so they can relate to the character in the book. After they right things they are good at I want them to talk with a partner and share what they put down. With that same partner they will also go over a few questions about the character Brian. I will have questions like what was the hardest thing Brain had to overcome? What were his strengths and what were his struggles? How did people around him help him overcome those struggles? How did they not help him? The students will answer those questions together and then we will talk as a class about the partners answers.

By: Diane Burton Robb
Illustrations: Gail Piazza
Published: 2004
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Text Level: P-3rd Grade
Teaser: When Adam started kindergarten, the teachers wanted him to learn about the letters in the alphabet. But the letter did not look normal to Adam. His "p" looked like a "q" and his "b" looked like a "d." Adam was always more into coloring or playing with clay. In first grade Adam's teacher wanted him to start putting letters into words so he could finally read. That was the beginning of the alphabet war for Adam.
Teaching Idea: This book is for younger students, so I really want to make the activity fun for them. The teaching idea I had for this book was to let the students play with play-doh. I would first have them make something that they loved with the play-doh. Once they have created something that they believe to be very special I would have them get with a partner and share what they have made and explain to them why it is special to them. After this I would have the partners share with the whole class what their partners made with their play-doh and why it is so special to them.

Teaser: This is a website where you can find poem, after poem about dyslexia. The poems are unique and special to the authors who wrote them.
Teaching Idea: I would first have the students pick a poem from this website. Once they have found a poem that interested them, I would have them analyze it and figure out what the authors message is from the poem. After that I would have them share with a partner what they have discovered from their poems. I would like the students to then write their own short poems about something that interests them. It does not have to be about dyslexia. I want to give them a lot of freedom with what their topics are. Once the poems are written they will share them with their partners.

Teaser: This is a survey that allows students to see if they think they could have dyslexia. The survey asks a series of questions that relate to dyslexia. The website has the possibility to determine if you have dyslexia. It is not always correct put gives you an interesting answer.
Teaching Idea: For this activity the student will start off by taking the survey. Once they have taking the survey and write down their answers in a notebook. First the students will answer questions from a worksheet that I put together about the survey. Then I want the students to compare their answer with a partner and explain to them why they think they got their answer. Then if they feel comfortable they can share their answers. After that we will go over the worksheet as a class. I will go around the classroom and have students answer the questions.

Teaser: This website goes over different way to treat the dyslexia. This can be done in multiple ways and this website explains those different ways.
Teaching Idea: I will have the students pick one of the treatments for dyslexia and do research on the topic. The students can either work in partners or by themselves. They will then write important facts about the treatment and what the treatment is on a poster. Once the student's posters are done they will present them to the class. I will expect the students to take notes about the different treatments that the other students researched. I think by doing this it will give the student background knowledge aboutwhat student with dyslexia goes through to overcome their dyslexia.
