  • To show how Jack still wants to become the leader of the tribe, although he tries to hide it; along with how the other boys, while recognizing Ralph as their leader, only seem to listen to Jack. This shows how there is an undertone of rivalry between Jack and Ralph

Purpose/ Conclusion: This raises the question that perhaps the story may have changed if Piggy was shown the equal amount of respect that Jack and Ralph had.

  • To show how fear shifts the balance of civilization and chaos, and how this shift causes Ralph's control over the tribe to diminish. As this control comes to an end Jack becomes the new leader, who is less civil than Ralph.

  • Jack's "throne" versus the conch
    • Under the reign of the conch shell, the boys were treated as equals and were given the chance to voice their opinions, but under Jack's reign the boys are treated as servants and ordered around as such.
  • Further betrayal
    • Even after seeing how Jack mistreats his servants members from Ralph's group still leave and join Jack
  • Mistaken identity
    • Simon, after discovering the corpse he realizes that there are no monsters on the island, except for the boys; he attempted to tell the tribes about the news but he was mistaken as the beast and was brutally killed by them
Purpose/Conclusion:
  • To show the contrast in Jack's and Ralph's leadership, as well as showing how little the boys now trust Ralph's leadership, hence joining Jack even though he is cruel. This also shows how savage the boys have become while being deserted on the island, when Simon came out of the woods the boys immediately attempted to kill him, they barely put thought into their actions.

Purpose/Conclusion: With the story started to near the end, there is a sense of uncertainty with leadership that leads to the divide of the two groups combined with the uncertainty of being rescued.

Talking Points:
  • Immediate violence
    • When met with the guards Ralph's group is immediately assaulted with rocks thrown by the guards, and again once Jack's hunting team returns Jack immediately tries to attack Ralph.
  • The conch's lost importance
    • As the island is in chaos, order doesn't matter, therefore making the conch lose all importance; this is shown in how Jack's tribe is unfazed when they look at the conch that once brought them together
  • Another meaningless death
    • Roger loosens a boulder than falls down and hits Piggy, crushing him and the conch, this signifies the loss of intelligence and careful thinking on the island, along with the total destruction of order with the conch 
Purpose/Conclusion:
  • To further show how under Jack's rule there are no repercussion for violence and even the killing of fellow islanders and how this is not a story about a utopia, but the down fall of one and the implementation of a dystopia. There is also importance that Roger was the one who killed Piggy, Roger, who is the most savage and the least civilized killing Piggy, the seemingly most civilized and least savage of those on the island.
