Response to Walt Whitman's 'O Me! O Life!'

After watching Dead Poets’ Society , the poem O Me! O Life! by Walt Whitman beholds a deeper meaning after watching the movie. Walt Whitman’s intended meaning through the poem in relation to the movie, is that there are people all around us living to be something they’re not. They all desire to be on the top and better than others based on society and interests of others, but fail to recognize what we, as individuals, want. Our life is like a play, with many scenes and actions, and at some point we must “contribute a verse”. If we never take apart in our needs in our life, we will be living a sad a depressed life, hiding our true self in the shadows of our fake self. Personally, it makes me reflect upon future life decisions, questioning if it is truly something I want, and truly something that would make me happy.

I declare to myself, that I will contribute to our world happiness, relief, and aid to all the good people. I've lived life so far at the greatest I could imagine, and I would want to give back to our world, mainly to the people of our world, the same feeling. The feeling of genuine happiness with your life, not a happiness based on social status or money. The happiness that if you are struggling through something that might put you down in life, I would be there to aid. This reflects on my desire to be involved somehow through the medical field, for I would enjoy bringing that support and aid on helping others build upon advancing their life. Although not being able to target everyone in the world (which is impossible), just the knowledge that i've somehow helped others, even one, would contribute to that earnest desire to help the people of this world.

Challenges of living transcendental

Living a transcendental life based upon transcendental tenets in our modern day society is difficult, due to the amount of technology we have developed. We develop technology to keep people entertained and indoors for a good amount of time, making them neglect the natural beauty and entertainment of the outdoors.

As we live in the modern twenty first century, technology has never been at its greatest height until our present time. There are so many technology aspects that keep most people indoors such as a television, XBOX, iPhones, laptops (etc.) that make people stray from the original entertainment, nature. We adapt so much to technology, we begin to neglect nature which was what individuals were dependent upon a majority amount of the time, other than the few twenty years of technological advancements. Yet, also with the development of technology developed social strains and expectations. Technology is not cheap, which rolls in the concept of fulfilling society standards based upon wealth. People focus so much on purchasing these techs and living up to standards of our modern society, making it harder than ever to live out the tenets of transcendentalism.

Living a transcendental life within our modern day society is a challenging aspect. It’s challenging due to the significant jump with technological advancements and standards of society. People feel the need to conform to these standards and keep up to date with the latest tech, that they fail to recall what life was before all these things. Before all these standards and technology, for the most part American civilization was based upon nature, and appreciated nature much more than current modern times.
