February 4th-11th, 1945 Yalta Conference, Soviet Union

The Yalta Conference was a very important meeting in 1945 towards the end of World War II. Many powerful leaders including Stalin, Roosevelt, and Churchill met on how they wanted to treat Germany after the war.

June 25th, 1945 United Nations is Created.

The United Nations was made in 1945 after WWII to stop future conflict. 50 different countries sent representatives met in San Francisco to draft the UN Charter. They ended up starting in October of 1945.

July 17th, 1945 Potsdam Conference

The Potsdam Conference was held in July 1945 in the country of Berlin. The leaders who were in this conference included Truman, Stalin, and Churchill. The main topic of this meeting was to demilitarize Germany.

July 16th, 1945 Atomic Bomb Tested

This was a huge step in Politics and Warfare. It created a new meaning in Nuclear Warfare. These testings were often done in New Mexico. These testings also led to the bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki.

August 6th-9th, 1945 The Bombing of Nagasaki

This bombing was a very severe event in WWII. This is when the United States dropped an Atomic Bomb called the "Fat Man" on Nagasaki, Japan. This bomb caused tons of destruction and loss of life. This was one event that led Japan to surrender from the war.

March 5th, 1946 Winston Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech

This speech was given so that Churchill could warn everyone about the Soviets domination over Eastern Europe after WWII.

He asked everyone for a defensive alliance to fight the Soviets Influence. This speech happened at the start of the Cold War.

March 12th, 1947 Truman Doctrine

This doctrine was made to help with two things: economic and military aid for those countries that have been targeted by the Soviets. This showed America's view on ending communism. This was America's Foreign Policy during the Cold War.

April 3rd, 1948 The Marshall Plan

The Marshall Plan was made to help the Western Europe Countries economically after WWII. The US made this to target communism and to make sure it doesn't spread. The Marshall Plan doesn't allow countries who support communism to have major influence over the countries hurt after the war.

June 24th - May 12th 1949 Berlin Blockade

The Berlin Blockade was a move by the Soviets to remove all access to Germany from West Berlin. This was bad for Berlin cause they lost access to land, water, and rail roads. The United States helped by creating the Berlin Airlift as pictured. The Berlin Airlift was able to provide supplies to West Berlin.

October 1st 1949 Communist Revolution in China

The revolution was that on October 1st the PRC or the People's Republic of China was created. The PRC was led by Mao Zedong and he was the first to have Communist rule over China.

April 4th 1949 NATO

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was made for a defensive alliance within Western Europe and North American Countries. The main view point of NATO was that nobody liked the Soviets. NATO is still an organization today.

June 25th 1950 - July 27th 1953 Korean War

This was a war between North and South Korea both having their own alliances. North Korea invaded South Korea this war caused a lot of death. The war ended in stalemate which means no one won.

November 1st 1952 Hydrogen Bomb

The hydrogen bomb was a very powerful nuclear weapon that released a huge amount of energy once exploded. It has never been used in battle but only tested.

September 8th, 1954 SEATO

The Southeast Asia Treaty Organization was formed to defend against communism in Southeast Asia. It supported the US by its efforts to contain communism.

May 14th 1955 Warsaw Pact

The Warsaw Pact was a military alliance made by the Soviet Union and a couple other Eastern European Countries. This was a complete counter to the formation of NATO.

October 4th 1957 Sputnik

Sputnik was not only an artificial satellite but it was the first one ever launched. It was launched in 1957 by the Soviet Union. This was the first real venture into space by any country.

April 17th - April 20th 1961 Bay of Pigs

The Bay of Pigs was a failed attempt to invade Cuba by the CIA. They did this to try and overthrow Fidel Castro's Communist Government. This event was very embarrassing for the US.

August 13th 1961 Berlin Wall Built

The Berlin Wall was created by the German Democratic Republic to stop immigration into Berlin. It was a symbol of division in the Cold War.

1961-1975 Vietnam War

This war was started between North & South Vietnam each supported by different countries. It ended up being bad for the US and the war had lots of loss of life. Like the Korean War there was no clear winner.

October 16th - 29th 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis

When the US and Soviet Union came very close to starting a nuclear war. Because of when they found the Soviet missiles in Cuba. This resulted in missiles getting removed from both Cuba & Turkey.
