Snowball Fight (Hudson)
it is awesome for getting to know you interview activity. Use two colored pieces of paper when you run off the questions so that it is easy to pair the students up to interview each other.

Use for review for figures of speech. Make copies of paper that has a figure of speech on it. Ball up all the paper. Students throw the snowballs at each other. (Music playing) when music stops students grab a pice of paper form groups. Which ever figure of speech is on the paper students give an example from story or poem that is being read.

I had the students think about the theme or a universal statement the poem "Because I Could Not Stop For Death" was trying to make. They needed to jot down simple hastags (thematic concepts) on their paper such as #death. They got with a partner and combined hastags. They then got with their table group and created a thematic statement.

We use journal prompts to get us to think deeply. On Fridays we meet as groups to discuss our findings. As the students share they decide was the author was saying using quotes from the text and a guide. As they think deeper, they may even disagree. After we meet, they return to their journals to jot down any changes in thinking.
