Chroma key is the use of special effects/green/blue screens to make it look like a person is in a location, when they're actually in a studio. Most times, it does not look genuine and it makes the music video look amateur, unless that was what they were going for. When they do execute chroma key right, it is in high budgeted music videos or feature length films.

One thing that makes a music video great is the camera techniques that you can do. For instance a POV technique in the music video Smack My Bitch Up by The Prodigy. Dolly shots are cameras that run smoothly along a track, an example of this being used is in Blackout Band - Video Games.

A lot of music videos use a still camera technique and they cut to other angles, and when they do pan over to something else, it is done smoothly, and not with free-hand. Some camera movements use a panning shot, where the camera will stay in place and follow the focused target. Music videos are largely focused on the artist-performers, so you will see a number of closeups of the actual singer, singing the song. You normally see this because they want to show how the singer is feeling in the music video. For example, in happy music videos, you see close up the singers bubbly and energetic which they want to convey to the audience. But if the music video has a negative undertone to it, they will show the singer sad and looking negative. An example is Marliyn Manson - Running To The Edge Of The World, which feautres close up shots, smooth camera work and even features free-hand shots,

Muti-image is the edit that can use multiple shots into one shot. Queens Of The Stone Age - In My Head uses hundreds of images to make portrait shots in their music video. Although, I think they overused the feature, along with the colour effects. Although it made the music video decent in some respects.

Miming and lip syncing is used to give the illusion that the artist or performer, is singing the song as the video is going on. Some music videos demonstrate this very well, whilst others do not. Some just make the mouth movements and make the music video look un-genuine and fake. So the best solution, is to actually sing the song, to make it look authentic. An example of one that does it well is System Of A Down - Chop Suey, because they are performing to a live crowd and using genuine instruments/microphones to sing along with the song.

Effects in a music video are made to make the video look more enticing to the viewer, so they do not turn it off. A particular one I enjoyed with effects is Lightspeed Champion - Marlene. In a few shots, there is this particular part that i enjoyed; where the use of colourful and surrealist editing effects were used, which looked so beautiful and accommodated to the music video so much better. It even uses effects and transitioning to a particular part of the song, which you can see in the thumbnail.

Some music videos often make cuts to fit the beat of the music video. This gives it an effect that emphasises the beat and makes you bob and weave your head along with the beat. An example of this is Pharrell Williams - Happy, when a certain note is played on the drums, the shot cuts to another person miming the song.

They have the props, the special effects and they even included the dwarf Oompa Loompas as part of the music video. The lead singer is appropriately dressed as Willy Wonka. The music video is set in one particular scene in the film, it is when they go through the tunnel on the Wonka boat, and go through the horrorible part of the tunnel.

This music video is from the film Forgetting Sarah Marshall by the fictional band Infant Sorrow. The title of this music video is 'We've Got To Do Something' which addresses things like current issues, ethics etc. As well as conveying this message within the song, he holds up signs in the video that make statements like 'How can you read when you are blind' 'believe everything' 'fight back against violence' 'don't consume' 'buy green' 'Get angry!' 'Feed the poor' 'False Untruths Kill' 'Be a citizen of the earth!' and 'hate' which he rips apart. He is referencing all of the bad things going on in the world with the signs, and on the street he implores them to 'do something'.

The name is also a pun of high school and college football team anthems, also featuring a football game in the music video. The song is also in repsonse to the columbine tragedy, and how America glorifies violence, and using football as the most violent sport in America and their obsession with war.

interpretation of the song

This song is Clint Eastwood by Gorillaz, an animated band. At first glance, you cannot tell what the song is about. But when you look into the story of Gorillaz or read the actualy lyrics, you will understand. Take for example 'I ain't happy,I'm feeling glad I got sunshine in a bag I'm useless but not for long the future is coming on' When I read those lyrics, I think they are singing about drugs. Because of terms like 'sunshine in a bag' or 'I'm useless but not for long the future is coming on' which is coming down from being high, and you feel down about yourself.

When you watch the actual video itself, you see the drummer has some sort of supernatural person coming out of him. You wouldn't know this at first, but it's the spirit of his dead friend that died in a drive-by shooting. When I first watched this music video, I thought that it was his personality, as the drummer is the quiet character in the band. The spirit even sings that he has been let out and he even raps the lyric 'spiritual'Hero who appears in you to clear your view when you're too crazy. Which I think is a reference to a deity.

Music videos like to help companies with product placement, some music videos parody adverts, and some adverts parody music videos. An example of this is, is the use of the song Queen - We Will Rock You. Without this song being made, this advert would have not been made; because it would have not influenced the advertisers to make this. Pepsi often uses alot of musical acts in their adverts. Another example is using Michael Jackson in multiple adverts. One even caused Michael to have his hair engulfed in flames. Others included multiple adverts that were chronological put out to tell a short narrative, of him escaping the press.

A homage in a music video, is usually dedicated to someone or something. For this example, I used Michael Jackson - Hold My Hand ft. Akon. The reason why I chose this, was because this is a music video that was made a year after Michael Jacksons death. In the video, you see Michael Jacksons fans setting off balloons and saying that they love Michael, as a tribute to him. You can also see his fans performing some of the dances and include clips of Michael. Another key factor, is that in one shot, you can see a person crying. To me, that represents the turmoil of his fans at the fact that he is dead.

Another style of a music video is a parody. These are particularly popular on the internet, and made by a single director. Professional parodies include parodies of adverts. The Foo Fighters have already parodied a mentos advert. The song is Big Me, and it even expands upon the 30 second ad, and it compiles at least two parody adverts.

A surreal music video is usually described as strange and you cannot believe that it exists. This relates to the DyE - Fantasy and The Horrors - Changing The Rain, but I will provide another example. In my opinion, an example of a surreal music video is Lightspeed Champion - Galaxy Of The Lost. A four minute music video, released in 2007. It is surreal due to to the characters, the opening scene and the randomness in the music video. The first shot in this music video, is of the artist singing to a kitten, then a puppet monster hand a guitar to him.

That having been said, the music itself is pretty good, compared to what's on the charts.

Surrealist music videos can fit into other styles of music videos, so this video may be trying to tell a narrative, open to interpretation, but I just don't see it that way.

A musical act could use impressionism to represent different themes. An example of one of these impressionist music videos is Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani California. In the music video, they use impressionism to almost parody the evolution of music. At first you see them in a 50's style black and white act, to punk rock themes, to metal themes and then at the end of the music video, they are themselves. What this means is that they are the present representation of rock and roll.

This could also fit into parodies, but it is parodying themes and mashing them all together.

Some music videos like to tell stories. For instance, Green Day's: Wake Me Up When September Ends, is about a couple that at first happy and content with their lives, until the male in the relationship, decides to enlist in the military.

The video itself has an anti-war theme to it and it shows tragedy when you see the boyfriend ambushed by the insurgents, which is then cut to the girlfriend sitting on a stand next to a field, looking up at the sky.

Some music videos have a clear narrative and want to tell a story, sometimes the story is open to interpretation and with some music videos with a narrative, you really have to pay attention to what is going on.

I would describe it as abstract, colourful and surreal. There are many styles of animation. There is 2D animation, 3D animation, claymation and I think stop-motion would fit in the animation category.

An example of this is There'll Always Be an England, which is footage of a Sex Pistols reunion concert in 2007. The purpose of this was to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of the album: Never Mind The Bollocks, released on the 27th of October, in the year 1977.

There was also supposed to be a live DVD of Michael Jackson's 2009 tour: This Is It, before his premature death, the tour never took place.

As well as live footage on these DVD's, there are extras and behined the scenes which add to the value of the DVD's. Sometimes hours of interviews and maybe even never before seen footage from years ago.

Music videos have many technical aspects that are assigned to a few specific people in their job roles. One of which is editing. Many aspects of editing for music videos is syncing video with audio. Usually music videos are shot at different angles with the lip syncers playing verses of the song seperately for certain scenes and the entire music video is shot at one angle. When the song is finished from one angle, they move to another angle and play the song again. However if you are lucky, you can have multiple camera shots to gain most of the action in one take and edit between each verse/chorus etc.

When editing, I used techniques such as side-by-side editing, and what I did was use footage of the same actor doing two completely different things with the camera still and I cropped the footage together to make it look like they are in the same scene. However, the lighting looked entirely different. What I did to combat this was play around with the lighting tool to try and make the two shots look like they were shot at the same time, as the video was shot outside.

There are also cut-in shots that show part of a person in the shot, there are point-of-view shots and if the music video is trying to tell a narrative, you will get over the shoulder shots and the 180 degree rule.

The fashion industry capitalises on the music industry, by giving artists the latest designer clothing and you see these artists wear them in their music videos, at their live performances and in public. They make deals with the record companies to get them to wear this gear. Young people see that these universally popular artists and musicians wearing these clothes and they think that you have to wear these clothes in order stay in the mainstream crowd. For instance, I have noticed that in the song 'These Hoes Aint Loyal' Chris Brown wears these steel toe boots, skinny jeans, a large t-shirt with a small, fake leather jacket and with a flannel shirt tied around his waist at the back. After a few months when the music video was released on VEVO YouTube, the video had gained nearly 140,000,000 views and I have seen a number of young males wear the same style of clothing from the video. The same can be said for snapbacks, that many artists have worn since the early 2010's and have become ever popular due to many mainstream artists wearing them.

40's: Most music predecessing the 1940's was mostly composed by classical artists. With inspirations from classical composers like Mozart. The 40'son the other hand was becoming more upbeat and relaxed. Jazz and Blues was played using drum kits, saxophones, double bass and guitars. Quite recently, there has been a rebirth of jazz and blues with the use of these songs in video games. The franchise fallout is a game that's set in the future, with a 1950's theme to the setting of the game. In the game, there is a radio built in when you are playing and it features jazz and blues music. Artists like The Ink Spots now have a bigger following due to the games soundtrack. It was soft, smooth and relaxing to listen to; whilst killing radioactive beasts.

50's: Music started to take a more aggressive approach in the 1950's with artists like Johnny Cash playing to hardened inmates at San Quentin prison. Rock and Roll was hard; compared to past music and it was very well structured. That's why Elvis Presley is the best-selling artists of all time.

60's: With the hippy movement, the rock and roll scene took a more eastern and psychedelic approach to music. Using instruments like Indian sitars to make music. Even The Beatles used it, along with bands like The Lemon Pipers. It had a unique, relaxed sound that is commonly associated with drugs like LSD.

70's: Alot of kids were sick of fashion trends like flares, and the swinging sixties were dead. Punk wanted to be the last vestige of rock and roll. So they made a very aggressive sound to put out to the working class youth of its time. Punk was about being against government, and that they have had enough of being persecuted. Although the music itself wasn't well structured, and you really didn't have to have intermediate music skill to play the genre. It was bout a group of people, gathering together, and sharing ideas.

80's: Metal music was the pinnacle of violent music. Although it was alot more well structured, and the guitar solo's were amazing, and the drums were pounding with lightning speed. Many saw it as a threat to society, but it was just music that sung about hate, anarchy and violence.

90's: 90's music saw the rise of R&B, and it was mindless and vapid. Boybands were starting to pour in. Nsync, 98 Degrees and The Backstreet Boys grew very popular, but then faded intro obscurity in the early 2000's. Although pop-punk was growing; with bands like Green Day, Sum 41 and Blink 182 signing with major record labels and achieving global success.

The artists image

The artist has to rely on their public image inside as well as outside of their musical performance and skill in order to garner more sales. A good example of this, is the stage antics, as well as real life drama that gets caught on by the press. The Sex Pistols were known for having a notorious image in the late 1970's. Their bassist Sid Vicious; severely lacked in musical talent and so the band relied on his image to gather a bigger following. Sid was known for his publicsied heroin addiction, which would eventually be his end and his out of control relationship with Nancy Laura Spungen, which he would later be accused of murdering. He was also known to be energetic and violent at his live performances, he once blinded a woman in one eye with a bottle. His manager: Malcom McLaren described him as the attitude of punk.

40's: In the 1940's, the whole world was fighting the war up to 1945, and the public needed its entertainment to get their minds off of the horrors of war. Frank Sinatra then bursted onto the music scene and began shaping the face of traditional pop music of its time. As a successful Italian-American, he was often associated with the notorious Italian mafia. Recently out of prohibition which made Al Capone well known, many people had theories that he had the power to murder anyone he pleased with their help. Sinatra was also part of this group called 'The Rat Pack' and that consisted of himself, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr. You see Sammy Davis was known to be a member of The Church of Satan in the late 60's, and of course Sinatra was associated with that too, as his bandmate Sammy was a member.

50's: In the 1950's, the emergance of Rock and Roll was bustling. Many new artists swept on to the scene and sexual perversion was becoming part of music. Elvis Presely was one of these artists to do so. At a show, he had some funky new dance moves, and on one occasion, a local judge threatened to prosecute him if he jirrated his hips. In modern times, he is considered a cultural icon, and back then he was considered a controversial, notorious rock and roller who got into his fair share of scuffles which affected his public image.

60's: Music had evolved beyond old fashioned Rock and Roll, with artists like Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochran. The Beatles were the biggest thing in the 1960's. From1960 - 1970, The Beatles dominated mainstream music scene with many chart topping songs and albums. Many young girls would go crazy for the band and in the later stages of their career, they were seen as drugged up hippies. They had no doubt taken drugs, but with music videos like 'I Am the Walrus' you wouldn't be surprised that so many people labeled them as crazy drug takers, and there even was a story that they had light up at Buckingham Palace.

(Done the 70'sin my first paragraph)

80's: The 1980's was known for the growing poplularity of the heavy metal genre. Most heavy metal bands started in the late 1970's, but gained success in the 80's; due to the punk scene dwindling. The kids needed a new music genre to take out their anger and frustration with, and heavy metal was the IN thing. Many conservative voices had forsaken the genre and labelled anyone who listened to it, as devil worshippers and violent junkie yobs. I suppose songs with names like 'The Number of the Beast' helped with their publicity.

90's: The 90's had many new musical acts. This includes the emergance of boy-bands, the euro house music scene and the most iconic was Grunge. Inspired by metal, punk and hardcore, Nirvana came onto the scene with 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' which is considered an anthem for an entire generation. Although the band itself was spiralling out of control with drug addiction, depression and suicide. Nowadays, it is parodied as a depressive subculture, but Cobain is still considered a legend amongst followers of teen angst.

An example of this is the song 'Wiggle' by Jason Derulo. He has lyrics that says 'I can make you famous on Instagram' which in itself is promoting the use of his social media, because they now know that the artist has Instagram.

Musc videos last long in the charts by the quality of the music video. Whether by generating controversy, or just being amazing to watch. Ofcourse the song is taken into account as well. A lot of news stations and talk shows talk about these artists and advertises their music videos on their shows as well as using the artist as a guest. One example of this is Marilyn Manson who uses shock value in his videos in order to make a memorable music video that people love to watch. The song Sweet Dreams used by Marilyn Manson as a cover also extends the income for the original artists, the eurythmics.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeMFqkcPYcg

In music videos, there can be hidden meanings behind them. Like anti-war, anti-poverty and even anti-government etc etc. For instance the song Anarchy in the UK by The Sex Pistols is obviously a political song about how they advocate anarchism and are anti-government. The reason they are anti-government is because their background is working class, where they had to live on rough estates which were made by the government. Britain was in economic turmoil after the war and they were still facing that with power cuts and the rubbish strike. So this band wrote songs that reflected these events in their lives.

Promoting a product in a music video such as clothing, food or like a television show or film.

In this music video, the first shot of Avril Lavigne is playing her acoustic guitar and then her phone rings and she says "Oh! My Sony phone is ringing!" Then she takes the phone out of a glass of water. So she is promoting the Sony brand, as she is signed to Epic Records, which is a division of Sony's Music Entertainment division. Also, she showed that the phone was capable of being waterproof, she did this because the producers and director wanted to show the viewer that the phone was capable of being used after being dunked into water.

Artists image: The artist is presented as a young and innocent young girl. Although there is a bit of cleavage, she is dressed quite formally and conservatively.

Music itself: The music is classically composed by a professional orchestra. Although there is no conductor. The lyrics are emotionally vapid and shallow, with its theme of love.

Fashion trends: Judy Garlands current dress that she is wearing wouldn't have influenced the way fashion was looked at, women have been wearing these types of dresses for special occasions, like a family gathering or a dinner party. But not as formal wear.

Quality of the footage: Looking at the footage, you can tell that it is shot on a high quality camera for its time. Although the footage could have been digitally re-mastered.

Shot types: The shots are not creative and flowing. The only shots they use is a short longshot, and a few mid view shots of Garland and the onlookers. Maybe a close-up shot here and there, but nothing adventurous.

Effects: As far as i can tell, there is not any effects used in this video, because they wouldn't have had the film technology to pull off anything spectacular.

Editing: Just normal cuts, nothing fancy.

On stage, he would be experiencing heroin withdrawal symptoms and would be falling down, sweating and all around being incomprehensible. It even sets the scene with an edit from Coronation Street. It's kept to a consistent standard to keep the audience interest

They have an effect where the person running is stopped mid-running, whilst the background image still moves.

Editing: The editing is well done, and is kept consistent with the chase, and following the pursers. mid-trhough it cuts to a random man who happens to be in that place, which in my guest is the artist. As the years have gone by, editing and effects has greatly improved with technology.

Music conventions in Hip Hop videos

This is Big Poppa by The Notorious B.I.G. from the 1990's and is considered a legend in the Hip Hop genre and gangster rap.

Looking at this music video in a minute, I see it takes a different approach to all the other music videos. This videos setting is set in a club, with smooth club lighting. Not obnoxiously colourful with over the top lighting effects, but just light red effects with the occasional effect. But there are other shots where there is no club lighting effects and don't focus on BIG, but on one of the co-stars featured in the song. The editing does not tend to cut a lot, instead it uses smooth transitions that just fade in to the next shot. The camera movements are very smooth and most likely using some for of tracks and equipment to give the camera the smooth tilts and panning that goes on in the video. The camera shots vary from high up shots of the crowd from a mid-long shot, to mid shots of action going on in the club, but not too many long shots I noticed.

Looking at the costumes in this music video, the way the people are dressed seems mafia boss/wealthy. I think this is because of the lyrics of the song and the title 'Big Poppa' which could be considered a name for a mob boss. Along with the costumes, the biggest props used is alcoholic beverages and money. You can see that almost every actor has a drink in their hand, which gives this music video a smooth party feeling to it. You can see that they are having a good time with the music playing in the background (when you see the crowd mouthing the words) and it makes the audience want to sing along, which fits into mise-en-scene because of the arrangement of the performers and the props they have.

In the music video, you see a narrative love/romantic narrative between the lead singer, and the woman. The first thing I have noticed in this music video is the absence of adventurous camera angle and camera movement. You do see slit tilts and pans, and even a dolly along with zoom. The editing itself does have a uniqueness to it. For example, the lighting is changed at a certain time, when the woman approaches the lead singer on the edge of the bed, and when he looks over, she disappears. Which if you think about it, gives the effect of the lead singer losing a loved one, which makes you sympathise with the lead singers character, which fits in to symbolic techniques, colour, lighting and maybe mise-en-scene.

The editing is smooth I would say, what i mean is that it doesn't bombard you with seizure inducing lighting effects or multiple things going on at the same time. You only want to see the band and how the story develops between the lead singer and the girl. The costumes are mainly the bands normal attire, maybe a bit smart for the occasion, but what stood out to me is how the girl dresses. Because she wears rather revealing clothing, and you can see her just coming out of the shower, vulnerable, sexy and smoothly.

Chris Brown - Loyal ft. Lil Wayne and Tyga.

Looking at the canera angles, we are the ones that look up to the artists for most of the video. This implies that they have a sense of power and that they are superior. I say this because the subject of the song is about women not being 'Loyal' so they want to display their dominance to women that they must be loyal, like a dog is loyal to its owner.

The camera movements in the music video (particularly the dancing sequences) use a vast array of equipment to get the appropriate movements. They use trucks, dollies and they use a special piece of equipment called a boom. A camera on an arm that can be fixed on a point, which they use in the dance sequences when they get a shot above Chris Brown and the dancers.

This music video features a variety of shots that are commonly used in the video. They use medium close ups, Long shots, medium shots, medium long shots and close up shots. But they surprisingly don't use cut-ins, extreme long shots or weather shots.

The music video has a wide use of mise-en-scene with multiple performers and dancer to keep the music video interesting, as well as using a boombox as a prop. In terms lighting, it can be quiet dark with soft lights on the group and uses neon lights in the background set for decoration and adds the whole hollywood bright lights/vegas theme.

Edits in this music video are kept fresh and consistent throughout this music video, and always use different shots and angles. The shots mainly cut every 4-6 seconds throughout the song. The sound uses non-diegetic sounds, as part of the music video. With alot of produced music made from programs like FL studio and synthesisers. The colours of the music video are bright in the background and with the clothes that they wear, but the foreground lighting is not so bright. I think that's because they wanted a theme of going out on the town in the evening, so their background illuminates them with a soft light behind the character.
