Realist narrative is realistic events/characters such as the
Wii advert. Its shows a couple to start off with playing on the Wii games and then more family members/friends come and join in.
This is a good example of a realist narrative advert because people would be able to relate, there are a number of different games that can appeal to all ages and gender so no one would feel left out.
However this does not appeal to individuals as it wouldn't necessarily be fun by your self, also to families that don't like these type of activities.
The camera angle is good because it shows both the game play and how much fun the family are having and it seems quite natural as it is set in a living room and has quite natural lighting.
Other examples of realist narrative adverts are McDonalds this is effective because it relates to all ages of people.

Anti-realist narrative is animated and humorous, it has a lot of freedom and is NOT realistic. It includes things such as special effects and CGI, E.G Three pony advert, which shows a pony that starts to dance around a country side.
This is a good example of an anti-realist advert because it is light hearted and fun and makes you remember the advert and tell your friends. There could also be a hidden message as it is set in a unknown location that seems like they wouldn't get signal implying that if you were with three you would.
However the advert doesn't have a direct link to the product/service so the audience might get confused as it is hard to follow and doesn't show what they are promoting until the end of the advert.
The music fits in well with the advert because it is fun, light hearted and upbeat just like the advert is supposed to be.
Other examples of anti-realist narrative adverts are compare the meerkat, this is a good anti-realist narrative advert because its a story and you want to know ow it ends.

Talking heads is different people speaking directly to the camera about the product or service they are trying to sell, E.G California advert.
This is a good example because they're multiple people including some celebrities talking about the place. They come across very happy with different viewpoints of California and what you could do while you are there. The clips are very short and quick so it keeps your attention and the shots are of different places that could appeal to different ages.
However there is a lot of information you have to keep up with in a short amount of time which may confuse people.
The shots fit well with the advert because it shows a range of locations that you can visit that are real and appealing, they show quick short shots that are able to keep your attention.
Other examples of talking heads advert is the we buy any car advert as they have multiple people talking to the camera.

Stand Alone adverts are just ONE person talking directly to the camera trying to sell you something. Celebrities are usually used as they have a large following and their fans might by the product, E.G L'Oreal advert ft Cheryl Cole.
They have informed the audience about the product by using quick engaging sentences of how it can help. Also they have used the colours white and red as the product packaging is red and when you think about these colours it will remind you of this product.
However this advert only appeals to women so if men wanted to use it they might feel that they can't because it is targeted towards women.
The music is very fitting to the advert as it is upbeat implying that by using this product that is what your hair is going to be like.
Other examples of stand alone adverts are Ryan Reynolds in a BT advert this is a good way of advertising because people look up to him and if they see him using it they might buy it.

Parody and dramatic makes fun of either themselves or other narratives which can be over the top, for example the specsavers advert which is making fun of the lynx advert.
The specsavers advert is humorous and rememberable because of the surprise at the end. As the audience you are not expecting it to advertise glasses, you think they are going to advertise a type of body spray, which can confuse people as the context of the advert is unclear.
The shots they use are very interesting as they are showing women in a stereotypical type of way, with shopping bags, make-up and not wanting to step into a puddle. Some people might not understand this is a parody advert and take offence, making people not want to buy their product.
A dramatic advert could also be one which shows the impact that cigarettes, alcohol and drugs can have on people and is very serious and scary rather than a joke.
This is a good type of dramatic advert as it gets in touch with your emotions and makes you think about how these things are/can impact you life, for example 'Mistakes'. This is a powerful advert as it shows how they could've prevented it and slows down whats going to happen and once you make a decision you can't take it back.

Hidden messages/Subliminal messages

Hidden messages are subtle messages that are hidden within an advert, for example the cadburys advert has a purple background is, this is more of a subconscience message as you don't realise but when you see the colour purple it makes you think of cadburys chocolate. This is effective because the colour of the product relates to the advert so it makes you link the two things. However this technique can't be measured as there is no proof/evidence that it actually works. Small print is also a way to include hidden messages, things such as includes terms and conditions and 'Does not include batteries'

Overt messages are clear messages that the brand uses to catch the audiences attention such as tagline's and slogans, E.g Nike (Just do it.) This technique is effective as the slogan is usually short and rememberable which helps the audience remember their product as it has a catchy slogan that you will relate to the product every time you see it. Slogans and tagline's are very important when advertising products/services because if its too long and not catchy people wont remember it.
However it can be very hard if you decide to change the slogan of your product in the future as people might not know that it relates to your product as they are so used to hearing the old one.

These adverts are usually very effective as they scare the audience so they know that the outcomes of your actions can be fatal to you as well as people around you.
However by using this type of technique might put people off of watching the advert as it might scare them.
Adverts also use different types of emotions including humour, sadness, fear and happiness

ASA was established in 1962 which is responsible for supervising codes so that the audience is not mislead. There job is to ensure that the consumers do not just enjoy the adverts but to trust them to make sure the adverts are friendly for TV.
ASA don't have to wait for an advert to get complaints, they can withdraw the advert if it is offensive or breaks their rules.
They have basic principles that adverts shouldn't break and they make sure that adverts are honest, truthful and don't false advertise.
An example of an advert breaking the rules is an Anti-Bullying advert which is a girl sewing her mouth shut. ASA decided that it was too graphic for children and that it isn't going to make someone act upon the bullying just disturb them. However it could be shown after 9pm but it appeals to children but they will probably be in bed.
https://www.asa.org.uk/

A face to face interview is an interview with one individual with a brand to find out what they like and what could be improved. E.g - Nike asking a adult if they like the product and why.
This is a good technique as the brand can find out who to target and which people aren't buying the product and why. However by doing this it is very time consuming and you are not getting as much information as you would if you did a group interview.
This is a form of qualitative research because the questions asked are open questions and need a informative answer.

A focus group is an interview with more than person at the same time to gather information about the brand/product and what people like and dislike. People are usually categorised into groups depending their age, gender, religious beliefs etc. This is because everyone is different and like different things so if they are separated the group is likely to agree. E.g - Diary Milk asking a group of teenagers why they like the product.
This is an efficient way because you can get different peoples thoughts, ideas and opinions in a short amount of time. However as this is a group interview people may be shy and not want to speak out or disagree with what people are saying.
This is a form of qualitative research because they are gaining information the the product with details on what could be improved.

An audience measurement panel measures how many people are in an audience from TV, radio, newspapers, magazines and online.
It is effective because companies are able to find out information about you from the things you buy and click on.
E.g - Youtube take in what you watch and shows you videos that you might enjoy because of your previously watched videos.
They do this because it helps companies target the right audience as it wouldn't be beneficial to advertise your product to someone who isn't interested. E.g Watching sky sports, the adverts are more likely to be related to sports - energy drinks, sports wear etc.
This is a form of quantitative research because it is more based on numbers and statistics.

E.g - complete this survey and get 20% off your next purchase.
However people might not want to take the time out of their day to fill out the survey so you wont get the information you are looking for.
This is a form of both qualitative and quantitive research as it can include both open and closed questions to collect information on the product.
