The most likely reason they prohibited cellphone use is because they wanted to create a more academically oriented school environment. I did not take this prohibition seriously until my cellphone got confiscated. I had to get my phone back from the dean after school. However that day, the dean had left to go to his Spin class and I waited 1.5 - 2 hours outside his office on a Friday evening in order to get my phone back before the weekend.
