I find that auditory learning is especially bad for me to learn as I end up feeling drowsy and I also end up focusing more of the voice of the orator, background noise etc rather than the actual content. I feel visually presented teaching can cause a much more impact for me. For example , a good short film , a documentary , if made well , can put an impact me a lot.

Making notes for theory based subjects does not really help I feel. I just mark whatever I feel is important in the text. For more theoretical studies I study best by explaining it to my self and using different abbreviations.
