In this quote, Vola is trying to try to calm Peter down and explain to him what he’s feeling, anger. Peter had just found out that his father made Peter drop Pax off at a place that was going to be a war zone, and his father knew it was, implying his father lied to Peter and didn’t care about Pax’s safety. The quote means that anger is something we all live with, and it can be a blessing and a curse in life. There’s personification/a metaphor when she refers to anger as a beast. We don’t actually own one, but Vola is saying it like this to show that we all have/will experience it a lot, and that it makes a big impact in people’s lives. In the end, Vola is saying anger can be ok, it’s used for different reasons to get what’s right.

Vola said to Peter “we all own a beast called anger. It can serve us: many good things can come of anger at bad things: many unjust things are made just. But first we all have to figure out how to civilize it.”The character Vola said this quote to peter because he yelled to Vola saying that he doesn’t get angry. The purpose to saying this was so Vola could explain to Peter that everyone gets angry even if they don’t think that they do. When this is being said, Peter has decided that it’s time to go out and find Pax. Vola is telling him everything he has to do before he goes out. At this point Peter was getting a little bit aggravated at Vola and says he doesn’t get mad. I think that this quote means that you can control your anger until a certain point where it will start to control you. In this quote there are a few literary devices which makes the quote more personal to Vola’s character. Those are my thoughts on this quote.

But first we all have to figure out how to civilize it.” In other words it means that anger can help us and be bad for us, but we always have it. I think the author wrote this to show readers how the relation between Peter and Vola has grown. The quote is important because it shows how Vola knows how to calm him down and really know him. This story/passage had a significant impact on my thinking about the story because it changes Peters mood.

When Vola says “‘we all own a beast called anger it can serve us: many good things come of anger at bad things; many unjust things are made just. But first we all have to figure out how to civilize it”. I think this means that we all get upset, mad and angry and good comes from it if we calm down and understand it. Anger for peter reminds him of his mother dying and how his anger made him feel like a bad person. But vola wants peter to know that everyone gets angry it’s just realizing why you’re angry and then changing what it was that made you angry. This quote is useful to everyone because we all get angry and usually for a good reason. This quote reminds us to calm down, understand why we are angry and then figure out better ways to change the thing that caused us to be angry.

Vola said it to Peter. She said it to tell him that everyone feels anger, and it’s okay to feel it. Anger can be dangerous, but good things come from it too. Just because he is angry doesn’t mean he’s like his father. Peter is getting ready to leave Vola, and got to the library. Peter is breaking down because his second bad memory comes back. He has anxiety , he just found out that his dad might have purposefully not tell Peter that the specific area Peter thought would be safe would become a war zone. Vola is trying to explain to Peter that everyone has anger and you can’t stop it, it is difficult to control, and it’s okay to have it. It’s not hereditary, or genetic, and since you have anger it doesn’t mean you’re like someone who gets angry.

Characters - Peter blocks his emotions and tries to keep them inside, because he is afraid of becoming like his father. Vola has been through a similar situation and know how to deal with it.

Conflict - Peter is worried about being like his father

Theme - Anger/rage, Everyone has problems, Fear of himself. Metaphor - compares anger to a beast

The literary devices make the writing have more depth, and makes it more interesting. It gives a visual. This quote means to me, is that it’s okay to have feelings, and it’s okay to feel things strongly. Everyone has their own emotions. So many people in the world block out their emotions, and then people can’t connect with each other, they can’t relate. If they connected with people, it might help them to heal. When Peter is getting ready to leave Vola and go to the library, he breaks down, because his second bad memory about his mother comes back. Vola says “We all own a beast called anger……………” (Pennypacker 218) In other words Vola is telling peter that everyone has anger, and cannot always be controlled. Just because he’s angry, it doesn’t mean he’s like his father. The author is trying to make us see that anger is in everybody but there is always a reason for it. Anger can be dangerous but it’s okay to feel it - You can’t escape it. She uses a metaphor to convey this idea.

This passage had a significant impact on my thinking about feelings and emotions. Sometimes, it’s just so much easier to block out your emotions, and pretend they don’t exist, but they will always come back. Vola calls anger a beast. Even if anger is a beast, it can be tamed. No matter what, it will still be a beast, but that doesn’t mean it has to be wild and unpredictable.

In the text it says that Vola tells Peter that everyone has anger and cannot always be controlled. Just because he is angry, it does not mean he is like his father. Peter is feeling this way because he picks up the newspaper and finds out that his father took Pax to the war zone knowing he was putting Pax in danger. After that Vola tried to comfort Peter by saying that everyone has a beast called anger inside you. Peter reacted by telling Vola he couldn’t end up with his father. This story/passage had a significant impact on my thinking about how all people can feel anger and how some people can “keep their cool” by standing up to anger and if you hide from anger it will bottle up inside you and it will eventually erupt out of you and unleash the terrible beast inside you.

The real world applications of this is that it explains it's ok to let anger out and to feel it. It also shows that it's not just about letting the anger out, it's about how you use and control that anger. Anger can be dangerous but also helpful in some instances. For example if someone releases anger in a positive way they should direct their anger towards working on something. Nger can be bad when people just explode on something or someone with their anger. These are my thoughts on the quote.

Izzy IL I myself think anger is needed. When peter is getting ready to leave Volla he breaks down because his second memory is coming back. Vola says we all own a best called anger. , . , Pennypacker 218. The quote means that anger should be used to help you sometimes. Anger helps people get over things. Vola is trying to explain to peter that everyone has anger and you can’t stop anger. But Peter block's his emotions inside because he doesn't want to be like his father. Vola also goes through something similar but different. In other words…” Vola is telling peter everyone has anger. Anger does not define you. It is in everybody. It can be dangerous but it is ok. Maybe the author uses a metaphor to convey ideas. This story/passage had a significant impact on my thinking about… How anger works. I never thought about it that way.

In the story just before this, Peter is getting ready to leave Vola and go to the library then he sees the newspaper article, then Peter breaks down because he found out that his father had lied to him about Pax. Pennypacker is trying to make us see that anger is in everyone, but there is always a reason for it; you have to feel it at some point. The author puts in a metaphor to convey this to the reader. Nobody can control their feelings, so why do we try to? Otherwise, she tries to tell us that anger is uncontrollable, and that is fine; nobody can stop their feelings, not for long anyways.

Peter was getting ready to go to the library and to leave Vola, and he broke down. Vola had made him a baseball bat and that triggered the memory of his mother telling him to control his anger and not to be like his father. He had found out that his father had known about the fighting in that area by the old mill and had purposely left Pax there. In other words, Vola tells Peter that everyone has anger and cannot always be controlled. Just because he is angry, it doesn’t mean he is like his father. The author is trying to make us see that anger is in everyone but there is always a reason for it. Sometimes you don’t know the specific reason, but there always is one. Anger can be dangerous but it is okay to feel it. Sarah Pennypacker uses a metaphor to convey this idea. This quote is important because it encourages you to not hide your feelings all the time. Many people are under the impression that anger is not okay and that you can’t be angry. This is not true, but anger has to be controlled. A lot of people get angry and do terrible things, and then they do damage to their surroundings and to themselves. This quote had a significant impact on my thinking about how so many parents and teachers teach kids that anger is mostly a terrible thing and that even though you may get angry, you can’t let it show. This is only partly true. Anger can be a bad thing, and you shouldn’t always react to it, but it is okay to be angry and act angry sometimes. I have always thought this, but not everyone else does and I am glad that the author of Pax agrees with me. I think that more people should agree that anger is okay.

This quote shows that Peter is getting very angry because his father knew that there would be war where they left Pax, this frustrated Peter very much and it made him incredibly angry. Everyone gets angry sometimes and if you can handle it, anger can become a good thing.

This relates to character because it reveals that Peter has been holding in anger for a long time and it might help him to let it all out. This reveals that Vola has a soft inside even though she has a hard outside and that Vola has had a hard time dealing with her own feelings too. Ths relates to conflict because it reveals that Peter thought that he wasn’t angry even though he was. This relates to the theme because everyone gets angry and most of the time they have a hard time understanding situations. I think that this quote is a metaphor and this gives an effect where we can better understand Peter’s anger. This quote really relates to me because sometimes I feel like I need to hold in my anger and it could really help if someone would tell me this whenever I have a problem with anger. It can serve us: many good things come of anger at bad things; many unjust things are made just. The quote is a metaphor to tell Peter that he is not “Super-Human.” In this part of the story the mood and theme is anger.

It can serve us; many good things come out of anger at bad things; many unjust things are made just. Anger is a beast is clearly a metaphor, and using literary devices makes it more memorable. Peter was angry at the time. This quote had a significant impact on my thinking about Peter’s Dad, he seemed just like a person with anger issues and then he puts his son’s pet fox in a place where war will be going on, now I think that Peter’s Dad is a cruel person.

Peter refused to admit that he was angry. Vola replied to him by saying “We all have a beast called anger. It can serve us: many good things can come out of anger: many unjust things are made just. But first we have to figure out how to civilize it.”- Vola, 218 “In other words Vola was trying to tell Peter that anger can lead to many good things, as long as you can learn how to control it.” The author is trying to give us a better understanding of Peter’s anger. The author made this quote memorable because this quote makes us think and explains Vola’s beliefs. This passage has a significant impact on my thinking. I now think that everyone can be horrible, but the more control you have over your anger the less horrible you can be. I see this idea in the world. War happens when people ‘fall out’ or the countries disagree on something. Also, arguments usually happen when people fail to control their anger.

But first we all have to figure out how to civilize it”(page 218) She told Peter this because she wanted to tell him that it’s okay to be angry as long as you manage it. Peter doesn’t want to be angry because his dad often gets angry and he doesn’t want to be like his dad. Peter is also upset at his dad because he didn’t tell his Peter that the area the dropped Pax off at was a war area. Vola wants peter to understand that anger is understanding each other and adapting to new problems and situations and coping with them. She also wants to help Peter understand his feelings because even though she seems tough, she is soft on the inside. Vola is trying to tell Peter this through a metaphor because that is her way of telling important things to people. She thinks that by comparing anger to a beast Peter will learn that anger is only bad if you let it be bad, but if you tame it, anger is okay.

Vola said this quote to Peter. She told him this when he was getting upset. She said, “We all own a beast called anger. It can serve us: many good things come of anger at bad things: many unjust things are made just. But first we all have to figure out how to civilize it.” In other words this means that anger will go away, and everything will eventually get better. She was trying to let him know that everyone feels anger and it's ok to feel it. She was trying to talk peter into admitting that he was angry. Anger is ok as long as you manage it. Peter was getting upset because his dad didn’t tell him that the area where they left pax would be blocked off because of war and she was trying to calm him down. This quote means that anger doesn’t always have to be bad. She is trying to tell him that anger isn’t always bad as long as you know how to react to it. We all get angry. It will get better, but it can’t get better if it was never not good. This quote proves that Peter doesn’t have a good relationship with his dad because he doesn’t want to be like him. Vola has a hard outside but a hard inside. She is tsundere (Hard at first but then gets calmer and nicer over time). This also proves that Vola doesn’t want others to suffer like she did. Peter doesn’t believe that he is angry but he is angry at his dad. The beast is compared to anger. This gives better understanding of how angry he was. To me this quote means that even though you might be mad, the anger will pass if you can control it. There is a quote that I think relates to it. This quote is, “It might be stormy now, but don't worry. It can't rain forever” This means that things will get better. This relates to the real world because everyone experiences anger even if you try not to be angry.

Vola saw that Peter was struggling so she said: “We are all a beast called anger. It can serve us: many good things can come out of anger: many unjust things are made just. But first we all have to figure out how to civilize it.” I think Vola wanted to show Peter that anger is not a good or a bad feeling in this quote. In this quote anger is compared to being a beast. A beast can be vicious on the outside but sweet on the inside, like Vola. I belief that Vola said this to Peter because she was had struggles with her emotions in the past. I think Vola knows that Peter’s relationship with his dad is not very good. Peter does not want to grow up to be like his dad. I think Vola knows this and wants Peter to adapt to new feelings and cope with the old ones.

And Peter was getting upset because his dad didn't tell him that the area where he left Pax off was blocked off because of war. Even though the dad knew about it. Anger can be a good or bad thing. If you own and understand your feelings, and know how to react. We all get angry sometimes but we need to civilize it. Control it. Peter’s relationship with his dad is not good, he does not want to grow up to be like him, he has anger. Vola has a hard outside but a soft inside. Vola has a hard time expressing her feelings, when she sees someone else she is forced to help them. Peter doesn't believe he is angry. Some of the themes are anger, understanding each other and adapting to new problems and situations, coping with feelings. There is a metaphor in the quote the beast is compared to anger, the reason that the author put this in was to give a better understanding. Makes it a memorable moment, it makes you think, and it explains Volas beliefs. I can connect this quote to everyone because everyone has anger. No matter how hard anyone tries they will still have anger.

The person that says this quote is Vola and she’s saying it to Peter. The quote is “We all own a beast called anger. It can serve us: Many good things come of anger at bad things: many unjust things are made just. But first we all have to figure out how to civilize it” In the book Pax feels like his father left Pax out in the woods to die because at that time the army was throwing bombs and that made Peter very angry. That’s why Vola said that. This quote is important because it says that all of us have this awful beast called anger: good things and bad things come from anger but what we need to do is control it what I mean is civilize it. When I get angry and then it stops I usually feel better. This quote of all the examples it had it must be a metaphor. It’s not a simile, personification or hyperbole. So it’s a metaphor because she says beast called anger and of course it’s not a real beast so that’s why it is a metaphor. The tone is that Peter has this beast called anger and he just doesn’t know how to control it and civilize it. The mood is suggestive. This quote in my opinion is true with most people.

I think the quote means that anger can be a good or bad thing when you own your feelings and understand your feelings. This quote should mean a lot to Peter. In other words, Peter’s relationship with his dad is not good. He doesn’t want to grow up to be like him. He also doesn’t want to have so much anger as his dad does. Vola has a hard time expressing her feelings too. The author is trying to make us see that the main theme of this quote is Anger. Vola and Peter are both adapting and to new problems and solutions. This story/passage had a significant impact on my thinking about different types of anger. I think that this quote means that it is okay to have anger and everyone has anger sometimes. Anger doesn’t always have to be bad. This could be good in the real world to calm people down about their stress and to let their emotions out. Overall, Vola is right on telling Peter to express his feelings and to be comfortable with having anger.

When Peter is getting ready to leave Vola and go to the library, he breaks down because his second bad memory about his mother is coming back. Peter also just realized that his dad knew that Pax was set free into the wild in a warzone. While this is happening, Vola says, “We all own a beast called anger. It can serve us: many good things come of anger at bad things; many unjust things are made just. But first we all have to figure out how to civilize it.” (Pennypacker 218). In other words, Vola tells Peter that everyone has anger and it cannot always be controlled. Just because Peter is angry does not mean he is like his father. Pennypacker is trying to make us see that anger is in everybody but there is always a reason for it. Anger can be dangerous but it’s okay to feel it. She uses the metaphor to convey this idea. It is okay to let anger escape every once in awhile. This story/passage had a significant impact on my thinking about anger because I always thought that anger was bad, but now I know that anger can also be good. This quote is important because it is actually explaining a lot more than it seems. In real life, there can be people that actually perform better when they are angry, from doing homework that they don’t want to do to lifting weights in a competition.

I think this quote means that anger is something that you need to learn to control. I think this reveals that Vola is very wise because she has experienced anger herself when feeling anger about the person she murdered.
I think that part of this quote is personification because she talks about anger as if it has a mind of its own. She refers to anger as a beast that you have to learn to tame or control. I think that what Vola said had a big impact on Peter because he always tries to keep in his anger.
I think this quote means that anger brings us many emotions but you have to make sure that your anger doesn’t get out of control. This quote relates to the world because people are angry about unjust things and they make sure that their message is heard.

When Peter found out that his dad left Pax in an unsafe place, he started to become angry, Vola noticed he started to get angry so she said “we all own a beast named anger….”. In other words, Peter started to get angry after he found out that his dad knew that there would be a war zone where they left Pax. That anger is bad when you wait too long but it can sometimes be in a positive way. Also the author is trying to make us see that anger is a beast that takes over us because anger is a positive or a negative in most ways. I think this quote is imporant because being angry sometimes is okay, even if you are angry don’t wait and save it inside because if you do you can explode at a wrong time, because it teaches us so much about how to control your emotions.

It can serve us: many good things come of anger at bad things; many unjust things are made just. But first we all have to figure out how to civilize it.” This means that it is okay to become angry, but only if you can control your anger. If you do not, only bad things can come. As Peter's father leaves Pax near the war zone, then finds him, he proceeds to laugh when he realizes that he found him. If Peter knew that part of the story he would not be able to control his anger, knowing how little his father cares.

Vola told this quote to Peter. Its purpose was that Vola telling Peter it’s ok to be angry, as long as you can contain it. When this was said in the story, Peter was just realizing that his dad knew that he was sending Pax to an unsafe area when he joined the army. This quote means that everyone gets angry, and it can be bad, but it can also be good. It can be bad because sometimes when you are angry you say and do things that you don’t mean, but it can be good because being angry can help you let loose bad feelings and anxiety. If you don’t let loose it can build up and you will one day explode at the wrong time. The quote is a metaphor because it compares anger to a beast. It tells us anger can be powerful in a good or bad way. This quote to me means that when you are angry, it is like you are dragging a beast around, except in your head. This makes me think of that when I'm angry, it is such a pain because whatever I am angry about, that is the only thing I can focus on. But also, when I am angry it encourages me to speak up for whatever I am angry about. I see this idea in the world like how people should just controllably let their feelings out, because they shouldn’t want to bottle it up because it will be like “dragging a beast around.” The author is trying to make us see that anger is a feeling that everyone has, and you can make it a good thing, or a bad thing. The author is also trying to make us see that anger is a beast that can be tamed, or left untamed. This quote is important because it can teach people that anger isn’t always a bad thing. It can be used to do good, or bad. Some real world applications and connections that can be drawn from the quote are anxiety from someone being angry at you, self anger, and when many people are angry about a specific topic. This passage had a significant impact on my thinking about what anger is. Before I read this, I thought anger could only be a bad thing, and I couldn’t think of any reasons why it could be good. Before reading this, I never thought that anger could help you stand up for someone, or push you to do what is right, I always thought it can only be negative.

Because of pax I learned anger is an ok feeling to have because when you control yourself you can redeem yourself. Everyone has anger and we can’t control it. Anger can also help you let loose and it can help you find hope. When anger is used wrongly it can be bad because you may be bugged by it and explode at one time. You also might say and do things you don’t mean. The point that the author is trying to make us see that anger is bad if you use it in the wrong way but it can be good in some situations. Usually she’s kind of stubborn and doesn’t really show her emotions on the outside, but this shows that she does have a heart. I like how the author chose to use a metaphor because you understand the character better. To me she can can possibly serve as a mother figure for Peter. This quote is important because it can affect Peters decisions. He might not get as mad, he might stay longer and do what Vola thinks he should do. This can connect to real life because some people have anger issus and that can affect their decisions. I think Peter feels more comfortable and closer with Vola now

When Vola said that quote in the story, in other words she was telling Peter that everyone gets angry and telling him that it is okay and normal to feel it. She means that anger can be a good or bad thing, and you have to own and understand your own feelings, and know how to react. We all get angry sometimes and have to know how to handle it. Peter was feeling angry because his dad did not tell him that the area they left Pax off was blocked because of the war, and something like that hurt Peter and made him really angry because it put Pax in danger. His relationship with his dad wasn't very good because he did not want to grow up to be like his dad. Vola has a soft inside and a hard outside so she was forced to help Peter. But Peter does not believe that he is angry and Vola was trying to convince him that he was. The anger was being compared to a beast inside. The theme in the story was anger, and understanding each other and adapting to new problems. This quote means a lot to me because I get angry sometimes and I think that it is wrong but I have to know that it is okay to get angry because it isn’t a choice. I see it in the world when someone does a bad thing and another person gets mad at them, or just anger in general, because everyone has it.

A couple hours before Peter left for the bus Vola and him were talking, Peter was angry about his dad but didn’t know it. Vola told him “We all own a beast called anger. It can serve us: many good things come of anger at bad things: many unjust things are made just. But first we all have to figure out how to civilize it.” The quote was saying that that everyone has anger, and it is okay to be angry sometimes, and that anger can be a good or bad thing.

There is a significance about the characters, conflict, and the theme. Peter’s relationship with his dad is not good, he got mad at his dad because he didn’t want to be like him, it shows Peter has anger. This quote helps us learn something about Peter, Peter being mad is a big significance. Vola’s quote also reveals a big significance about her. Vola has a hard outside but a soft inside she gave Peter good advice and helped him. We know that Vola has a hard time expressing her own feeling but when she sees someone else she helps them. There is conflict in the story and this quote shows it. Peter does not think that he is angry even though Vola is telling him he is, it is Peter vs Dad. The theme is important because it goes throughout the story. Anger, there is a lot of anger in the book. Understanding each other and adapting to new problems and situations, is something that happens a lot in the book too, and coping with feelings, in this book everyone has had to learn to cope with others feelings . This quote is trying to say that you need to and should own and understand your feeling. Anger a good or bad thing, but you need know how to react to it, and control it. The big thing that this quote it saying that we all get angry sometimes and that is okay.

This could be good in the real world because a lot of people think that anger is a bad thing so they hold it in and never show their anger, and if it was in the real world people would show their feeling more.

We all live with it, have to learn how to deal with it and move on. In other words, we all get angry and do dumb things when we are angry. But we have to learn from our mistakes and make better choices the next time. The tone of the quote is serious. The mood is also serious but also mad and angry. The author is trying to make us see that Peter is extremely mad.

Introduce the quote: Peter had just found out that his dad left Pax where there was going to be fighting in the war and Vola had told him that quote to try and tell him that everyone had experienced the anger that he was feeling at some point of their lives, though not necessarily with the same circumstances. Paraphase: In other words, Vola is trying to tell Peter that everyone had experienced that kind of anger some time in their lives and that she knows what it feels like. Analyze: The significance of that quote is very great in this story even though the meaning is very dark. The author is trying to make us see that Vola has more experience in matters like the one Peter is going through that what she lets on, and that she was a VERY major part in the plot and outcome of this story. Evaluate: This quote is very important because it was basicly what Vola had discovered in her long time of solitude in her cabin and some of the connections that the quote has is that many people aren't bad but had just let their anger control them but many good things in this world had come out of anger as well, so it is neither good nor bad. Ths quote had a significant impact on my thinking about which characters had a very major role in this story because I had always thought of Vola as just a minor character that was taking care of Peter while he healed though she might have been the link that was keeping Peter from going “insane” because she had kept him constantly doing something and was his company during his times of worry.

Vola said this to convince Peter that he was different to his father and that he didn't have to take his anger out on other people, he could learn how to control it. Peter got angry because he had looked at the newspaper and he had realized that it was dated to 12 days ago, and that his father would have known that it was going to be dangerous if they had left Pax there alone on the highway near the windmill. Vola had spoken the quote when Peter had started to clench his teeth and his fists because he was starting to get angry. The quote means that everyone has anger, it can help you do good and bad things, it helps you right wrongs, but you have to learn how to control it. It shows that Peter does have anger, but he doesn't want to acknowledge it, he knows how to control it. they didn't use any literary devices because the words and the meaning already said enough, they made a big impact on what needed to be said. This quote means that anger is a reality, but if you learn how to control your anger it won't affect people around you. I see this because people have anger that isn't controlled that then impacts others and can wreck lives, families, and towns.

Vola tells Peter a quote about anger. This quote is a very important quote that has a very deep meaning. To me this quote means that everyone can get angry and it is not a bad or dangerous feeling but if we dont learn to calm that anger down it can go out of control. Peter tried to hide his anger only because he did not want to grow up like his dad. Peter didn't know that everyone can get mad and that it is not a bad thing, we just need to control it

When Peter found out that his Father knew that the place that they let Pax into the wild at was a future warzone Peter got angry and then Vola said this quote "We all own a beast called Anger. It can serve us many good things come out of Anger at bad things many unjust things are made just. But first we all have to figure out how to civilize it". Peter denied that he was getting angry and he was getting even more angry because he did not want to be like his father. I think the quote is trying to say Anger can be a good thing but you just have to tame it first.
