Any moving object or particle transfers energy. Heat wave is an air mass of high temperature. When a pitcher throws a base ball, the base ball carries energy with it from the pitcher to the catcher. Many types of motion in Earth's system transfer energy in this way. For example, wind & flowing water transfer energy through the movement of particles. Energy can also be transfer in waves. A wave is an up & down or back & forth motion that carries energy from place to place but leaves the matter behind. For example, sound waves from one vibrating object, such as a guitar string, can travel to your ear. In order to reach your ear, sound waves require a medium, such as air, to travel through. A medium is the ,material through which a wave travels. Waves can travel through many different materials. In the ocean, water is the medium for the waves. Although the wave travels through the water, the water particles vibrate in place. The waves produced by an earthquake also require a medium. These waves transfer energy as they shake the lithosphere. Electromagnetic waves are waves that transfer electrical & magnetic energy. You are probably most familiar with this type of energy in the form of visible light. The sunlight that warms your skin travels to Earth as electromagnetic waves. Heat flows takes place Whenever two object of different temperatures are brought into contact. Heat is the thermal energy transferred from on object to another as a result of the difference in temperature. Thermal temperature is the total energy of all of the atoms that make up an object. These vibration contains energy. If two objects have different temperatures, heat will flow from the warmer object to the colder one. The heat will continue to flow until the objects are at the same temperature. Heat Flow- transfers energy from the warm air into cold ice cream, causing the ice cream to melt. Radiation- Recall that radiation is the direct transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves. Conduction,- when a fast moving sand molecule bumps into a slower- moving particle, the faster particle transfers some of its energy. The closer together the particles in a substance are, the more effectively they can conduct heat. Convention- in fluids, particles can move easily from one place to another. As the particles move, their energy goes along with them.
