Guinea, a beautiful country filled with diverse culture and natural resources, has been facing a huge problem regarding their quality of education. We have children not being able to attend school because of distance, the schools are unsanitary, there aren't enough teachers for all these children, etc. All these problems need to be put into the spotlight so different useful solutions can be brought into action.

There are several ways we could move forward that would allow the students and faculty members access to clean water. For starters, a system could be developed to collect rainwater. Sometimes it's hard to predict when it'll rain, so there will be builders or workers able to build wells in surrounding areas in order to access the water underground. Now in regards to sanitation, we have school girls having to stay home for week when on their period because there aren't any products like pads at school for them to use. To fix this, we could have donations made to schools for these sanitary napkins and bins to throw them in. In Joza, South Africa we had a teacher donate pads herself since most families could not afford to purchase a pack of pads. These things are what will strongly encourage girls to come to school and feel like this is a safe environment for them to learn in.

Problem #1- Water & Sanitation

At school, one thing that seems like an obvious expectation is clean, running water since it's used in the bathrooms and drinking fountains. Unfortunately, the students and teachers in Guinea don't have access to clean water at school, making them susceptible to disease and an overall decline in health. Again, the issue is water AND sanitation. The sanitation aspect involves girls not having sanitary products when they're on the menstrual cycles, classrooms not being sanitized leaving dust and germs out for the students and teachers, etc.

Problem #2- Lack of Qualified Teachers

One fact involving Guinea's lack of teachers is this: 1 teacher for a classroom of 80 students. Not only is this unfair to the teacher having control over so many students, but it's unfair to the students. Especially since there's less opportunity for one on one time if students need clarification on something but others are ready to move on. Another issue involving teachers is that while there are some teachers for these schools, a vast majority of them are unable to teach a lot of the material from their curriculums because they weren't provided with the proper training.

In order for students to get the most of their education experience in a place like Guinea, more teachers would have to be included into the system. For this to happen, teaching programs would have to be provided for students in a higher class. Teachers from the U.S. would be sent out to further educate these students and show them how it all works. This way those students who chose to get involved into the program would benefit as well, by pursuing their own career and continuing their education. The students would be able to learn how teaching and studying education goes, and they would later on pass that on to the students to come after them. Doing this would not only expand the number of teachers available, but also help out the older students in their future careers. The local teachers could also be taught and learn more than they know and help in the expansion of educating all children in Guinea instead of 1/4 of the children that actually go to school.

Another issue that needs to discussed is the condition of not only the classrooms but the school building itself. You cannot expect teachers to teach and students to learn in a building that is quite literally crumbling. There needs to be a rebuilding of the schools and newer systems need to by put into place so that the classrooms and building as a whole can stay looking new for as long as possible.

In Guinea, school buildings are nothing like in America. The buildings are dirty, too small and have everyone cluttered up together. The conditions of buildings is what can cause most of the reason as to why children do not go to school at all. The solution to having better buildings can be by starting over and building from scratch. There are places in Guinea that have empty spaces or places that nobody uses in which more classroom buildings can be built. Local people from the places can come together and build classrooms. They could start by cleaning out the areas in which they want to build and then bring in the construction teams to help make it happen. If this were to take place, the percentage of students being enrolled into schools would go up. Having new and clean buildings for their children, would give parents one more reason to sign their kids up for schooling and Guinea would have a much brighter future ahead.
