I think making many things into contests and competitions works great for motivation!! Most students love to compete and to win! Of course, this must be facilitated correctly as teachers will also have the opportunity to teach sportsmanship skills, and also must engage students who are not as naturally competitive as others.
Technology can play a huge role in these as well, like my personal favorite, Kahoot!

Quizlets are another technology based activity like kahoot that engages students while motivating their participation. Other Ways to Motivate students include rewarding students with a “carot” for participation or correct answers, praise for a job well done, and even braking down a standard into multiple smaller parts. Breakinb down the standard
into smaller parts allows the students to feel success along the way to learning a complex standard and that positive feeling of I can, has a large impact on motivation. Finally changing the mindset of the students to that of a growth mindset can also help motive students
A

Max, jr in highschool, said he loves Kahoot. He also said competition between classes is motivating. He likes when his class beats out another class.
Prizes that don't cost money works too. For example, longer recesses, free time in class, time on a computer, etc.

They can use positive praise, intrinsic rewards, positive referrals, class Dojo, stickers, pencils, awards certificates, class rewards, and just simply getting them interested and involved in the content being taught. Hands on activities, songs/chants, gestures and hand movements, anything to engage and excite them.
