Even though I don't know much about my "birth family" history and background, I am thankful I can tell you a little about my family's background. Before my grandmother passed away, I remember her telling me that our family tree dates back to the Pioneer days. After reading several "Little House on the Prairie" books, I fell in love with the history of the pioneers and thought it was super cool to be related to the famous Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Growing up, I never thought that my own family would be related to one of our past Presidents of the United States. I thought my family and our history wasn't that exciting, but now I know that we are more interesting than I expected.

After I was adopted, my parents brought me back to Amarillo, Texas to be raised in a country home. I grew up going to Panhandle Independent School District during my K-12 years. There wasn't much of a cultural diversity at the school I grew up in. When there was a student that came from a different background, I made every effort to be friends with them, but sometimes the language barrier was hard to get over or those students didn't want me to talk to them. Panhandle, Texas and its' school district is mostly white, but there are a few families that come from a different culture. This experience hasn't effected the way I see other people from different cultures, but seeing how the students from different backgrounds were treated during their time in Panhandle broke my heart.

Even though I attended a public school, I wasn't afraid to go out and share the love and light of Jesus Christ. Even after moving to San Angelo, the Lord has showed me many opportunities to be able to go out and share my faith and be a light on campus.

During the summer before my junior year of high school, I had the opportunity to go on an overseas mission trip to Madrid, Spain. Once the plane landed, there was a complete culture shock. During the duration of the 10 days that I was there, I was able to not only do mission work, but we were able to interact with the locals there as well as people who come from different cultures as well. There were several conversations that my group and I had, but I remember getting to talk to and interact with a woman who worked in an ice cream shop in Madrid. This experience completely changed my life as well as seeing the world from a culture that I wasn't familiar with.

With the knowledge I've gained from this class and the other education classes I've taken at Angelo State, I know I will be prepared to have and incorporate multicultural education into my classroom. By knowing that every student has a voice, story, and that they are unique, I want to provide a classroom for all of my students to be able to learn about all of the cultures and realizing that there are so many stories that come from those cultures. I hope to have to opportunity to be able to welcome a student from a different culture into my classroom in the future.

For my classroom, I want to use literature and several strategies to help my students to understand and soak up the different perspectives of the different people who endured different storms in many different different cultures. By doing this, I want to provide my students with opportunities to be able to relate to different stories and even provide their peers with ideas of what they can do to help each other learn and speak up for one another in the near future. Along with literature, I want my students to be able to write down their thoughts about different kinds of culture and the events that happened in their literature books. This structure will help my students not only become great readers and writers, but it shows them that they have a voice and story and that they truly matter.

Summary

I have learned so much about myself from this experience/assignment. When it comes to cultural diversity, there are many aspects that so many of us look over and don't take the time to acknowledge it. After taking time to really think about cultural diversity and learning so much about it from this course, my awareness of if has definitely changed. As a future teacher, I know that I need to be ready to get to know my student's and their own cultural backgrounds. From these, I hope to be able to provide an environment in the classroom that will be fun, welcoming, and a place for them to relate to issues as they are learning from the content in the classroom. When it comes to culture, diversity, and multiculturalism, teachers need to be aware of each and know the difference between the three. In our society today, there are daily things that happen and effect others and their own culture. I know that I need to take into consideration of the experiences that others have gone through as well as what they might be currently going through. When something comes up, I hope to bring attention to my students of what they can do to help in issues like this. I plan to take many of the big points that were learned from this assignment and course when it comes to preparing for my own future classroom. Every one of my students has a voice and a story, no matter what culture and background that they come from.

My Family Life After Adoption

After I was adopted, my life was so great. I never imagined to be adopted into a Christian loving family who loves the Lord as well as each other. As I was growing up, I always felt "different." I always thought that I didn't belong and that I was never wanted. As an adopted child, I have always struggled with the "unknowing" of where my life started and where I could be today. Knowing that I am have white and half Hispanic, today, I am proud to be able to fill in the bubble "other" when it asks for my ethnicity. Being an adopted child has shown me not only the grace that God has for us everyday, but that everyone has an amazing plan in store for them and that their story is unique and will impact someone's life in one way or another. I have learned so much from my family. I am who I am, today, because of my family and experiences as an adopted child.
