His responsibilities as an educator of undergraduate students include selecting reading materials, developing and grading exams, and developing course curriculum in line with department standards and goals. Father Gerard Sauer,, also attended numerous adjunct faculty meetings, in part to collaborate with school leadership on the development of these standards.

In 2017 Reverend Sauer was an honoree at the Ozanam Hall Nursing Home as part of the Annual Rose of Carmel Dinner. He was recognized alongside Michael Brescia, co-founder and executive medical director at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx.

Rev. Gerard Sauer holds a master of arts and master of divinity from the Seminary of Immaculate Conception in Huntington, New York. While studying theology at the school, he took part in pastoral year parish staff meetings and developed a number of new programs.
