With a rise in cars and geographical distance, people often get food on the go whether it be fast food or from street vendors. However, with a lack of public garbage bins and with the space that it takes up in the car, people often throw their garbage out the window or leave it somewhere other than the trash bin.

Humans are very material beings that need to discard, however most of our discard doesn’t serve a purpose and often turns into waste. Trying to drastically reduce the amount of discard wouldn’t work since it is innately human to discard, so we have to look into the time and quantity of this discard to see where changes can be made.

Very rarely do many people leave restaurants and fast food places without having leftovers.

“But, fast food and drink is also a major contributor to the amount of discard that is currently being generated. This is because it is typically provided in large, oversized portions that are often too much for people to consume, and because it is supplied to consumers in single-use, disposable receptacles – cups, trays, bags.” (39)

Cars aren’t designed for trash and discard, and many people eat on the go in their car, so without trash cans they throw the discard out the window.

“Such moralizing, I would argue, overlooks two things. The first is the lack of design for trash in the interiors of cars themselves. While car interior design has caught up with some aspects of ‘on-the- go’ food and drink, notably through recognizing the need for drink holders, it hasn’t quite recognized the discard that is left over from in-car food and drink consumption.” (40)

It's more convenient for people to not take their trash with them somewhere to dispose of properly, it's not like someone's going to take their trash with them all the way home if there's no trash cans, it's unlikely to see someone walking around with a garbage bag just for their trash.

It's not just a matter of people's laziness or unwillingness to throw out their trash properly. The world around us is not designed for proper trash disposal with everything being made of material that can only be used once, and the design flaws in our cars and city infrastructures that lack availability and opportunity to dispose of our trash.

Where there are humans there is discard, so it's impossible to try to completely eliminate discard, so instead we have to look at the different ways and approaches we take to discard, and to look for opportunities to reduce waste being created from our discard.
