Sonnet: To Time Summary

This speaker is analyzing the world and thoughts on death as an unavoidable thing. She also analyzes life as a prison that is never ending, the only escape being death. Throughout the poem, the motif of time is used as a means of highlighting the restriction it has on one's life. Plath states, "Time is a great machine of iron bars" which means that time is a prison that is never ending. The poem ends with a sense of acceptance.

This image connects to the poem because Sonnet: To Time is about life and the endless feeling of it. This image of a clock melting in someone's hand was chosen because it shows how this seemingly mundane thing can have major impacts on those with mental health issues. This image represents Plath's feelings of life.

The mood of this poem is very melancholic. This poem makes the reader feel the emotion's that Plath is feeling. The emotion the reader may have is very similar to the stages of grief. The poem starts of very sad and almost in disbelief that life is truly the way that it is, but ends with the acceptance of death. I connect this to my own struggles with death, and how while it's something I am scared to face, I've come to accept that it will happen eventually.

Death comes in a casual steel car - Personification
Voice crying exclusion in my ear - Personification
Time is a great machine of iron bars - Metaphor
The poem's use of figurative language deals with death in an almost romantic way. The figurative language in the poem describes the pains of life in a way that is so devastating that it's almost beautiful.
