We keep paper records of both a parents notice of intent to homeschool and that it got submitted to DOE and of our confirmation letter to the family filed by year. When a request is received, we can look in these paper files and verify.

Sometimes parents submit a request to homeschool. However, we noticed that some parents who submit an intent to Homeschool do not file the paperwork with DOE. We rely on DOE notifying us when a parent has submitted the intent to Homeschool. But, we don't follow up on subsequent years to confirm families are submitting intent to Homeschool paperwork each year

MSAD 11 does print out the Notice of Intent and the SY assessment for each student. This practice started prior to the Maine Department of Education implementing the Home Instruction Portal. Paper files are kept in a locked file at the Superintendent’s Office for two years. Before shredding, Home Instruction documents are scanned to the District Server by school year and kept.

Does the state retain homeschool instructions records and do they provide those to SAU's when a student returns to the SAU after being in home instruction for a while?

Clarity surrounding charter schools and maintaining these records would be helpful. Essentially do charter schools (particularly virtual) need to notify the resident SAU when a student withdraws to homeschool? Or do we need to manage homeschool records ourselves. This has been very unclear in the past.

MDIRSS AOS 91 keeps the signed intent form and the assessment in paper form. We also keep an electronic list with the student name, parent name, date we received the form, whether initial or subsequent, notes indicating the dates the student enters and exits (if they are in and out) as well as notes if they are enrolled part-time in one of our schools.

We have an extreme shortage of storage space this would be a hardship. Why would the school unit be responsible to keep this information, when the parent / guardian accepts the responsibility of educating their child?
