Denis and Francis were only able to travel part of it by camel and they did the rest by bus.
Similarities:
Kashgar was the same for both groups of travelers.

Differences:
During the time that Marco Polo journeyed through Mongolia, the people would probably have been more focused on training warriors than when Denis and Francis traveled there. This is true because the Mongols were conquering their empire when Polo visited, but when the two men went it was peaceful.
Similarities:
Mongolia looked pretty much the same to Marco Polo and Denis and Francis. The Mongols lived in circular houses, they had sheep everything, they worked well with horses, and they used a bow and arrow.

Differences:
Polo described Iran as a "very large country with eight kingdoms". There were no longer kingdoms there when Denis and Francis visited. Marco Polo also noted that the people there were murderous. When the two men traveled there they said that the people of Iran were the nicest and most hospitable people they met throughout their whole trip.
Similarities:
In the book about Marco Polo, he described the valley of assassins. He explained how a group of men or terrorists would take people there to be killed. Denis and Francis visited the same place. Although the assassins were gone they still encountered terrorists on their journey.

However, when Denis and Francis passed through it they had a small house like building that was much more sufficient shelter.
Similarities:
The path that Denis and Francis took was almost the same as the one that Marco Polo took. The Walkhan Corridor was mountainous and very cold. It was also uninhabited during the times that all of the travelers journeyed through it.

A lesson that Denis and Francis learned on their trip is that you have to be able to work with people to get what you want. The men learned this through many experiences. One of them being when they could not get into Afghanistan because a man was denying their visa, but in the end they got in because they gave him some money to pay the supposed "fine".
