Dr Kim would visit schools and apartment compounds. The people were eager to show off their injuries (big or small). She was expected to treat the people 'selflessly'. This meant donating blood and small bits of skin, Dr Kim was an exception to this because of her height and weight. However, she was still expected to trek the mountains for the medical herbs. Dr Kim and other doctors slept out in the open and washed only every few days.

At the age of 13, she graduated to the Socialist Youth League which is a standard rite of passage for North Koreans.

After the summer of 1994, during the winter, there was a food shortage, and homes were being damaged. Because of the decrease in food, the patients that Dr Kim took care of

(especially the kids) weren't growing properly and were smaller than ever.

The children and patients were getting more and more sick, with minor colds and coughs and kept dying. The space inside the hospital decreased more and more. Dr Kim wanted to provide more food for the children.

'Much of the medical equipment was obselete and broken down'. The resources and access to medical equipment was worse than before and it made Dr Kims job even more difficult.

1993 - Clash with Hospital managment

Her boss overruled her decision to give her patient with acute bronchitis antibiotics. Her patient was discharged, but he claimed he was 'not fit to live' so he commited suicide soon after.

Even though Dr Kim tried to save a lot of people(the one beer bottle=1IV), Dr Kim knew she hadn't been a doctor for long enough and couldn't save many children, she said " I remembered all of them."anyone who died on her watch.
