Summary: In this chapter, Magwitch is very ill and is dying. Mr. Jaggers tries desperately to postpone Magwitch's trial but to no avail. Pip visits Magwitch in his jail cell and tells him his daughter is alive and wealthy. He also tells Magwitch that he loves Estella. Magwitch dies at the end of the chapter

Analysis: Pip's benefactor, Magwitch dies in jail from illness; but not before Pip can tell Magwitch the saddest and happiest news. He hears that his child is alive and well. Magwitch, not being able to show it, is angry at himself for the decisions he has made. He will never be able to see his child or what she becomes. He is no doubt happy.

Quote: "She lived and found powerful friends. She is living now. She is a lady and very beautiful. And I love her!"

Summary: Pip knows Magwitch is Estella's father but he cant be 100% sure. he goes to Jaggers for confirmation. He tells him that he knows Magwitch is her father and Jaggers does not deny it, but does not accept it either. Pip annoys Jaggers until he finally tells Pip the story. He says Molly (Estella's mother) was accused of murder and he won her case as her defense lawyer. She told Magwitch (her husband) that she killed their daughter so Magwitch thinks Estella is dead and Molly doesn't want her. Jaggers, feeling sympathy for Estella, helps her get adopted by Miss Havisham. Wemmick is also in the room at the time. Jaggers makes them swear not to tell anyone else the story.

Analysis: Pip thinks he knows who Estella's father is, so he decides to ask Jaggers. Jaggers is rather unresponsive, and in a rather childish pursuit of the truth, Pip decides to pester Jaggers until he gets the full story. Pip's motive for doing this, his love for Estella, is very strong one. Jaggers finally caves, but is very uneasy about Pip and Wemmick telling others.

Motif: A motif in this chapter is Pip's relentlessness toward Jaggers. It is recurring and drawn out.

Connection:

Summary: Pip goes out to meet the anonymous person who sent him a letter. He finds his way to an empty looking house. When he enters, he is attacked and tied to a bed. The attacker reveals himself as Orlick. Orlick confesses to Pip that he attacked Mrs. Joe and tells Pip that Mrs. Joe's death was his fault. He then explains to Pip that he was the one who made Orlick's life miserable. He says that Pip was favored over him and he was bullied. Orlick picks up a stone hammer and is about to beat Pip's head in.. when a group of men come in and scare Orlick away. Pip recognize the men as Herbert, Startop, and Trabb's Boy. Herbert explains that he found Pip by Orlick's letter and rushed over to help him. The men head back to London immediately. Pip has illusions of what happened at the sluice-house.

Analysis: When Pip is accused for ruining Orlick's life, Pip sees that Orlick has been drinking. Orlick is obviously a lunatic and very drunk. Throughout this encounter he is thinking about how he will never see Estella or any of his friends ever again. Herbert and his gang burst in and save Pip. Herbert saves Pip because he cares for his friend. Herbert and Pip are like brothers after all. Pip has illusions of the traumatic experience he has just experienced.

Literary Symbols: Orlick loathes Pip for rising up the social ladder by being favored over himself. Orlick hates the connection between Joe and Pip and their Father-Son bond. He despises Pip for being what he isn't. The symbol here is Jealousy. Jealousy drove Orlick into attacking Mrs. Joe and attacking Pip. Orlick is jealous

Connections:

Pip and little Pip are walking down the streets of London when Pip recognizes Estella driving a carriage. Estella

Analysis: This ending is a sad ending to the book.

Summary: Pip, injured by the fire at the Satis house, is tended to by Herbert. Herbert informs him that he had talked to Magwitch recently, and had learned more about him. Magwitch had a daughter, but eventually the mother swore to destroy the baby, committed murder, was acquitted, and fled. Magwitch then met Compeyson, who used these events to blackmail him to work for him as a partner in crime. Pip, after learning these details, then proclaims that Magwitch is Estella's father.

Analysis: Throughout the chapter, Herbert is simultaneously talking to Pip about Magwitch's past and tending his wounds. This shows how close the two have bonded over the course of the book. Also, Pip shows brilliant observation skills when he discovers how all of the other characters (e.g. Magwitch, Estella, Compeyson) are connected.

Quote: "'He was the kindest of nurses, and at stated times took off the bandages... and put them on again, with a patient tenderness that I was deeply grateful for.'" Pip is then abused by Pumblechook, who attempts to use him to gain popularity, and is generally shunned by the town. He then looks Joe and Biddy, but they are not where he expects them to be. Pip, fearing that they are absent, then runs into both of them---on their wedding day. Pip swallows his ambitions to marry Biddy and congratulates them, then leaves the town. Pip prepares to repay his debts and accepts Herbert's job offer. Pip lives many years happily with Herbert and Clara.

Analysis: Pip returns to his home only to find that the majority of the inhabitants, hearing of his fall from fortune and the lies that Pumblechook spreads, now resent him as a failure. This is an odd sentiment when compared to the reality, where Pip leads a decent living.

Motifs: Satis house, a motif for a lack of change, is destroyed.

Connections:

Summary: Magwitch is jailed but there is no evidence of his identity. His trial is delayed, but all it will take is one witness to ensure Magwitch is sentenced to death. Magwitch attempts to give his entire fortune to Pip and Jaggers decides to spare his feelings and tell him it will go to Pip. Next, Herbert announces he is going to Cairo, Egypt. He invites Pip to come work for him there. He also decides to marry Clara, with Pip as the best man.

Analysis: Magwitch is basically awaiting his death sentence. It is inevitable that some witness will come forth and confirm Magwitch's identity. Jaggers obviously has a soft side that has not been seen throughout the book, as he doesn't tell Magwitch his fortune will be going to the government just to spare his feelings. Pip is already feeling down, now Herbert says he is moving to Egpyt. Although he is invited, Pip is unsure whether he will go.

Symbols: Jaggers symbolizes mercy in this chapter. The Jaggers we have seen in previous chapters most likely would have told the truth with disregard for Magwitch's wellbeing.

Connection:

Summary: While Pip was finishing the partnership of Herbert, he finds out that he's in the Middle East. Pip then gets a message from Wemmick and one from an anonymous man. Wemmick saying they should be ready to move Magwitch in two days, and the other saying to do something to "Uncle Provis" and telling him to the marshes secretly. If he goes to the marshes, he's going to miss the Great Escape. Pip travels to the marshes from a carriage, and rests in the inn. Pip then remembers how he treated Mr. Joe so badly when he tried to be a gentleman, regretting it. Pip, not eating his food, heads out to the marshes to meet the anonymous man.

Analysis: This chapter specifically has a dark feeling to it. The anonymous man threatening Pip was rather confusing, but was mysterious at the same time. Pip again has a difficult time to choose if he wants to fulfill his responsibilities or ditch them and do something else.

Quote: "I had never been so struck at so keenly for my thanklessness to Joe, as through the brazen impostor Pumblechook. Pip asks Biddy if he may have little Pip. He is given little Pip after a small debate. Biddy asks Pip if he still thinks about Estella. This inspires him to go to the Satis house where he finds Estella. After a summary of their lives, Pip and Estella leave the house and Pip believes they will never part again.

Analysis: This is not the original ending.

Summary: Pip, Herbert, and Startop set off on their plan to get Magwitch out of England. They hope to get him onto a German vessel and let the ship leave England with him. After being picked up, Magwitch expresses high hopes for his future. The group experience no setbacks initially, but the rowing gradually get rougher and they become paranoid about the darkness. However, they arrive at an inn for the night, where Pip learns of suspicious happenings around the area. Disturbed, Pip decides to sneak Magwitch further along on land, while Herbert and Startop meet up with them later with the boat. This succeeds, and they come within sight of the German ship, but then they are intercepted by a British galley, whose skipper calls for Magwitch's arrest. Suddenly, Magwitch recognizes Compeyson on board the galley and attacks, driving them both into the water. Magwitch, though wounded, survives and is arrested, but Compeyson is lost (though Magwitch claims to have not directly killed him). Herbert and Startop return to London, while Pip stays with Magwitch as he is led to prison, now completely devoted to him. Severely injured, Magwitch is comforted by the false notion that Pip will remain a gentleman; Pip does not correct him.

Analysis: This is the climax of the story, but the heroes are foiled by the evil force that is Compeyson. Now that hope is lost for Magwitch, Pip becomes closer to him than ever before, trying to make Magwitch's inevitable demise as comfortable as possible.

Symbols: The river the group travels on represents Magwitch's hopes of freedom. As he progresses, he builds a huge amount of confidence, believing that nothing can stop him now. However, Compeyson crushes his hopes, and his actions send Magwitch back to the beginning of the journey.

Connections:

Summary: After Magwitch dies, Pip realizes that he is poor with no money. On one day, Pip's creditors show up and arrest him for debt. Pip then falls into an illness and starts hallucinating and sleepwalking. The hallucinations make him see Havisham, Magwitch, Orlick, and Joe's face. This makes Pip guilty since Joe always loved him, and he tried to make it better but ruining it. Once Pip recovers and gets a letter from Joe, he finds out Biddy taught Joe how to write, Miss Havisham died, and Orlick got arrested. Joe and Pip go out with each other on a Sunday, and they eventually talk it out. Both characters apologize to one another for various reasons, which makes Pip feel happy, and they both fall asleep. Pip then wakes up and sees that Joe gave him a goodbye note and all the payed debts. Pip rushes back to home by following Joe, and propose to Biddy.

Analysis: This chapter makes the mood very somber, as Pip is alone to the point that he's hallucinating. The hallucinations make Pip very guilty of his behavior with Joe. They later spend time with each other, though it is an awkward situation. It does make Pip feel a bit happy for apologizing to Joe.

Motif: Pip and Joe spending their time with each other.

Connection:
