But this is against the principle of work-life balance in some western countries. Besides, there is also a netiquette cultural difference in the choice of words used in emails, and some American professors prefer to use Hi directly as the email greeting style. But this may be considered rude in commonwealth countries.

Meeting

Meeting rule

Open camera（In some countries, it might be not convenient for females to reveal the face due to the consideration of religion belief and social norm. More conservative areas can feel offended by such comments. For some regions, personal information such as height, weight, and age are off-limits topics of discussion.IP location (sterotype): Some countries require platforms to display the IP address of the speaker in order to regulate online behavior. This is not possible in other countries because the local culture resents the disclosure of personal information.

Generally speaking, there are no universial rules/guidelines for Netiquette. Netiquette should be context-based generally.
However, we still have some general tips for improving the online world's Netiquette, like improving the sense of empathy and mutual understanding. The 5 tips for improving the Netiquette in online communities are:
1. Self-disclosure
❌Don't assume that your groupmate can understand you clearly, esp. during the online collaboration/ communication environment.
✔️ Share more about yourself, e.g. your academic/ professional background, personalities, strengths and weaknesses.

2. Set Group Rules
❌Don't change the ground rules suddenly without being agreed by all groupmates.
✔️Set a commonly agreed synchronous and asynchronous online communication schedule and division of labours/ roles before the online collaboration.
3. Reach a consensus for
e-collaboration & communication
❌Don't assume that everyone has the same understanding and expectations for the online collaboration and communication tools, and the collaborative projects/ tasks
✔️Discuss the nature and intended usage of each online communication and collaboration tool, and reach a consensus about how we use and respond to each other via each selected tool.

✔️Set the commonly agreed goals for the project.
4. Communicate explicitly
✔️Clearly and explicitly express your ideas.

✔️Set clear objectives for each collaborative task and after each time of communication via any synchronous and asynchronous tool.

Why?

⚠️Some implicit social cues, e.g. voice pitch and tone, body language and expressions, and non-verbal or contextual messages would be lost/ distorted during online communication and collaboration.

⚠️Difficult to understand each other's hidden perceptions.

⚠️Hard to go through the socialization process and set desired norms and collaborative procedures.
5. Be aware of Netiquette
✔️Be polite.

❌Avoid being rude, using sarcasm, or writing in all capital letters.

✔️Be respectful and open-minded:

Respect each other's opinions, diversity and privacy.

Actively listen to others' views.

Based on the facts and research findings raise your concern if you would like to express your disagreements.

Credit/ Echo others' ideas.

❌Don't immediately ban others' ideas according to your prior impression of that groupmate/ personal experience.

Group 3:
Yu Kefan
Zhang zhen
Tan Honghao
Chung Wing Hei

Group 3: Does netiquette mean we all need to follow certain rules all the time andperform uniformly in online environments?

While it may be easy to think that netiquette means that we must all follow certain rules and perform uniformly in online environments, this is not necessarily the case. Netiquette is more about being considerate of others, rather than blindly following a set of guidelines.

It doesn’t mean that we all need to follow certain rules all the time and perform uniformly in online environments .as the internet is a vast, diverse space, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to online behavior.

We think that there are some general guidelines that can help us all be good netizens. These guidelines may vary depending on the platform, but some common practices include being respectful, honest, and kind.

It's also important to remember that online communication lacks many of the cues we rely on in face-to-face communication, such as tone of voice and body language. This means that it's easy for misunderstandings to occur, so it's important to take the time to communicate clearly and with empathy. This can mean taking a moment to think before responding to a post or email, or using emojis to convey tone.

Also, we may encounter people with different backgrounds and perspectives than our own so being open-minded and respectful of others' viewpoints can go a long way in creating a positive online environment.

While netiquette may not require us to follow a strict set of rules, it does require us to be mindful of our actions and the impact they may have on others. By following these guidelines, we can create a more inclusive and respectful online community.

Keizer & Lucas

There are several ways to improve the situation of cultural conflict in the online world.

First, we should be aware of asking questions that involve personal privacy due to different cultures having their own privacy acceptance level. Try to avoid the questions like ages or salary. It might be common in some countries, but others do not.

Secondly, try to avoid using some slang for specific content that only people from that country knowing it, which decreases the efficiency of communication and is also not a good way of performing good netiquette.

CHEUNG Hoi Lun Helen
