Summary - Rewiring the Brain: Innovations in PTSD Care

PTSD affects about 16 million Americans each year—approximately 6% of the population (va.gov, 2018). While many benefit from therapy or medication, roughly one-third of patients are classified as treatment-resistant (TR-PTSD), meaning they don’t respond to standard care (Green, 2018). Symptoms often emerge outside clinical settings, where timely support is limited.

A new dual-therapy system combines responsive neural stimulation (RNS) implants with AI-enhanced wearable technology to provide real-time, individualized support for TR-PTSD patients (Wang et al., 2025).

RNS devices—originally used for epilepsy—are now being implanted into the amygdala to detect abnormal brain wave activity related to trauma (Wang et al., 2025). When triggered, the device delivers electrical stimulation to reduce hyperactivity, easing symptoms like flashbacks and hypervigilance. A year-long study with two TR-PTSD patients showed clinically meaningful reductions in symptoms (Gill et al., 2023).

Wearables using large language models (LLMs) track physiological signals (heart rate, movement, skin response) and social cues to predict PTSD episodes. In one study, hyperarousal events were predicted with 83% accuracy, demonstrating the potential for early intervention even outside clinical environments (Sadghi et al., 2022).

By merging internal brain monitoring with external, real-time feedback, this system extends PTSD care beyond the therapy room. It holds strong potential to revolutionize treatment for those with the most severe and unresponsive cases (Wang et al., 2025; Sadghi et al., 2022).

I believe that this dual-therapy innovation is an important and pivotal step in advancing care for individuals with treatment-resistant PTSD. It represents a shift toward truly personalized, real-time mental health support that goes beyond the limits of traditional therapy.

This technology empowers a population that often feels powerless - people whose lives are deeply disrupted by symptoms like hypervigilance, flashbacks, and emotional dysregulation. Many of them struggle to feel safe even in everyday environments. By using both brain-based and wearable AI systems, this approach not only acknowledges the complexity of PTSD, but also offers a hopeful and human-centered path forward.

To me, this innovation is more than just a treatment—it's a statement that we can do better for those who have long been underserved. While there are still challenges around access, research, and ethics, I see this as a promising step toward giving people back control, dignity, and the ability to experience life with more safety and support.

Being part of a solid team doesn't necessarily mean finding the "right people" — it's about understanding what people bring to the table, starting with my own personal strengths. After taking the Gallup StrengthsFinder assessment, I'd like to think that my personality is a combination of a few quality team members, including:

Randall (Responsibility) makes sure things get done. He's steady, reliable, and holds high standards. He takes ownership of things and what he says, he does.

Cindy (Connectedness) sees meaning in the chaos and makes sure the team doesn't lose sight of the bigger picture (or of each other).

Carter (Communication) helps get ideas out of people's heads and into the room by engaging and expressing. He helps translate vision into action.

Daisy (Developer) is the encourager and sees potential before it's fully formed. She wants to ensure everyone on the team feels seen, supported, and capable of evolving.

Abraham (Arranger) is the orchestrator. He sees the puzzle pieces and knows how to move things around so everything fits and flows. During messy, complicated times, he can find clarity, adjust, and keep things moving forward.
