The tradition of New Year in the united states could be different and unique for each individual person but one of the most common traditions celebrated is the New York ball drop. This is a televised event that most people watch, they count down until new years; in which, the ball drops exactly at 1:00 am on January 1st of the new year.
This tradition was first started in 1904 but got its flag top design in 1907. The first design of the ball was made by Jacob Starr, and was 5 feet wide and 700 pounds. In 1920 the ball was replaced with a 400 pound ball made out of wrought iron. Then replaced once again in 1988 by an aluminum ball. Finally it was replaced again in 2000, made of crystal and the latest light technology.

My own families tradition is quite a simple one; every year we just hangout and talk until twelve. Then we go outside and watch any fireworks that people are setting off, as well as open a bottle of sparkling apple cider and drink it. I am not completely sure on how this tradition was started but I remember doing this since I was little. From what I know my grandma has been doing this since she was a little girl so she carried on the tradition to her son, my dad and the to me and my brothers.

They have two dates for new years; the first on January 1st for the modern Gregorian calendar, which is the main new years. Then there is the "old" new years on January 14 from the orthodox calendar, which is still widely celebrated by most.
To celebrate most people go to concerts or to firework shows. Other families who don't want to go out they have, these feast that are very large and later at night.

In Mexico they follow the Gregorian calendar meaning their New Years is on January 1st. In Mexico as most people know it is a culture filled country, saying that you could only assume that they have many unique traditions, which they do. One of the many traditions most do is to throw lentils. People throw lentils throughout their house and or give them to family and friends. This is to spread and to get good fortune for the new year. Another tradition is to ring the door bell right at 12 a.m. right on new years. Most people do this because the sound of the bell is supposed to scare off bad vibes and bad energy. Another tradition is for everyone to wear very colourful clothes and very anything dull; this is to bring in the new years with love, happiness, prosperity, and good lucky.

Most people follow those but some follow their family traditions on what to eat; for example my family makes and eats tamales every year, That is also what most make and eat in Mexico. Some of the foods that are supposed to bring you good luck or just some popular food for new years are: Black eye peas, cornbread, greens, pork, grapes, fish, noodles, rice, and cake.

In the year 2018 I've learned a lot, probably the most in a year that I ever have in a year. I learned stuff not only in school and not only school related stuff, and by that I mean that I've learned a lot of things about myself. I learned that I can become closer to people that I've known for months than years. I learned that I need to watch what I do because small things could have huge consequences, for example if I had decided not to do this project it would come back and bite me later on down the road. I also learned that those small mistakes that I made that had big consequences are great to shape me and make me a better person and I am so glad for them. I'm so grateful for all the things that I've learned in the past year.

2018 was by far the most eventful year; it was the best, worst, most exciting, and just my favourite year so far. In 2018 I've made a lot of friends and lost even more, of course those made me sad but Im so happy that I lost them because they showed that they weren't meant to be my friends and that they don't need me and i don't need then either. I met a bunch of new people in 2018 which lots of them I'm close to and two of them are now my best friends and I love them so much because they show me who i really am. Then there was bad in 2018 as well, a lot of family fight, falling outs with friends, a pinch of death in the mix but still overall my great was great and im so excited to see what 2019 is going to throw my way.
