GLOBE Observer is an international citizen science initiative to understand our global environment. Your observations help scientists track changes in clouds in support of climate research. Scientists also use your data to verify NASA satellite data. And by submitting your observations, you can help students of all ages do real scientific research as part of the GLOBE Program. To participate, just download the app, go outside and follow the prompts in the app to observe your environment. Photograph clouds, record sky observations and compare them with NASA satellite images to help scientists understand the sky from above and below.

Help scientists analyze movies from the brain affected with Alzheimer’s - are the blood vessels flowing or stalled?

Today, there is no treatment for Alzheimer's. Together with researchers at Cornell University, we have a goal to change that. We’re focusing on one aspect of the disease: reduced blood flow in the brain. It’s a symptom that has been known for years, but until now, nobody knew why it happens.

Our collaborators recently discovered that stalls (clogged blood vessels in the brain) are responsible for this blood flow reduction in mice with Alzheimer’s. By reducing the number of stalls, the lab was able to restore memory and reduce other cognitive symptoms in mice.

But to fully understand how stalls are contributing to Alzheimer’s and discover potential treatment targets, we need to get through lots of data. We need your keen eyes for that - even the most powerful computer technologies can’t do that accurately enough yet. Without the help of the crowd, this process could take decades.

In Stall Catchers we “catch” stalls by looking at movies from the brain of mice and scoring blood vessels as “flowing” or “stalled”. The game is easy enough to learn, and we help you out in the beginning! And even if you get a couple of questions wrong - don’t worry. Each vessel will be seen by other citizen scientists so we can figure out the right answers together.

With your help, we could potentially find an effective treatment for Alzheimer's disease in just a few years - quick enough to make a difference in the lives of people who have the disease now.

Despite comprehensive civil rights legislation for Americans with disabilities, many city streets, sidewalks, and businesses remain inaccessible. Project Sidewalk, and our network of volunteers, plan to change that. Project Sidewalk is a web-based tool that allows anyone with a web browser and internet connection to contribute sidewalk accessibility information virtually using Google Street View. The data we collect is open and publicly available through our APIs. The data can be used by city governments to prioritize certain places for sidewalk upgrades/repairs. It can and has been used by members of the community to lobby for more funding for sidewalk repairs by the city. Or the data could be used in a number of other ways, including through new pedestrian routing applications!

The long term goal of Project Sidewalk is to use this very large dataset to train computer vision and machine learning algorithms to detect accessibility problems automatically. Collecting accessibility data is expensive for cities and time consuming for volunteers. If this data can be collected automatically, it will free up money in city budgets to actually do the sidewalk repairs.

DOs and DONTs slides: https://tinyurl.com/ProjectSidewalkDosAndDonts Training slides: https://tinyurl.com/ProjectSidewalkTraining

The Great Sunflower Project

The Great Sunflower Project has three programs. The Safe Gardens for Pollinators program which uses data collected on Lemon Queen sunflowers to examine the effects of pesticides on pollinators. The Pollinator Friendly Plants program which is designed to identify the key plants to support healthy pollinator communities. And, the Great Pollinator Habitat Challenge which allows citizen scientists to evaluate and improve gardens, parks and other green spaces for pollinators.

Some bee populations have experienced severe declines that may affect food production. However, nobody has ever measured how much pollination is happening over a region, much less a continent, so there is little information about how a decline in the bee population can influence gardens.

The Great Sunflower Project makes it easy to gather this information. Find a plant you know (or a Lemon Queen Sunflower), observe it for 5 or more minutes and record all pollinators that visit, and contribute data online. You can make as many observations as you want while your flowers are in bloom. Plant, Watch, Enter. Repeat. That's it. And, who doesn't like sunflowers?!

Thousands of volunteers across North America contribute observational data that help track wildlife migration and seasonal change. Journey North volunteers track the migration of monarch butterflies; six species of hummingbirds; American robins; common loons; red-winged blackbirds; Baltimore, Bullocks and orchard orioles; barn swallows; and bald eagles.

You can also join in a Journey North's educational project called the Tulip Test Garden. Plant tulip bulbs in the fall and then predict emergence and bloom dates in the spring.

Explore the Journey North website for inquiry-based learning resources designed to engage students in the study of wildlife migration. Subscribe to receive news updates. Finally, watch migration unfold in real-time on interactive maps.

Report your observations today and all year round.

Seven out of 10 people in the US have never seen our Milky Way Galaxy arch across their night sky from where they live. Have you? If so, you're lucky! If not, it's probably because of light pollution (too much outdoor lighting).

Light pollution not only affects our view of the stars, but it also wastes energy and money (about $2 to $10 billion a year!), causes sleep disorders in people, and disrupts the sleeping, breeding and migration habits of animals.

You can join other citizen scientists by measuring your night sky brightness and submitting your observations. Just go outside at least an hour after sunset (8-10pm local time) when the moon is not up. Let your eyes adjust to the dark for about 10 minutes, then start your first observation.

Compare how many stars you can see in a constellation with how many stars you should be able to see. Light pollution may be a global problem, but the solutions are local and it starts with you.

Your data, paired with time and location, wil help create a light pollution map worldwide. It's easy to get involved - all you need is computer or smartphone!
