The gumboot dance started back in the 1800's when miners used this dance to communicate with each other and now it is one of the most popular dance genres in South African culture. Overtime this dance has grown and people have actually got good at the dance. Which is now used to show gratification in the fight against the oppressive government, even after apartheid ended in 1994.

Gumboot dancing originally was a communication between miners who were not allowed to talk to each other. More than a century ago workers came to the mines to work, when they came they used the dance as a way of talking to other miners because the mine boss kept them quiet. People who went through struggle also took part in the dance to show their gratification in the fight against the oppressive government, even after apartheid ended in 1994. This dance is a symbol of hope and solidarity.
