Ralph is a natural born leader. He is charismatic and knows how to catch the attention of the crowd. He takes charge of the group and contemplates how they could get home while telling the rest of the island to prepare huts and a food source. He is concerned of the well being of everyone on the island. Jack on the other hand had a different approach. He arrived with his choir of boys, and automatically thought he would be given power. Jack is one of the older boys of the group, and is very strong-willed. If he does not get his way, he will result to degrading and violence. Last, but not least, there is Piggy. He is just a pure representation that these were ordinary children. He was overweight, so his skill set compared to the other boys was very minimal. After Piggy finds it, the boys use the conch to call meetings, or to award the right to speak to the person holding it. This is a way for there to always be control over everyone on the island. Ralph's approach was to make the boys think less about having no grownups to look after them, and more on having no grown ups to control them. He took actions right away to show the boys they could survive without them. Jack on the other hand made the group sort of fear him. When Piggy disagreed with him, Jack stated, "Shut up, Fatty." The other boys are not scared because they believe they have a grasp around what is happening. Jack is unable to catch a pig, so his hunting group is failing. He sees that everyone needs to help each other in order for them to reach a greater good. That is why he also volunteers himself to help with the huts that will not stand up.
