When she came to use boats to get across the river to the woods and Caddie took them a more unwieldy boat, while her uncle took the slick canoe. She boasted her skills on the raft by getting to the other side of the river first. She bragged an trash talked Uncle Edmund, but he got his revenge on Caddie by lying to her saying that he forgot his game bag and took an awfully long time getting it. With her keen eyesight she immediately spotted a squirrel and prooved to be worthy to Uncle Edmund "'There!' she whispered, pointing to the branch of the tree some yards ahead. A squirrel sat there motionless, trying to look like a part of the tree." (pg. 37) When it was time to return Caddie took the raft, however, Uncle Edmund took out the pins that held the raft together, and the raft sank.

Mr. Woodlawn does not want his daughter to go through the same thing he went through. John Woodlawn came from a rich family. When he was old enough to be independent, he could have just taken his family's fortune, but he insisted to make his own money. He wanted to work for it. "'It was a hard struggle, but what I have in 'life I have earned with my own hand s. I have done well, and I have an honest man's honest pride. I want no lands and honors which I have not won by my own good sense and industry." (pg. 86) Mr. Woodlawn would never accept getting a lot of money and fancy shelter if he never tried hard to EARN it.
