Our main source of protein is fish. We also eat wild fruits and Brazilian nuts. We harvest vegetables and hunt animals such as monkeys and turtles. We use blowguns and darts dipped in curare. This is a poison that instantly paralyzes the animal. I like fishing with a bow and arrow at the river's edge because I can keep my eye on other game at the same time.

Recently we have began to buy rice, beans, cookies, sugar, and milk from village stores. My family and I, preferably, try to stick to the more traditional foods.

To make matters worse, many figures within the Brazilian establishment would like to see our area reduced in size and opened up to mining, ranching and colonisation. The Brazilian army has built barracks in the Yanomami heartlands, which has increased tensions. Soldiers have prostituted our women, some of whom have been infected with sexually transmitted diseases.

The crops that are grown in our gardens account for approximately 80% of our food source. I, along with the other men, go out to hunt for peccary, monkey and tapir amongst others. I have been hunting for as long as I can remember. We commonly use curare to hunt and fish. It is a poisonous plant that the Gods have made us resistant to. After a successful day of hunting, I give my meat to my family and friends who in return will thank me with their own catch.

During the cremation, we cry and sing sad songs, with our faces painted black. The burnt remains are then crumbled and put into a big pot, where they are kept until the second part of the funeral ceremony. The second part consists of cooking bananas, mashing them and mixing them with the ash and bone of the dead. We all gather up to eat the mush – this way, the soul of our beloved member is absorbed by the us again and freed for salvation.

The log race is not really a race at all, it's a ceremony, an aesthetic event. We are not driven by notions of winning and losing. The logs are carried by two teams, representing the oppositions that we believe go to make up the universe. The running of the logs expresses the dynamic tension between opposing principles. The purpose of the ceremonies is to stress that these antithesis need not tear the world apart. Opposing can be controlled to complement each other and create equilibrium and harmony.
