We wanted to create sheet with game directions. The sheet the directions are contained on would have an autoreader available - this comes as a default in Google Docs (just need to turn it on) or Adobe PDF. In addition to the directions being read aloud, we wanted to have a hyperlink to difficult to understand words or concepts, this hyperlink would open up a prerecorded video with a brief demo and explanation of the concept being taught. This type of direction would allow the majority of users to understand how to play the game regardless of learning ability or language understanding.

For some apps and websites this is enough to read the text to the students so they do not have to read. They have the ability to have it repeated so they can listen to it more than once if needed. For other apps and websites, including the scratch games, the directions are not able to be read just from the accessibility settings. For those, we can make a Google Doc or Slide with the directions and a link to a tutorial on how to play the game. This will allow students to hear the directions and see how the game is played before trying it themselves. All students would have access to the directions and tutorial before playing.

We worked together to develop a plan that would allow all students to not only have the understanding to perform a sequence using Scratch, but also to have the ability to get the sequence completed without becoming overwhelmed. We would begin by eliminating the use of the keyboard. Using the Scratch Book and Card Set, we would map out a sequence with the cards for the students to use. We would then have the student use the cards to map out a sequence as well. Using the controller instead of the keyboard, the students would then begin to put together their sequence using the Scratch Program. If needed, we could also break this up into smaller sections by color coding it for the student. By doing this, the student would successfully complete the assignment without getting upset or overwhelmed.

I selected student C. My thought is to make a video game tutorial where the student can listen to the instructions while the student is testing out and getting the hang of playing. The tutorial could be a short program that starts with more hands on oral instruction and is slowly taken away as the student becomes more comfortable.

Nicole
nhepfinger@rhemachristianschool.org

Including larger targets for the control and allowing for more than just finger movement to control the game could help individuals with limited dexterity.
Dan
dwolesla@wasd.org

I thought about how to create a controller using Makey Makey that would allow this student to play the game without hand coordination. For example, I thought about utilizing foot pedals made from play dough or even creating buttons the user could push with their head for different functions. This was a great way to think about how it might be possible for me and/or my students to actually create assistive technologies, rather than simply leaving it to the experts.

Hannah K

Motion sensor Assistive Tech idea

^^inspired by the attached viral video

The student wants a gaming experience that does not overstimulate their brain and interrupt their ability to complete the task of the game. Thus, my goal is to make an existing Scratch game less overwhelming for the senses. Some ways to do that could include changing the colors of the computer screen, simplifying the audio to only what is necessary, directing noises and colors to where student should focus their attention, etc.

I decided to change the screen color settings on the computer to a black and white setting. Using motion sensors, I would also program the student’s computer (using a makey makey device and other hardware) to send audible warnings “On your left” or “on your right” when a soccer ball comes towards the student’s goal in a Scratch soccer game.
To test it out, I would play the game with the motion sensor warnings to focus the student’s brain on the incoming soccer ball instead of the other distractions on the screen (the other players’ avatar, etc). I would then adjust the motion sensors as needed and try it with other games, such as a car racing game.

I chose student C. Most of student C's frustration seems to stem from a lack of reading skill. I have encountered this in my classroom and the student's parents actually informed me that the student was having trouble reading his/hers video game prompts at home. I wish that I would have explored more into the subject but at the time my main goal was getting them to be able to read their material at school, to encounter success and feel more confident in themselves. I researched and found apps that will read items to you on the web, ebooks, and even what is written on paper. An example of this technology is called Voice Aloud Reader. Here is the link if you would like to check it out. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/voice-aloud-reader/id1446876360
I should have probably led with the fact that my school does not have makey makey or any of that technology yet that I could make a proto-type with. However I did check out "Head Connect" and I think that this app would have been needed for student C to find success playing this game. Thanks for reading! - Holly Collins HIS Kids Christian School
