         <title>Sam Houston Elected as President - October 1836</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>There were many people who wanted to be president, but the people of Texas had chose Sam Houston as the First President of Texas.The newly troubled republic had problems with money and was in debt.They also had to deal with Mexico and attacks from the Indians.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>The Indians didn't enjoy that the people of Texas were living on their land, and they didn't like the wars Texas had brought.Several Tejanos didn't like the rules of the republic, and a Tejano from. named Vicente Córdova created a group to start a rebellion against the Republic.However the rebellion died out after being defeated in a battle near Seguin in 1839.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Since Houston couldn't be re-elected, his term expired in 1838.So the two known people running were,Mirabeau Lamar, who was vice president, and Robert Wilson.Lamar focused mainly on rewriting Houston's rules, and trying to make Texas known to other nations.Lamar had won easily, so to achieve his goal he enlarged the Texas Rangers ,and brought back the Navy .Later on Texas was finally recognized as a nation by several countries.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Lamar didn't like the Indians around, and didn't like that they were on Texas land.Lamar wanted to make the Congress deny the treaty Houston had put in motion, when it was his term .In May 1839, Texas Rangers raided many Mexicans and Indians from their villages, and the Native American groups decided that they would leave after they harvest.This didn't stop Lamar, and on July 16,1839 they attacked the Cherokee tribe near the Neches River.</div>]]></description>

         <title>The Texas Navy- January 1840</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Lamar wanted the nations around them to notice that Texas was an independent nation ,and to do this Lamar thought having a strong military would make them recognize Texas as a powerful nation. In 1840 Lamar told the  Navy to help Mexicans Rebels in Mexico's Yucatán Province.Lamar thought that the Yucatán rebellion would keep Mexico busy, and that it would show Mexico how strong Texas is.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Council House Fight- March 1840 </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Comanche raids were still happening in the West, so in 1839, Texas Rangers had went to the  Comanche County, and fought several battles against them.Comanche wanted to end the fighting and wanted a piece treaty, but Texas had wanted them to bring the hostages that they captured.This took place in the Texas Council House, but during the treaty ,there was a misconception and many people were killed.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Lamar had wanted to annex Santa Fe to the Republic, because of the grudges Mexico and Texas still had.Lamar had wanted Santa Fe because he wanted to expand the nation, so he disobeyed the Congress. More than 300 soldiers had to surrender to Mexico,and had died.</div>]]></description>

Sam Houston had wanted the government's archives to be moved from Austin, in case the capital was attacked.But since a little misconception happened ,with the residents of Austin , and the Texas Rangers, the Archives stayed in Austin.In September 1842, Mexican Troops captured San Antonio again, but were again unsuccessful at holding it captured, and were defeated by the Texas Rangers</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Houston brought back the  peaceful and fair dealings with Native Americans, and brought them supplies.Peace treaties were signed with several Native groups, and in October 1844,Houston met with the leaders of the tribes and told them that Lamar's ways had ended. 11 Native American groups signed the peace and trade treaties that resulted from these talks.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>During the time of the republic ,the population was a problem, mostly because of the immigrants that would come to Texas. When Houston was reelected he was still committed to annexation, and he had thought of an idea.In April 1844, people from the US and Texas negotiated and signed a treaty of annexation ,and it said that Texas would join the United States as a territory.The government of  the US, would pay Texas's debt, but in return Texas had to give up all claims to its  lands.Many Texans were upset that this annexation happend.</div>]]></description>
