Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow

Published: 2016

Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At seventeen she’s already lost more than most people do in a lifetime. But she’s learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don’t have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you.
Every new scar hardens Charlie’s heart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge.
A deeply moving portrait of a girl in a world that owes her nothing, and has taken so much, and the journey she undergoes to put herself back together. Kathleen Glasgow's debut is heartbreakingly real and unflinchingly honest. It’s a story you won’t be able to look away from.

I also feel like I connect better with sad books and I think this might be one of the saddest books I've ever read.

"Clean" by Taylor Swift
I chose this song because at this point in the book Charlie is beginning to let go of her past and that is what this song focuses on. The artist of the song wrote this to express how she is clean from the past and starting again, just like Charlie is doing in Tusan.

I have a job, I have my own place and Mikey is finally with me, but he has a f****** girlfriend. An angelic, unscarred girlfriend. I was so stupid to think that a normal person would like someone as messed up as me. So much of me wants to open my tender kit, but Casper's words tug at the back of my mind. And what about Riley, I can't help but remember the warm feeling I get and the way I feel like he understands me. I need to take things slowly. Please don't mess things up this time Charlie.

I chose the M*A*S*H t-shirt Riley gave to Charlie as my symbol for this section of the book because I think it is a turning point for Charlie. Riley finally convinces her it is ok to show her scars in public, something she has been too terrified to do for months. Later on though, this comes to hurt her when her manager says she can not show her arms, in the case that she might be triggering customers. Charlie questions herself and thinks about returning to old habits, but fortunately does not.

'I'm not afraid of work at all'" (Glasgow 297).

This is the moment Charlie realizes that although she's been spending so much time with Riley, she knows it's not good for her, and covering up her feelings won't last forever. So she turns to art once again, except maybe this time it will go somewhere.
