Fevers can run commonly and to identify a fever, a thermometer is required. Not many people have quick access to a thermometer, so an application named “FeverPhone” was designed so that it could be downloaded with a touch of a button from a smartphone and be able to measure core body temperature (Hastings, 2023). For body temperature to be calculated, the application needs to be launched and the smartphone must be placed on the individual’s forehead for about 90 seconds. A machine learning algorithm is utilized to then measure these temperature sensors to calculate how much heat is being produced (Hastings, 2023).

This application allows for many smartphones users to have the ability to have access to a thermometer when needed. When individuals are feeling sick, sometimes the last thing on their mind is to drive into town to purchase a thermometer. Most individuals assume they have a subjectively high fever and instead, go to the nearest emergency room or urgent care to receive care for a low-grade fever.
With the use of a smartphone thermometer, it gives patients the ability to accurately treat themselves at home with over-the-counter medications and gives them the empowerment to independently take care of their health.
The application can be re-downloaded onto any device that is paired to the App Store in which it was downloaded from.

Like regular thermometers, sometimes they will not accurately describe a core body temperature due to need of calibration, batteries, or device/human error.
Another possible con for this intervention is if the smartphone overheats due to excessive use and when attempting to measure body temperature, it can give a false high reading.
Other cons come from having to keep up with application updates and privacy and confidentiality policies.

Opinion and Rationale

I think this innovative application is a great idea. Although I am an emergency room nurse, I do not own a thermometer and sometimes assume I have a subjective fever when I get sick. Having access to this application would make it easy for me, and my family, to take their temperature from the touch of a button. When reading further into the description of the application, there is an average error of 0.41 degrees Fahrenheit (Hastings, 2023). I think this margin of error is exceptional for a smartphone thermometer. As far as battery life, the individual would just have to charge their phone as they usually do. I would definitely get this application.
